“great location; excellent staff”

Hotel staff were wonderful. Only caution; cathedral bells ring all night long. Ask for room with A/C and leave fan on to block noise.
Early morning coffee and tea a plus.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, use room fan or ear plugs to block out catedral bells which ring every 1...

It's true this hotel has an amazing location and all the local must-sees are within walking distance. But I feel that management was over exaggerating their amenities. We almost didn't book this hotel since there was no pool or oceanfront location to relax and enjoy the sun. But their website indicated (and still does!) that we'd be treated as guests at the Amapa Sunset Beach Club - WRONG! When we did locate the Beach Club at Los Muertos Beach we were treated quite rudely and we tried to tell them we were staying at Hotel Catedral and before we could show them our key card we were told that there is no association between Amapa Beach Club and the hotel. It was quite embarrassing. If you travel from a cold climate to Puerto Vallarta to enjoy the sun & the beach this is not the hotel for you. There are just too many to chose from!

The bathroom was also a disappointment, old fixtures, old tile a leaking toilet and only cold water at the sink.

January 2012: If you are looking for a charming place to stay and are not interested in boring chains with no personality- this place is for you. From the moment we set foot on the property, the hosts were super pleasant and helpful. The courtyard and view from this place is amazing. The room we stayed in was extremely cute, clean and had everything we needed. It is in a great part of town. Very safe, lots of shopping and so close to the main downtown area. We could hear the cathedral bell during the day- but it does not ring at night, and even if it did- it is not loud at all. No taxi or rental car is necessary if you stay here. Everything is just as you need! We arranged for a taxi to pick us up from the airport through this hotel and it was there promptly, with a friendly safe driver. Cannot recommend this place enough. Great price performer with boutique style.

Hola ! Greetings from warm and sunny Puerto Vallarta !! Thank you for sharing with our future visitors your opinion and experience during your visit. I am extremely proud of our staff, they are the heart and soul of Hotel Catedral Vallarta, and I am glad I am constantly reminded by our guests & friends about how helpful and service oriented they are, Gracias ! We are constantly thinking what to improve, change, remodel, or do different; this way everytime a Guest comes back, it will find something new and different at our property. FYI, We are in the process of opening a roof top Solarium, this way we will have another place to relax and disconnect while getting some sun-rays.
We appreciatte your recommendation. Being a small exclusive property, we do not have a loyalty program in place, but, send us an email, if you are coming back, or if some friends or family of your is coming, ok ? We will make them feel like at home.
Looking forward to your next visit. Hasta la vista !

The Hotel has individually designed and very well maintained rooms. Furniture and style are far from faceless chain-hotels. It is clean and comfortable. As each room is different There may be less attractive rooms than ours, however, we were more than satisfied. But the best about Hotel Catedral is the extremely friendly and helpful staff (all of them from manager to room maid).

Room Tip: it seems that rooms facing the street are bigger?

I booked Hotel Catedral for 4 nights in PV based on the glowing reviews here, but don't know why the reviews are so good. The property was quaint and clean, but our first room was super-tiny with such a hard bed that my hips were literally bruised. Also, the hourly chiming of the nearby cathedral kept us up most of the night. The next day we asked to move to another room, and after alot of charades due to a "sudden" communication problem (front desk staff could speak English perfectly fine when we checked in), we were offered a larger room facing away from the cathedral. Only after we moved all our luggage were we informed it would cost an extra $15/night, thus making this not such an inexpensive stay any longer. The bed was still as uncomfortable and noise only marginally less. I was happy to leave this hotel.

We stayed here after reading several positive reviews PLUS it was the most affordable hotel through our travel company. My husband likes the all-inclusive resorts, but I was afraid we'd feel obligated to stay within the resort if that had been our choice, so I rallied hard for a hotel in town. Since we've been home, I've been almost bragging about how we stayed at a property with NO bar, NO restaurant, NO pool and NOT on the beach, but it was PERFECT in every way! Everything you read about "location" is so true! The beach is only 2 blocks away and the rest of the town is so fun to explore on foot!

The staff was GREAT and very accomodating! As the website states, the decor is very authentic Mexican and extremely beautiful! So much that I'm redecorating my home in a similar fashion all the way down to the tissue paper flowers that were in our room! The week we stayed, an artist painted 2 brightly colored murals on the walls in the common area. (see photos)

The rooms were clean & comfortable. Everything is relative. Some said the beds were "hard," it just depends on what you like or more-so, what you expect. Some said it was loud outside... our bed at home is softer and our home is more quiet, but the sounds of the city were part of the charm of our vacation! Our room had a balcony and I wouldn't have traded it for anything! We left the patio door open every night! In the mornings, we enjoyed coffee on the balcony and the streets were quiet!

During our vacation, we did check out & tour a couple other hotel properties, but when we return to PV someday soon & we'd stay here again in a heart beat! Check out our video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6d83-vbtQ1A&list=UUQbrMQs2BtBXGvj-Q11MdFw&index=7&feature=plcp

Room Tip: If you're feeling adventurous, get a room with a balcony! Enjoy the sights & sounds of the...

We really loved the Hotel Catedral for many reasons. Spotlessly clean, excellent daily room cleaning, helpful and friendly staff that helped with our luggage (after check in and pre check in baggage storage was available), safe and secure, free WIFI throughout the building, free in-room safe, 2 flat screen TV's with a suprisingly huge number of channels, tap water we could drink, free bottled water, hot water in the shower, air conditioning, windows that opened to a typical Mexican courtyard below, 2 1/2 blocks to the Malecon (boardwalk) and beach, location in the Zona Romantica (old-town Vallarta). The beds were quite comfortable for Mexico, but not "Hilton" beds. But, they were absolutely comfortable and much better than most Mexican hotels and private home rentals. For people with ambulatory issues/trouble walking - you could be located as high as the 5th floor and as is typical for a Mexican Hotel of this style, there is no elevator. If you have mobility issues, you should ask for ground floor or 2nd floor. The hotel staff were absolutely friendly and helpful. After check out showers are available for those of you with a late flight who wish to spend the day at the beach. Price was very reasonable. We traveled as a family of 4 with 2 teenagers and would absolutely stay here again. They took really good care of us. We have noted that some people have commented on the church bells. We love the sound. It is quite typical in all of Mexico to have some kind of noise - such as roosters, vehicles, music, bells, etc. This place was much quieter than most. If you have trouble sleeping through any type of noise, you may wish to pack your earplugs for your entire Mexican vacation!

Room Tip: If you cannot walk up stairs, this hotel could be an issue for you - no elevator. We had no issue an...
