We just returned from 7 nights at the Posada del Mar on the ground floor of the main building (old building?). We chose this section mainly because we have a 2 year old who we didn’t want to have easy access to the pool. It was also nice to be able to go outside during her naps and be able to wander a few yards away with the monitor without being stuck on a balcony.

First the positives – this hotel is the best location that I saw on the island! Right across the street from the beach but without the street noise because the hotel is set so far off the road. Our ground floor room was quiet even when the bar on the corner had loud concerts. We had family staying on the 3rd floor who had a lot of noise from the bar (Jax), however. Easy walking distance to shopping, restaurants, and banks and zero pedestrians. Lots of taxis and pedicabs right outside the front gate too. The pool was great. There’s a small wading pool separated from the main pool by concrete stepping stones that was great for our toddler. We used the wifi in the lobby when it was working, and when it wasn’t, the restaurant staff was nice and shared their access code with us. There was always fresh water in the lobby and we never saw the front desk without a staff person.

We loved the sand and flowering shrubs that cover the grounds in the old section. The grounds in the new section, surrounding the pool, were pretty sad compared to the more well-established front of the hotel. They were all very clean however and groundskeepers seemed to be busy all day every day doing what they could to make things presentable.

The negatives – the old section is comparable to about a 2-star hotel. We paid almost $100/night and were disappointed with the quality of the rooms. Our closet doors were broken and there were no hangers. The air conditioners were very loud and the lowest setting on the ceiling fan was too fast to use very often. The air conditioners are on the balconies in the old section and are too loud to carry on a conversation while they’re running. The edges of the floors were not clean.

The first room that we looked at had two beds, but they were very small doubles. I wasn’t comfortable with my 2 year old sleeping such a narrow surface over tile floors, so we ended up in a room with one king, which was fine. We asked for and received extra pillows which were appreciated. The housekeepers did fine with what they had to work with, but we were not impressed. We were there for 7 nights and I don’t think our sheets ever got changed. They appeared to be shaken out daily, but that’s it. We know this because one of our sheets had a large (faint) orange stain on it. We were given 2 towels, one hand towel and one bath mat per day even though there were 3 of us staying in the room. No washcloths.

When people checked out of rooms on the upper floors and they were more thoroughly cleaned, the housekeepers swept everything off of the balconies, including mop water. My brother-in-law got dirt dumped on his head once and I was completely flooded off of our balcony with dirty water being pushed off of the 3rd floor. The same thing happened to another family member staying on the first floor. I understand that this is Mexico and we were not staying at the Hilton, but not checking for guests below before you dump dirty wash water off of the balcony is really not acceptable anywhere.

Our room didn’t have a back door, but most do and they look out onto what appears to be a bombed-out area in the back that is full of stray cats, pieces of concrete and overgrown bushes. Absolutely nothing has been done to improve the back courtyard and it looks awful. All of the upper floor rooms enter through the back and overlook this area.

Overall, I felt that we paid for the location only for this room. We could have stayed in much nicer accommodations a few blocks away from the beach. The room itself was worth about $60 a night. We loved the location however and might be willing to try again in a newer section as it seems people have had better experiences there.

Room Tip: Rooms in the old section are very run down.

I have nothing but great things to say about the Posada! We love staying here, love the employees as they always make it a great time and we've really connected with them. It's like a home away from home! It is clean, maintained fairly well and has great food and beverages! You also cannot beat their pool! It's quite big for Isla standards. It isn't the nicest place we've stayed at by any means but we aren't high maintenance people either... if you are, don't stay at the Posada... in fact just don't come to Isla period. Isla is more rustic and authentic which makes the entire atmosphere so incredible (if you're into that of course). If you are laid back, looking for a great, relaxing time and spend most of your days on the beach or by the pool then the Posada is perfect for you! You cannot beat the location! Right out the back alley of the hotel and you're right on Hidalgo! Also, don't get mad at the front desk people because they aren't as efficient as you would like.. you're in Mexico, therefore you are running on Mexican time! When they get to it, they get to it but it will get done.. just don't get your undie's in a bundle! :)

Room Tip: Pick the newest building! We prefer ground floor as we have a small child but do like the 2nd and 3rd floor room as you can see the ocean.

We stayed at Posada del Mar from January 22 to February 3. My sisters and brother in law stayed in the room next door (325 and 326) in the new building. Our rooms were kept spotless and the staff was very friendly. I see that some people addressed the issue of the glass wall in the shower. We just hung our beach towels over the glass partition every day to dry and the problem was solved. I'm sure the reason the wall doesn't go to the ceiling is to help reduce the humidity in the bathroom so the walls don't rot and mold. We did not have to give a credit card at check in because our room was prepaid by money order through our travel agent at Mornings in Mexico. The grounds were nice as was the pool. The restaurant served coffee in the mornings but I don't drink coffee so I don't know how it was. It also seemed to have food available at all times even when it appeared to be closed. It does not open until 9am. We have seen people eating breakfast and lunch there and saw a group getting food after 6pm. You can ask the bartenders about it.
About the bartenders, Romy and Lea, they are wonderful and helpful. We all fell in love with them. I would stay at this hotel again just because of them. We spent every evening of our stay in the Palapa bar and got to know them very well. Romy seems to work 18 hours a day most days so tip them well. Also try their strawberry margaritas, they are delicious.
The hotel is right across the street from a nice beach. We preferred that to Playa Norte because it was way less crowded.
We did have to give a $100 US deposit for the safe lock but had no problem getting it back. Checkout took about 1 minute. The beds are comfortable, our airconditioning worked great, and the maids cleaned our room spotlessly everyday. Even mopping the floors and providing towel art. They usually come by later in the mornings or afternoons while everyone is at the beach. Our hot water was plentiful in the shower.

We will be back next year.

Room Tip: We liked the rooms in the new building with a refrigerator and safe. We were in 325 and 326 and could see the ocean around the palm trees.

We chose Posada del Mar based on reviews here on Trip Advisor. We were looking for low budget and location. We bought our trip as a air/hotel package and figured the hotel portion worked out to about $70.00 per night. That's a really nice price for what we got. Nice hotel room with balcony (partial ocean view) right across from the beach with free beach chairs included. (Beach umbrella 50 pesos extra). The free wireless in the lobby was a nice bonus. Some people reported being able to get it in their room also. The restaurant did not appear to be open regular hours. I think they were open for lunch most days, but I don't recall seeing them open for breakfast or dinner. Maybe we were just out too early to notice? We did order lunch at the beach one day (beach service was available) and the prices were good, as was the food. Nice sized portion of chicken nachos was 49 pesos and a club sandwich with fries was 55 pesos. Pina coladas (etc) were 45 pesos. The location was convenient to everything. Half a block to rent a golf cart. Four blocks to the all-important 7-11 (morning coffee....open 24 hours). Four blocks to the bank. One block to get any boat tours you might want. Three blocks off Hidalgo, the main drag for restaurants. I'd stay here again if i was on a budget (which is pretty much all the time). :)

Great location, close to the beach and downtown, the staff was nice and helpful. Wifi is in the lobby. Our room was great, on the third floor in the new building. Had both a safe and minifridge. Only downside was the bathroom, nice and clean, but terribly design. The wall facing the beds and most of the room is only half wall, the rest is glass, where you can see the shower, and if the showercurtain is open you also see the toilet, and to top it off the glass doesent go all the way up, so noise carries throug to the room. Would definetly recommend this place, but try to find a room with a private bathroom.
