“Awesome holiday”
Reviewed 16 March 2012

We just returned from a two week vacation to Canto Del Sol in Puerta Vallarta. We had a fabulous time. The resort met all our needs and more. The food was excellent: lots of variety, desserts were scrumptious and a la cartes were "fine dining experiences". The service in the buffet restaurant(Thanks, Ramon) was first class. The resort was very clean and the employees work so hard to keep it that way. The recreation and entertainment program was really good. Costumes were beautiful and the atheletic abilities of the performers were amazing. Shows or some other activity were held on different days of the week. There were also excursions to sample the "night life" in Puerta Vallarta on a few occaisions while we were there. The pool staff were well trained and knowledgeable(Thanks Martine). They encouraged participation without being pushy. We just had a wonderful relaxing vacation and would recommend this resort to anyone. Thank you to all the staff at the Canto Del Sol for making our holiday so special and we hope to see you next year.

We just came back from Puerto Vallarta, and our stay at the Canto Del Sol. The resort itself is a beach front property that also features a great pool. We met really friendly people, and noticed this resort is very popluar with Canadians. The beach itself is quite small, and we found it to be pretty rocky as well. The food was standard at the buffet, and while we didn't get a chance to sample all of the a la cartes, we did make it to the Italian restaurant. Would say the presentation and service were amazing, the food itself less so. Overall the service at the resort itself was excellent, the rooms were clean, and the day time animation team was awesome. Did not care for the air conditioning in our room as it didn't work very well, and we found it quite loud. Also noticed that there were only evening shows over the weekends, not a lot going on during the week.
We took a cab to and from the Airport, and learned the hard way (on the way back) that cab fare should not be much more than 80 pesos!
Also had the chance to walk to the Malecon, and were able to make it there in about 10-15 minutes, which we thought made the resort a really good location. Also close to the marina in the other direction, so we didn't find we needed to spend a ton of money on cab fare.
Overall, for 2 girlfriends to catch up and get some much needed sun, it was a good choice for us. I wouldn't recommend this resort for weddings or honeymooners as there are better options, but for a low-key, in-expensive trip to the beach, this was a very good choice!

I stayed at Canto March 8-12, 2012 with one friend. We had an amazing time and were pleased with the quality for the price. Canto is not a five-star resort, but it was fine for our purposes.

Check-in went smoothly, as we were assisted by gracious and competent staff. You do have to pick up your towel cards from time-share schedulers, which is not ideal, but if you don't want to sit through the presentation, say no. My friend and I decided to sit through the presentation (about 2 hours) in exchange for US$100 to use toward an excursion we wanted to take, so we took a 5 hour boat ride (snorkeling/whale watching/beach stop/booze cruise) for about US$15 each. At the end of the presentation, we said no and went on our way.

Our room was acceptable, nothing fancy but nothing bad. It was clean, the air-conditioning worked, and the balcony was large (though with an alley view). The TV, phone, safe, plugs etc all worked. The beds were comfortable and linens were clean. The location of the hotel is perfect, a little south of the middle of the Bay, a quick bus or cab ride to anywhere in the city.

The pool area is small but clean and has plenty of lounge chairs with sun/shade options. The pool is heated and has separate sections for small children and toddlers. There were a lot of kids in the pool while we were there, but the family area was definitely different than the bar area. The beach is small, and roped off from the vendors selling souvenirs. I've seen folks on TA complaining about the beach salesmen, but everyone I spoke to on the beach accepted a polite "No, gracias," and left me in peace. The ocean was too rough the days we were there (flying red flags for the dangerous undertow), so we weren't able to swim in the ocean.

The food was ok. Most of the time we ate at the buffet, which switches up its food every day according to a theme. The first night we had a big Mexican dinner party (closed up the buffet seating and set up dinner & a show in the pool area) and another night we had "Oriental" food--teppanyaki on the grill, egg rolls etc. With the all-inclusive package and staying 4 nights, we were allowed one night a la carte dining in either the Mexican or Italian restaurant. We chose the Mexican option and had a delicious dinner... though in an empty restaurant, so no points for ambiance. Tip: order the Spanish coffee for dessert, you won't be sorry. :)

The activities and bar staff were really amazing. Both were patient with our attempts to communicate in Spanish, while the activities staff were fun & entertaining & friendly, and the bar guys remembered our drink orders, and were quick with service.

All in all, I was happy with our stay at Canto. The one negative might be a slightly older crowd--we're 27 & 30 and we didn't meet anyone in our age bracket at the hotel. All the other guests we spoke to were friendly & nice but not really interested in hanging out or going out on the town with us. Usually at a report like this you end up connecting with someone, but that didn't happen for us. However, the activities staff did organize an outing every night at 10:30, which was a nice way to explore the town a bit.

I would recommend Canto and would be happy to answer any questions you have about my stay there. :)

P.S. I guess it's worth mentioning that I felt very safe on the resort and in Puerto in general. There's been some stories in the news recently that made us second-guess our planned trip, but in the end we decided to go. I guess everyone has to do their own research and decide what's best for them, but our trip felt very friendly and secure.

The Canto del Sol is a very good option for a economical all-inclusive. The grounds are well maintained, the pool is very nice but on the small size, rooms are clean and adequate. Lots of food, fairly standard buffets. The grill restaurant had excellent steaks. The service is always excellent. There is a small beach but the water is rough for swimming, but that's the case all along the hotel strip. Canto del Sol is located about half way between the marina and downtown, and it's easy to catch a cheap bus to downtown and to the malecon. Or a taxi will cost you just a few dollars.
Be sure to go downtown to see the newly revamped malecon and outdoor boardwalk, really nice! Such a great addition to the downtown restaurant and shopping area of Puerto Vallarta. We were there at end of Jan, beginning of Feb and the weather was excellent, in low 80s for 2 weeks. Couldn't ask for better for the price.

I have stayed at the Canto 8 times and loved it. My most recent stay was in Feb. 2012. The last 7 times I had a large comfortable sunny room looking over the tennis courts. This time I was given a room that had a bedroom window looking directly onto the hallway and everyone walking by could look right in. For this reason, I had to keep the curtins closed the entire week and the bedroom was extremely dark to say the least plus it had few lights. There was a balcony facing the street but it was in an area of no sun and offered no privacy. There was no WIFI at all the entire week and the old TV (no flat screen as advertised in their ads) barely got 3 channels clearly. The bath tub was cracked and worn and the entire room has not been updated in years. I give the cleaning staff excellent rating for their cleaning but the place is just dated, worn and needs updating badly. When I brought all of my concerns to the front desk (Marlon) and was given the run around and told to check back. I did this 4 days in a row and finally brought him up to the room. He said it was dark and would check on changing it. He then said that there were no other room options available and I would have to stay in that room. This is the first time in more than thirty years of traveling and staying all over the world that the service desk refused my request and ignored doing anything to make the situation better. I love the location and the cleaning staff. They are extremely caring and dedicated. One other thing to note is that most chairs around the pool, are always taken and the ones that are open are usually next to smokers so be prepared to smell smoke constantly.

The best thing about this hotel was how great the staff were, they are really helpful, kind and fun. Had many interesting conversations with security guards and waiters. Beds were comfortable and grounds were nice. The food was good and I am a very picky eater. Puerto Vallarta was my favourite city I have every visited because of the people again and the charm of the city. The only two reasons I would not give a 5 star rating is because you can't get hard alchohol past (you can get beer and wine through room service) and there is no hot tub. Would stay here again in a minute if I got the same price.
