My husband and I travel often to Mexico and usually stop in Cancun before traveling to Merida, or the Maya Riviera. And-- we scuba dive too, so it's just a 15 minute taxi to the Isla Mujeras ferry. Since we've going to Mexico since the mid-70's, we have both been completely bowled over by the development and really prefer to get off the beaten track. I mean, what's a real vacation if you can't get away from a Marriott?

I found this fabulous place right here on Trip Advisor, and it was perfect! The short taxi ride from the airport (which we shared with a Mexican couple) was really inexpensive and we were quickly whisked far away from the huge hotels cluttering the beaches.

Hotel el Rey Caribe has got to be one of the best "deals" around Cancun. It's an easy 2 block walk to a grocery and the bus station and hey-- you will LOVE the luxury buses! They are air-conditioned, the seats go back and there are movies! It cost us $60 to go all the way to Merida-- MUCH easier and cheaper than renting a car and trying to drive over the sudden topes (bumps).

When you arrive, you walk up to what looks like an old mission and through a lovely wrought iron gate to check in. I did everything on-line 6 weeks in advance, and everything was set for us. the people were lovely-- helpful and informative. Our room was big with a fan and air-conditioning, and they are pretty ecological too-- which we love.

There is a main dining strip about 2 blocks away full of clubs, restaurants and action-- if you want it, or you can just while the time away by their small pool surrounded by lush gardens.

Breakfast is included and we will definitely return there. Supposedly it's been around since the mid-80's so we were really happy to have discovered it.

Room Tip: Hmm- I would probably ask for a room on the 2nd floor toward the back.

The best things about this hotel is it quiet and is a short walking distance from the main bus station. The rooms are clean and nice, the water was just about hot. Staff are friendly and helpful.Breakfast is lovely but you have to pay over the basics, this is cheap though. We would stay again as the atmosphere is good! .

The word Ecotel is used by the owner, but boy they do work at it. It's refreshing to find the results in a garden with large Palms and other interesting trees which are the direct result of their grey water catchment / storage system. Birds and other wildlife are at home here. You get a good welcome here and Maritza the owner / manager is friendly has good English and is helpful. She runs the Hotel well and all staff share her pleasant style. Breakfast is a little on the slow side (allow 45mins) but is a good standard and served in a friendly manner. Location is downtown close to the bus station and a supermarket, and rooms have a fridge and gas hob (hot water is also available to make tea / coffee). A pleasant laid back place to stay!

Room Tip: Rooms at far side of garden are good size and quiet.

I was dreading having to stay in Cancun - after a trip to Tulum - but had an early flight, so thought it would be easier. I was so pleased with this hotel. The rooms were clean, spacious and quiet. The inner plaza was indeed an oasis from the hot streets outside. The staff were very nice and clearly cared about my experience. The pool is smaller than I expected, but I didn't really need to use it. It was nice to have for a cooling dip - which guests did use. The hotel is in a good location - within 2-3 blocks of the bus station and in an area of town with lots of food options yet not too touristy. I would stay there again.

Extremely pleasant atmosphere in this nice hotel: helpful and funny staff, nice garden, environment friendly concept, very good breakfast and fruit juices.
Service at the restaurant and at the reception is excellent.
Location is in the center of Cancun, there is not much too see. Good place to stay for those who want to avoid the beach hotels and resorts.
Fair price.
