My husband and I travel often to Mexico and usually stop in Cancun before traveling to Merida, or the Maya Riviera. And-- we scuba dive too, so it's just a 15 minute taxi to the Isla Mujeras ferry. Since we've going to Mexico since the mid-70's, we have both been completely bowled over by the development and really prefer to get off the beaten track. I mean, what's a real vacation if you can't get away from a Marriott?
I found this fabulous place right here on Trip Advisor, and it was perfect! The short taxi ride from the airport (which we shared with a Mexican couple) was really inexpensive and we were quickly whisked far away from the huge hotels cluttering the beaches.
Hotel el Rey Caribe has got to be one of the best "deals" around Cancun. It's an easy 2 block walk to a grocery and the bus station and hey-- you will LOVE the luxury buses! They are air-conditioned, the seats go back and there are movies! It cost us $60 to go all the way to Merida-- MUCH easier and cheaper than renting a car and trying to drive over the sudden topes (bumps).
When you arrive, you walk up to what looks like an old mission and through a lovely wrought iron gate to check in. I did everything on-line 6 weeks in advance, and everything was set for us. the people were lovely-- helpful and informative. Our room was big with a fan and air-conditioning, and they are pretty ecological too-- which we love.
There is a main dining strip about 2 blocks away full of clubs, restaurants and action-- if you want it, or you can just while the time away by their small pool surrounded by lush gardens.
Breakfast is included and we will definitely return there. Supposedly it's been around since the mid-80's so we were really happy to have discovered it.
