This was our second time at the Riu Palace Las Americas and it was just as amazing as the first time.We stayed there from April 3rd-7th. Everything from the staff, food, service, cleanliness to the location was perfect.
A lot of people complain about the smell. Well the smell is the ocean, not a musty smell. You will find that at any hotel in Mexico.
The nightlife entertainment at the hotel is great. My boyfriend and I actually got to be a part of one of the shows and had a great time. They really know how to keep you entertained there if you don't want to go outside the hotel, or even before you leave for the night.
ABUNDIO! The best service we received was from our bartender Abundio in the bar inside the first lobby, he really made the trip fun. He would see us walking in and he would start our drinks for us so by time we sat down at the bar they were ready. He just was very enjoyable to be around. The front desk was helpful as well. They were always very pleasant and accommodating. We stayed in an amazing ocean view room right in the middle and loved waking up to that every morning.
All the food was great, however the steakhouse is our favorite. Along with the buffet that they offer there. Both times that we have stayed in Cancun, we have only had dinner at the hotel by choice. We went and explored other restaurants and found that they offer a lot of the same stuff that is prepared at the hotel.
We also did the photo session that is offered there through adventure photos and LOVED them. Again, we did this last yr as well and we were just as pleased with how they turned out. I would recommend to anyone that wants to spend a little bit of extra money on quality photos to take advantage of the beautiful scenery and do it!
Lastly, don't forget to tip the servers/bartenders or anyone really that is serving you just a few dollars. You would be surprised by how well they treat and remember you if you do. Plus they work extremely hard!
We can't wait to go back again next year.

This was my fourth trip to this hotel. Consistently great food, service, adequate rooms (a little dated). We stayed for 4 nights for a bachelor party. Location is amazing (5-10 min walking distance from Coco Bongo, Bulldog and the City). Some of us got upgraded. Used an agent to find and book the trip for all 6 guys called www.tripguy.com - good service and value.

Me and Hubby stayed at RPLA the first week in March.
Flew with Thomson Premier from Birmingham, we always try and upgrade to Premium on long haul flights. This flight was quite dissapointing due to the fact that two young children in the seats behind us were allowed to run riot the whole 11 hours without a word from either parent or any of the cabin crew? We and several other passengers all thought Premium was for over 14's? You don't pay that extra money for that? Anyway, I digress, thats nothing to do with this fabulous hotel other than we arrived far more stressed than we expected to.
We had transportation from the airport to ourselves and check in was quick, but we were the only ones. I had emailed the hotel two weeks before depaurture and requested pool / sea view. We were given a side room. We asked to move and were promised a front room in a couple of days as soon as one was available. This happened, as promised.
The hotel was full for our week but all of the restaurants coped very well and they never seemed rushed or crowded. Service at bars and restaurants is very slick and quick.
You have to book al a carte restaurants with guest services, people seemed dissapointed that they couldn't always book for that evening. The easiest thing to do is book two or three at the same time for different nights which you are allowed to do. Steak House was fab and Krystals was just beautiful. Would not recommend the Mexican which sounds stange but this seemed to have sub standard food and sub standard staff? Did not try the Brazilian but heard good reports. This restaurant doubled as an Italian for lunch only. No need to book and was delicious. We ate there four lunch times and were only there a week.
The buffet restaurant was also very good with lots of choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Shows in the evening were fun and not to be taken seriously. The Lobby bar is very comfortable and the drinks flow freely. Lovely cocktails and don't forget the champagne! This is also a great place to people watch. The wifi seems to still work quite well in there too.
As for the night club at Riu Cancun next door, if you're expecting Pacha you will be seriously dissapointed. V small room with a bar in the middle and mirrors down one wall. 24 hour sports bar in there is worth a visit though. Riu Cancun is a nice hotel and you can use all of its facilities, the same is with Riu Caribe which is a couple of miles along the road. A new Riu is nearly built next to the Caribe but not sure if the same rule will apply in this one as it is also a Palace?
Pool sunbeds are a bit of a farce, we got decent beds every day but only due to the fact Hubby went for a run at 5.30 in the morning? There are lots of sunbeds but a majority seem to be in the shade due to all of the palm trees that look lovely but are no good for catching the rays....
If you don't want to get up at the crack of dawn and join in the sun bed farce, then don't. Lots of beds on the beach which is right there and serviced by the waiters. Beach at RPLA is v small but if you make the 30 second strol over some small rocks you can be on the Riu Cancuns beach wich is much bigger with lovely sand and don't forget, you can use their facilitie so you will be taken care of. Please note, they can't use your hotel....
Didn't use the spa, but the outside whirlpool really was as hot as a bath!
The hotel has a good situation near shops, bars and restaurants but really, if you're looking for a relaxed holiday where everything is taken care of then thisis the place so why leave?
I've been back a few weeks and have been witing for my post holiday blues to pass before writing this. It's a bit all over the place and I've probably forgotten lots of stuff but its honest and truthful.
Any questions, please just ask....
K :o)

ps. Ladies, ALL floors are quite slippy, including the room floors so beware of heels. I was skidding about in my wedges!

Room Tip: Floors five to seven with a pool / sea view. Rooms on eigth floor have no balconies. All room deco...

Tough exam ... great results..

We put this hotel through a tough test and it did excelled !!. This was our second time on a RIU property (first time in Dominican Republic). We didn't experience any difference in the quality of the service despite staying at the hotel during the highest occupancy weekend of the hotel (easter weekend)

The hotel is beautiful and the service is outstanding. Let me tell you that we checked in on Easter Friday, so the hotel was 100% occupancy. When checking in, at around noon, the staff made the arrangements to keep our luggage and granted access to the hotel facilities. (pool restaurant beach, towel service) until the check-in time. We even got a room with an spectacular view (room 815)

Overall: I didn't notice any unpleasant odour in the hotel or the vicinity. The gardens, the pools, the jacuzzis, the showers well in perfect maintenance.

Food: The buffet food was so good that you don't need to worry if you couldn't get in any of the restaurants. In Easter week everything was booked 2 days in advance.

Let me tell you some other advantages of the hotel:
Animation staff. Besides the usual activities they'll help you to get access to the best clubs in town.

Location Location Location: There's a small shopping mall just in front of the hotel, with a convenience store/starbucks/bank and souvenir stores with good prices. Also the hotel is walking distance of the best clubs in town. And a $10 taxi ride to the 2 best malls in the city.

The only thing that I'd would change on the hotel is to put more palm trees as I like the sun but under the shadow of a big umbrella or a nice coconut palm tree.

Service
My wife and I travelled here with our 2 year old and had an amazing experience. We chose this hotel style resort because we wanted our room close to the beach so our little fella could get changed, fed and have a nap without much hassle. The people that work here are very courteous and took care of our every request quickly. Some stand outs were 2 servers and a manager in the buffet, Rebecah, Rigo and Nicolas . The front desk staff are all awesome.

Room
We stayed in room 142. Very nice, cleaned thoroughly everyday as well as restocked with beer and soft drinks. The ceiling in the shower needs a little work.

Food
We were working on a three hour time difference so it was difficult to wait until 6:30pm for the a la carte restaurants to open, especially with a 2 year old. We only managed to get to the Mexican restaurant and the Steakhouse, both were awesome. The buffet was pretty much like most resort buffets, very plentiful but not as good as the restaurants.

Beach
Very nice beach, not much surf and we were always able to find seats together. The server was always ready to bring you drinks, we had to turn him away a few times otherwise we'd have been hammered. My only complaint about it might be the amount of cigarette butts and the odd piece of garbage, maybe another garbage can and more ashtrays would fix this.

Pools
The family pool was beautiful, and well looked after. If your a pool person you may want to reserve a seat early as they tend to be reserved by 8am. No opinion on the adult pool, other than at the end of the day it looked a little more cloudy and yellowish than the family pool. My guess is that some people didn't want to lose their seat at the swim up pool bar to use the bathroom.
