Occidental Playacar has improved wonderfully since our visit in 2010. The rooms, linens, and food have taken the biggest steps. We always thought the staff and grounds were terrific and they remain so. The beach has been restored and is a joy to use. For food, we'd recommend the Mexican Restaurant as the best both in food and service quality. The Buffet has many more and fresher selections for breakfast and dinner. The lunch, near the pools, has a more limited selection but there is always a good salad and soup and a good selection of meat and fish. (The fish served throughout the resort was outstanding this year.) The weather was good this year (Jan 28 - Feb 11, 2012) -- last year is was chilly.

Room Tip: The First Club rooms are greatly improved.

This property is in a great location, you will get what you have paid for. The staff are wonderful and go out of their way to assist you. Yes, the rooms are dated, but as you stay there mostly to sleep only they are passable. The food is sufficient, we did not try the specialty dinners. The wine though, not sure if their buyers have ever tried the product themselves. I have made and tasted homemade wines that were far superior. This resort is exactly as I would expect a three star to be like. We have stayed at five star rated resorts, so we can compare.
Great resort for the budget minded, somewhat older crowd. The nightly entertainment was to put in mildly, lame.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms close to the lobby.

This is a much smaller resort than I am use to but very friendly, most accommodating and the staff are very good especially Jacaboo (works breakfast, dinner & server on the beach), Abel, Freddy (bar staff @ the pool area outside of the Mexican restaurant) Ivonne, Cindy and Denis(F) @ the front desk.
These employees go over and above, friendly, helpful, cheery and warm wonderful servers. Anibal room attendant, another great employee.
The breakfasts are great...lots of good mexican fare to choose from, eggs many, many different ways and sometimes fresh donuts as well. My fiance really likes the bacon, my favourite was salsa, eggs, gaucamole & refried beans.
Lunch by the pool was always good too...lots of choices, plus fresh fajitas, pasta and always grilling up chicken, salmon, chicken & regular burgers. The pizza was good, thin crust, lots of different toppings and fresh.
Dinner was okay, nothing really over the top except for the "Chef's Regional Night"; whole chickens, oven roasted turkey, lamb, pork, salmon, seafood mix, ribs, roast beef. Very good. The Mexican was very good as well but for meat choices would have to be the "Chef's Regional"
We booked into the Italian al la carte-fantastic; nice setup in the middle of the room with different types of appetizers, plus what you could pick off of the menu. A few suggestions, resort should offer specialty coffees, such as cappucinos, espressos, Spanish in the al la carte without EXTRA COST.
(their is the 'gourmet coffee' hut just beside the pizza booth, but for the speciality coffees you need to pay extra. House wine, red-tasted more like vinegar, as though the grapes never really matured on the vine and processed anyway. When the resort didn't have the regular house wine but were offering the Frontera from Chile way, way better. This same wine can be purchased in Ontario (i have tried it), way better choice and HAS BODY!!!!
The resort only offers Corona as the beer of choice, we picked up some of the brand we prefer, better tasting. The mini bars are stocked only with water, where again being use to a larger resort where these places put in beer, pop and sometimes small snacks.
if you arrive late, after 10:00pm there is no food available and only the disco is open for drinks.

But since 2008 which was the last maya trip for my fiance & I, the resorts have all done an AMAZING job reclaiming the beach area. There is plenty of beautiful sandy beach, loads of chairs and you are not feeling too close to the next group of sun worshipers.

The resort keeps you busy if you want to be with many activities, night parties and fun things!
Allegro is so close to Playa del Carmen, that we walked in either during the day or our most favourite time was right after an early dinner strolling around and exploring!
This area is extremely safe and never once felt uncomfortable or concerned.
I would walk (by myself) first thing in the morning...if doing so be sure to bring water, a hat and not like me remember to hydrate when returing.

We had the best ever room, 5804...waking up having a coffee with only 5 steps to the pool and only a few more down the stairs @ being on the beach! Walking the beach into Playa, you can admire other resorts as well as the many homes for rent/sale, ending up by Senor Frogs.

one small note is we took a taxi (my fiance worked out a great deal with one of the reputable services just outside where the bus would p/u to take to resort) because we got to the resort, signed in & bracelets on about 3-4 hours ahead of the buses.

Room Tip: We had 5804...best ever spot BUT because it was right at the tip of where the pool/beach are located...

Location!! Location!!Location
Stayed from Feb 16-23 2012
This hotel is located perfectly in the Mayan Riviera. It's about 45 minutes from the airport in Cancun but after that the area it is located in is very centralized.A very nice scenic and safe 15 minute walk to get to the village of Playa Del Carmen and it's famous 5th avenue shopping area, Playa Del Carmen is a must! On your way there you even get to see some Mayan ruins if you walk by the street , if you want romantic Playa Del Carmen is accessible by the beach. Also instead of turning right for playa Del Carmen you go left you have about 3 minutes from the hotel you have the Playacar market a small shopping area that sell souvenirs, beer and you have a drugstore. You can also find a Starbucks with FREE INTERNET.

Now for the hotel this is a 3,5 star hotel and it is a little outdated it must of been great to look at 15 years ago but who cares you are not there for the room we spent all of our time outside anyway all you need is a place to sleep. The beds were comfortable, room clean, fresh linen everyday. As for the leaky roof we can't say it did not rain. The resort itself is a nice size ,all short walks to get to the pools the quiet and action pool. The beach is awesome great white sand, beautiful ocean. The food was excellent we went to the buffet and had a good selection. The a la Carte is a bust it was always booked full the buffet was sufficient.
The staff are very polite and helpful ,they were just awesome!!
Now for the Bad...
The concierge are a pain in the .... they harass you continuously to attend one of occidental information session and promise you an upgrade to their 5 star hotel further down.We did it the Canadian way we were polite and said no on the first day and on the second but on the third we had to be a bit more firm then they left us alone. The beach lounge chairs definitely need to be replaced.

If you do any excursion Xel-ha is an unforgettable experience.

I would say you get your bang for your buck at this resort and we would return.

My wife and I spent 2 weeks at the allegro playacar and had a very nice time. The staff was very pleasant, the room service was great and the food was excellent- especially at the Mexican restaurant. A special shout out to Don Cesare- thank you for such terrific service. the beach is beautiful and the pool was also very nice. Also a special thank you to Neri and all of the entertainment staff who were always terrific. It goes without saying that we had a great time surrounded by great people - from the Air Transat staff to the hotel staff. the only negative was the persistence of those trying to sell time share- we found that you had to be firm in order for them to get the picture. other than this little annoyance a wonderful, relaxing time was had.

OK... I have never placed any reviews for hotels; however, I would like to share my vacation experiences at the Allegro Playacar so you can make a better informed decision before you book your trip. Upon arrival Feb 17, 2012 we were checked into room 3115. The room is on the second floor of one of the the "villas". The roof is made from dried grass and ours had three holes in it and smelled very moldy. Our shower did not have ANY pressure and the A/C did not work. After complaining several times, we were finally moved to room 4204 - a first floor room on the other side of the resort. This room did have a working shower; however, the A/C, phone, TV and ceiling fan all did not work. After making complaints, the maintenance person came to fix the ceiling fan, but that was all that was fixed (we were told the A/C was being fixed the following day, but this never happened). This room was musty and humid, and all of our clothes ended up damp and smelling musty the whole week. our hammock was infested with bugs and we both received numerous bites. There are no alarm clocks in this hotel, so bring your own. When I went to the front desk to ask for one, they said that because it is a three star hotel they do not have alarm clocks.

The a-la-carts were nothing special, the menu was limited and the food seemed to be pre-cooked as the pasta was dry and the vegetables were soggy. The buffet was not bad; there was a decent sized selection of apps, mains, salads, fruit/veggies and desserts. Unfortunately, most of the fruit being served was canned or flavorless. The only thing that saved eating at the hotel was the service provided by the staff - they all do what they can to make your eating experience enjoyable and entertaining.

If you are looking for nightlife or any sort of evening entertainment this hotel is not for you. There is a huge stage in the courtyard, unfortunately it was only used to find Mr. Allegro one night, Mrs. Allegro the next night, and singing karaoke on the third night, then the events repeat themselves. It was funny that during the karaoke night at around 11pm the staff shut down the "party" as one room complained about the noise and sent around 50 people out of the area and suggested they visit the "disco" - a room that was 20 feet wide by 20 feet long and barely qualified as a lounge.

The beach is great and you will have great service from the staff if you tip well - that goes the same for the pool areas. Lunches by the pool are good and have plenty of selection. Aside from the pool, the only redeeming feature of this hotel is its location. It is only a five minute cab ride to 5th ave in Playa Del Carmen, which is the shopping/restaurant/entertainment district. We ended up going there almost every evening as there was NOTHING to do at the hotel.

Beware of Pablo the "Lomas Travel" representative. He is a salesman and will make you great "deals". Two of our three excursions were great (Xel-ha and Tulum/Coba) but the third (para-sailing) was a disaster. The day did not happen as it was "promised". Our private car, direct trip, turned into a tour bus carrying over 30 people and making 5 stops. The two hour activity took almost 5 hours, and did not include everything we were promised. Be careful, as Pablo tells you what you want to hear so he can get your business.

We had requested late check out as our return flight was at 11pm. When we first made this request, we were told it would cost $40usd; however, when our check-out day arrived, they attempted to charge us $60usd instead. They did eventually give us a 6pm check out for $40usd, but for some reason when I went to pay upon check out the girl requested my passport so she could make a photocopy of it as I was paying cash and "it is the law". I payed with MC as they did not require to verify or copy your ID for that method of payment.???

We were a group of twelve on vacation that booked 6 rooms. For the most part our experiences were the same. This was not a comfortable "resort", the food was average, no nightlife, bugs, no AC, and an overall moldy smell. If you get a good price and can get through some of these things in the 35 degree heat then I suggest go for it. If you are looking for a fun, comfortable, relaxing resort then this place is probably not for you. I will state again that the servers were great. If you want more information email me at krod@live.ca.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the ground level, but make sure the shower and the A/C works! Keep complaining...

OAllegroP, Assistant Manager at Allegro Playacar, responded to this reviewResponded 1 March 2012

Dear K R,

We regret to hear that we couldn’t achieve your complete satisfaction during your recent vacation. Our main goal is to provide the best experience to all our guests and it seems that we fell short on this during your stay.

I was very concerned while reading your comments as our rooms are usually in very good condition, and our maintenance and housekeeping staff works diligently 24/7 to make sure our rooms are in good working order. I’m very sorry for the inconvenience with the AC. Our maintenance staff is in the process of replacing the actual system for a new one. I will share your comments with our housekeeping department and maintenance staff to verify the problems you had in the rooms with the proper functioning of the room’s equipment

Unfortunately, due the tropical climate in this area of Mexico, it is common that we have high humidity. Our housekeeping staff works hard to avoid this situation in our rooms. We also have a weekly fumigation program for rooms and public areas to avoid the insects. As we live in a tropical area it is a challenge.

We are very sorry that you did not enjoy our a la carte restaurants. Usually the feedback we receive on these restaurants is very good. We appreciate your comments though, and we will share it with our executive chef as he is always looking to improve our menus. We respect your opinion about the food in our buffet however I would like to say that all our fruit is fresh; it is not canned.

Thank you for the good comments you made of our staff, we are proud to have them as part of our team as they work hard to please our guests.

For entertainment at night we do have a variety of shows that includes guest participation, karaoke, and different shows with our staff. The shows ends around 11:00 pm, and we respect the schedule as a matter of concern for the comfort of all our guests. Thank you for the comment you made about the beach, we are lucky to be located in this amazing place of the Mexican Caribbean. Located just 5 minutes by taxi or 30 minutes walking to the 5th avenue, the touristic place of Playa del Carmen.

I regret to hear about the negative experience you had with Lomas Travel. We will share your comment with the management of this travel agency as it is important to us that our partners focus on delivering a high level of service to our guests.

Lastly, I’m very sorry for the situation at the front desk. The late checkout charge is $40 USD until 6:00 p.m., and after that time the cost will be $60 USD. I have shared your comment with our front desk manager and the corrective measures will be taken to provide the right information to our guests moving forward. Regarding the comment of the passport, effectively it is necessary to make a copy of your ID to make any transaction in cash.

On behalf of our entire staff, we apologize for the inconveniences you had during your stay. Please do not hesitate to contact me in case you want to share any additional comments.
