“Great Interval International Getaway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 February 2012

We got this week (Dec 24-31 2011) via an Internaval Internationl getaway in October for only $500. What a steal and we throughly enjoyed ourselves. The Islander, Caribbean and Mayan are connected, so we tried a different pool every day. None of the resorts were crowded, very surprising considering the holiday week. No problem getting pool chairs in the shade. The property is well maintained and workers are constantly present cleaning, etc. The restaurants leave a lot to be desired - mediocre food. You are much better off going into the Zona Hotel for restaurants. Thomas More was great - we booked our transfer and the Chichen Itza Express tour through them and they were efficient and money well spent.

Each of the pools and beach have happy hour every day, and it's a very good deal. However, the waiter/waitress service is hit or miss. We had several wonderful waiters, and one extremely horrible waitress. Too bad, as if she'd been even slightly competent, she could have garnered additional a bigger tab from those around the pool.

We were invited to a timeshare presentation, which lasted about 30 minutes. Although our sales representative was fine, the sales manager who came over was pretty much of a jerk. Unfortunately, that has been our expeience with Mexican time share managers at other timeshare resorts, so should not come as a surprise. The timeshare pricing is actually quite attractive and would have warrented some serious thought on our part, but the sales manager's attitude pretty much put sealed the deal against purchasing. All of the people we spoke with around the pool who were owners appeared to be very happy with their purchasing choice, so it must be a pretty good resort to come to every year.

We stayed here for 2 of our weeks while in Cancun and had a wonderful time. Staff is like family and treat you just amazing. Rooms are very clean, and many services are offered right at the front desk, travel plans, trips, etc.

Cancun is very safe to travel and even if you never leave the resort area you can visit many restaurants/attractions/shopping etc.

We are owners at the Royal Sands and Royal Mayan as well and love all the Royal Resorts!

Room Tip: Beach front rooms are great and a second floor makes for convenience and still can leave your doors...

We are not members of the Royal Resorts, but we have rented there more than 10 times. Upon arrival a few years ago there was a banner that said "Welcome Home" and that is exactly how we feel there, at home! From the maid, to the grocery store clerk to the wait staff, they remember us! This was our second time staying at the Royal slander and as always, the resort is extremely clean and well maintained and the staff is very friendly. Service at the restaurants, as well, as around the pool and on the beach are excellent!
Make sure to try some of their specialty drinks, like Banana Monkey, Miami Vice and Bushwacker!

First time in Cancun this past week (Jan 14-21, 2012) and had a wonderful vacation. Impressed with the resort and its sister resorts as well. Stayed in their smaller unit, but with two double beds, a small table, large closet, microwave and mini fridge we were more than satisfied with the space (it was just two of us). Water is purified at the hotel, staff friendly and helpful, reasonable prices at the market. Food was solid and not insanely expensive (except for the Italian buffet night), but we enjoyed getting out of the resort and exploring a bit on our own. While the hotel runs free shuttles, we preferred the frequency of the buses (less than $1 pp) to get around along the strip and into downtown. Pool and beach was nice, however many people reserved their chairs well before 9am despite posted signs (no enforcement). Also of note, the resort was tall enough that half of the chairs along the pool were in the shade for half of the day. Happy hours were notable and enjoyed daily, as were the swim-up bars. I think I enjoyed the pools at the Royal Sands better, because of their size and dedicated lap pool (which of course was not enforced either so kids were playing as i was trying to swim). Beds and pillows were my least favorite part of the stay... they were fine but as a side sleeper I found it very uncomfortable and my hips were in pain all week. Overall a very enjoyable place for a relaxing vacation!

Spent a week, Jan 7 - 14 2012. Accommodations were fantastic as well as the staff. We liked the fact that the Royal Carribean and Royal Mayan were connected by a walk way which gave us the opportunity to enjoy their amenities too. Food excellent. Can't say enough about the Royal Resorts. Can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the back of the restaurant and some of the pool area, with beautiful palm trees...

Fantastic place to relax. I highly recommend the bar below Paco Taco's. William makes a very tasty bloody mary and my husband likes the bushwacker. Very clean and well maintained facility. The hospitality is superb!! We were there in Mar 2011 and returned for New Year's Eve 2011. Enough can't be said about the Islander. We will definitely return to the Islander when returning to Cancun.

Room Tip: Ask for upper level suites so that you can have morning coffee over looking the ocean.

My wife and I stayed with her family for the week of 12/24/11 to 12/31/11. This was my first trip to Cancun, and I was very pleased. The resort itself is very clean and spacious. The suites have plenty of room and we had a wonderful view of the ocean from our beachfront suite. The pool area is nice, complete with a swim up bar that was fun to hang out at. There were lots of lounge chairs, but the majority were "reserved" by guests who left towels on them by 10 AM. Because the resort towers were so high, the sun would usually go behind them in the afternoon and you would be left in the shade.

The beach, on the other hand, was far more enjoyable. There were plenty of lounge chairs, private thatched-roof umbrellas, clean white sand, and plenty of sunshine. The staff would frequently come by to ask if we needed anything, and a flag was available to put in the sand to get their attention when your margarita needed a refill. :) There were hardly any vendors on the beach and we never felt annoyed or badgered. The staff were very helpful, friendly (although not quite as friendly as the Jamaican people!), and spoke English fairly well.

We very much enjoyed the happy hour, which offered 1/2 price drinks every day from 3-6 PM. The drinks were made well and didn't seem watered down. They also had a nice selection of Mexican beer (all for the same price). I'd highly recommend the Bohemia or Negra Modelo. The food at the Cayo Largo restaurant was decent, though as with any resort was somewhat overpriced. Many times we would order the Nachos Grande to be delivered to the beach, and they were very good. Probably our favorite thing on the menu were the grouper fish tacos at Paco's. They were excellent! Had them 3 times that week! If you want, there is also a small market in the resort that has almost anything you could need. We would usually buy a few gallons of water to put in the fridge and fill up our water bottles throughout the day. There is a desk at the resort as well run by the Thomas More company which organizes excursions if you are interested. They were extremely helpful, and helped us book snorkeling and zip lining trips, as well as arranged for our transportation to and from the airport.

As a guest of the Royal Islander, you also have access to the other Royal Resorts. The Royal Caribbean is right next door, and the Royal Mayan is on the opposite side of the Caribbean. We ventured over to the Caribbean one morning because we had heard they had the "best breakfast," only to find that it was the exact same buffet as the one at our hotel.

What I was most surprised about was how quiet the resort was. It was fairly busy, though it never felt crowded, but we were completely relaxed because there were never any noise disturbances. This provided a really nice atmosphere during the day where we could lounge on the beach and soak up the sun without a DJ on the microphone trying to get guests to participate in poolside games. However, we were somewhat disappointed at the lack of activity offered at the hotel after around 9 PM. Everything seemed to shut down, even the bars.

Overall, we had a wonderful, relaxing trip, and we were all very pleased with the cleanliness and atmosphere of the Royal Islander. It is definitely a place for families, though, so if you're looking for a party, you should probably look elsewhere.
