Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary Private Tour from...
Reviewed September 4, 2017 via mobile

So glad we booked this trip while there are still butterflies to see. We booked a private tour thru Viatour which provided a private car and driver to take us from our hotel in Mexico City. I am very happy we did this as the young man drove us into the mountains and transversing the Mexican freeways was not something I wanted to attempt. The guide was charming and personable and he spoke English.
Once we were away from the city, we got to see the glorious countryside and mountains. This also afforded us the opportunity to see the villages and a different side of the the inner workings of Mexico.
When we got to the biosphere, our guide negotiated the horse rentals (highly recommended) and we journeyed up the mountainside by horseback stirring up volcanic dust in our wake. I would advise future travellers to take a bandanna to protect their breathing.
We were on horseback until the path narrowed too much for the horses to go. We then proceeded by foot further. Please note that it is advisable to be in decent shape for this trip.
When we got to a clearing the butterflies they were huddled together for warmth. As the sun came out they started to take flight! It was beautiful. We were there observing for about an hour.
When we came back down the mountain our guide had an ice chest with beer or water. My husband and I shared a toast.

Bring cash for the local gifts which support the village. Also, the this village seems to have intermittent running water and this includes the bathroom for the tourist. It is advisable to have a small bottle of hand sanitizer as conditions are a bit rugged. Oh, and a lesson I learned while traveling in Mexico, carrying a small baggie of personal toliet paper is smart. The people of Mexico were more than gracious host.

Enjoy your trip!

We learned that the monarchs travel to 3 or 4 different places while wintering in Michoacan. The last place that they gather before heading to Texas is on Cerro Pelon in March. They start their journey north to Texas in mid-March. Cerro Pelon area is accessible from the village of Macheros in the State of Mexico, about 30 minutes by taxi from Zitacuaro. JM Butterfly B & B lead our tour. It was $75/person and lasted about 4 hrs. The owners, Elena and Joel are very knowledgeable and well-educated. Elena is an American who has a Phd in Cultural Anthropology. I think that Elena and Joel could have done a better job/gone into more detail about learning more about the Monarchs, the area, including the culture of the area. Otherwise, their service was excellent . They were sensitive to the groups needs. They prepared a wonderful lunch for all to eat on the trail. There are other guides who provide the same service for less cost, but I do not know the names of the companies. If you go to see the monarchs, choose locations less touristy than El Rosario. Check out jmbutterflybnb.com/ for descriptions of the different locations to view the butterflies in the Biosphere Reserve.

Just a wonderful experience to see these butterflies. It was spring on the mountain and in a few days they will be leaving to fly to Texas and have the first egg laying.

I traveled with Travelphile Tours and guides. Rode horse up and back. Trail is not improved much but the butterflies were amazing. This is truly butterfly heaven. There is a walking trail also up the mountain and down. Lots of springs and it was spring on the mountain with many blooming wild flowers.

This was truly an outstanding trip. EcoColors Tours did an amazing job. Our driver Alberto did a great job. I cannot say enough good about our guide Clemente! He added things onto the trip. We visited extra museums and toured Mexico City and Valle de Bravo. The first day I was not prepared for the altitude 10,800 feet and had to stop part way on the hike with butterflies there. Before the hike the horse ride was about 30 to 45 minutes. The second day at Capulin Sanctuary, the trip was much more difficult. Much more aggressive climbing up and down the mountain with the horses. The trips up and down, were each two hours. We had some seasoned horse people who agreed that it was not an easy trip. But it was only a short hike up to the butterfly sanctuary once we arrived. Spectacular! Thousands/millions of butterflies. On our free day I asked Clemente if we could go parasailing. Monte Alto, near Valle de Bravo, is the best parasailing in Mexico and one of the top places in the world. He had not organized it before, but he did it for four of us. It was really incredible. Fairly inexpensive - US 80- pp including a selfie stick where they give you a micro SD card with both audio/video and photos. Out flight home was at 8:00 AM which meant Clemente had to pick us up at 4:45 AM and help us through the airport. Highly recommend EcoColors and Clemente!
