Our family of seven vactioned at the Riu Yucatan 3-19-thru 3-26 2102.
We had 5 adults and 7 kids ages 9 to 18, This resort was a perfect spot for spring break. White sandy beaches, aqua water, clean comfortable rooms, great food, the entertainers were delighful, pools were great and the shows were okay. Most of the time we were too tired after a full day of sun and activities to stay up for the show as it is late. (9:45) The sign up restuarants were great. We ate at all three of them and enjoyed them. Service was great. Those people work very hard. The kids loved playing the games with entertainment. They seemed to have alot of things for them to do. We did think the shooting could be improved safety wise. The kids missed the relay races they had in Punta Cana Palace. We spent a day in Xel-ha and that is very worth the 100.00 per head. It is also a all- inclusive and everything flows like clock work. Something for everone to do. The kids loved swimming with the dolphins (extra price) We could not get it all in and we went from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The parasailing (barter for price) on the beach was fun. WE shopped one afternoon at fifth Ave. but found when we got to the airport items were less than 5th Ave. and we thought we had bartered strong. The kids said the airport was like a shopping center. WE were delayed two hours so they shopped. I would again go to this area and it was my 16 Riu and I have been treated well at all of them except the one in Costa Rica. That manager was rude. I have had excellant experience with all the Riu"s I have visited and would recommend them. Just hope they got a new manager in Costa Rica.

Room Tip: Close to the ocean but away from the theatre.

We booked the restaurant early in the morning. The starters were nice, there was a variety. For the main course I had fish. This was undercooked. Not raw but not properly cooked. The desert was not very nice either. The wine was nice and served in pretty glasses. Service was poor and at the end of the meal they asked us to leave in 5 minutes time as they wanted to set the table for the next booking so we were rushed out of the restaurant. This was the only meal in Mexico where we were ill afterwards. I would not recommend it.

The Riu Yucatan was the first of the five hotels in the group to be built here (1997) but it has stood the test of time well. The rooms are large with a good shower, sink, loo area, a free mini bar with soft drinks, water and beer, and most amazingly four 1 litre optic bottles of rum, gin, vodka and whisky!!
The grounds are attractive and immaculate and everywhere in and out of the hotel is spotless. Other Riu hotels were available to us for drinks and meals except evening dinner and we took advantage of this - the Riu Playacar lobby bar does excellent cocktails.
The food is plentiful and very well prepared and presented. There is a lot of "show cooking", so the meat and fish, pizza and pasta are always fresh. The choice at all meals is overwhelming and it is hard to limit one's choices. There are three speciality restaurants - Asian, Mexican and Steakhouse, which are available for booking at 7.00am each morning. We didn't bother. We heard that people were queuing to book at 6.30am sometimes and that didn't sound like a holiday activity to us! Besides there was always a Mexican section and steak on the buffet in the main restaurant.
The entertainment team work tirelessly and there is always something going on. However, they do not pressurise you to join in, if you prefer not to.
There are a lot of Americans and Canadians at the resort, who certainly enjoy the drinks from the four bars in and around the pool, and they can become rather noisy when chatting.(It was the start of Spring Break when we were there) There are not many quiet places to sit - the beach is peaceful but it was always windy with large waves and most days there was a red flag, so sea swimming was not possible.
Excursions organised by the holiday reps were expensive, but it is possible to do trips on the local bus service from Playa del Carmen which is a pleasant 35 minute walk away, either on the road or along the beach.
If you are looking for a quiet holiday, this is not for you - go to the Palace next door, but if you want to enjoy the warmth of the sun and the Mexican people and are willing to go with the flow you will have a great time. We would go again.

Room Tip: Rooms are allocated on arrival, and they are all the same.

I never had any intentions to go to Mexico. Tired of the cold, a week without too much work, lets go somewhere.

Price, weather, wife, and last minute, here we came Mexico.

The Riu Yucatan hotel is 15 years old. It is beautiful, very well kept, the grounds are unique. I really enjoy it. The friendly staff, the smiles of all of them made it even better.

There is no pressure for tipping. Any request is always welcome. Any question always answered with a smile.

The food is good. I enjoy the buffets, the restaurants, and the bars. Didn't try the swimming pool but saw people having lots of fun.

The beach is one of the most beautiful I ever saw, and I know beaches in 4 Continents. Kept clean with miles to walk. The Ocean is gorgeous and the water just perfect.

An all inclusive hotel where you can go out at 6:00AM, and walk for an hour without being afraid. Go for a walk at night to a disco, and return at 1:30AM, and again without being bothered at all. The area feels secure, and the people of Mexico is very friendly.

I could keep writting but I just want to say, Thanks Mexico, Thanks Riu. I will be back.

If you want a vacation do not book here. We have stayed at many resorts in Mexico, most of which were 4 and 4.5 star. This hotel is rated a 5 star and I would never give it anything above a 3 star. The Mexican people are always awesome, but the facility itself is a nightmare. Really old, feels dirty even when it's cleaned, there wasn't even lotion or conditioner, and the beds are hard as a rock. And not hard in a good way, in a way similar to the cement floor. The beach is lovely but there are so many resorts along the same beach. We asked for a mattress pad or to be upgraded to a nicer hotel and we were given the run around the entire week. We were given a mattress pad on our last night. What's the point of a vacation if you wake up stiff and tired from tossing and turning all night. I would never recommend this resort to anyone.

If you like direct access to fine sandy beaches, good and plentiful food and drink, the chance to see exotic wildlife, to play tennis for free, good evening entertainment and well equipped rooms with a balcony  - then this is a good choice. The hotel and its grounds are very well maintained.
Food is of an excellent standard.  The main restaurant has a fantastic choice of everything and the menus change daily. The themed restaurants, asian and steak offer good service and well present specialities. The hotel is generous with its drinks - plenty of choice, a number of well-staffed bars, cocktails all day long, waiters who roam around the restaurants to top up your wine, free minibar in the room and every room has optics with gin, rum, tequila and vodka. Evening entertainment is to a professional standard - the Michael Jackson show for example is not to be missed.
Howler Monkeys, Golden Oriel, Agouti, Coati, and Iguana are to be seen in the grounds almost every day and if you include the beaches the list extends to Pelicans, Terns, Frigates and gulls.
The hotel has its drawbacks of course, mostly to do with noisy American guests who shout at each other even when only 2ft apart and loud round-the-pool animation (which to me seemed like 1950's Hi-de-hi) but that's the price you pay for a fairly large popular hotel and can be balanced against the positives. Catering for Americans means that many of the cocktails, soft drinks Cappuccinos etc are too sweet for European taste but the choice is plentiful so after a while you get to know what to select and, thank goodness, the wine is not Californian so it is palatable and indeed much improved on two years ago when it was very 'musty'.
An additional useful feature is that you can use the facilities and take meals in the other three hotels of the same class in Playacar. One, the Lupida is the other side of the golf course, a walk though which is very pleasant and the home of egrets, heron, stilts, vultures and many types of duck. A disappointment is that this land is  private property and thus we were escorted off on one of our three visits, despite the fact that there were no golfers there at the time. Shame to waste such a facility.
So my judgement overall is 'very good' but if anyone at the hotel is interested here are my top 4 areas for improvement:
1.  There's little more likely to put you off your food and drink than people blowing their smoke all over it. Please extend the 'no smoking' rules to all inside areas including the beach restaurants and main bar/reception.
2.  Let's really try to stop people feeding the Howler Monkeys - its not good for the wildlife to become habituated to humans as a source of food and not good for the humans if scratched or bitten.
3.  It's silly to have hundreds of people with their smart phones. iPads, notebooks and laptops crowded together and fighting over seats every morning and evening to get on the wifi. Why not extend the facility through routers to The accommodation blocks (you have the infrastructure to do this already) or if there's a problem with that at least to the restaurants and pool area.
4.  At every meal you  have hot dogs and burgers to cater to American preferences. All I ask is that you do tea with cold milk and provide brown sauce and Marmite at breakfast time - but now I know I've really gone too far!

Room Tip: Pay for a suite. It's worth it ? Their wise block 4

This was my first holiday away with my partner so I just really wanted to have a nice break away.

Well this hotel ticked every box! The beach was just amazing and the sea was gorgeous! Every day the staff would collect the seaweed and dig a hole to get rid of it, they worked so hard!

The food was good, we went for 2 weeks so there was repetition but there was always something we liked to eat. The steak house is definitely worth a visit. The Mexican is okay but expected more.

We had a perfect room, right next to the pool. The beds are fine, yes they are firm but actually it was really nice to lay on. The amount of space in the bed is so nice too! Massive beds. Room number was 5115. Yes it was noisy at night, but after all your on holiday so should be sitting out enjoying the entertainment which was definitely worth a watch. The Michael Jackson show was just amazing, like no entertainment i have seen before! They put on a circus show aswel one night and well, you would expect to have to pay for it, amazing!

The animation team worked so hard! Entertaining throughout the day, aswel as rehersing for the evening show to then presenting the evening show at night. They deserve a massive thank you as they made our holiday.

The wildlife around the hotel is so nice, with monkeys coming down and holding onto your hand, coati's that are so cute, iguanas and more. They were never a bother.

We did a few day trips, the best one we did was quadbiking. Go across to the Riu Tequila just after the archway on the right and book with them, they lead you straight out of the hotel on the quadbikes - you even go through the streets and towns experiencing how the Mexican people live! Best quadbiking trip i have done!

We also went speedboating which was fun as you get to drive your own two person speedboat. We even saw a crocodile! This trip was nice as you got to see how the Mexican people lived.

We also spent the day at Xel-Ha, absolutely gorgeous! We also swam with dolphins here and again it was the best dolphin excursion i have done.

The final trip we did was Xplor, it was okay but we expected a lot more. It is a good trip to experience once as the whole park is built either under or over the ground.

Kia our Thompson Rep was so helpful and always had an answer to any question. They also have a swap box so if you need any extra bits you can get these, then if you have things left over that you don't want to weigh your suitcase down with, you can leave them in the swap box. Clever idea.

Overal it was a really nice holiday, I would definitely recommend this hotel and all the trips we went on.
