Reviewed 20 May 2012

My wife and i have just returned from the Riu Yucatan. This is our second time here and we are so glad we returned. We had a great time at this hotel last year but we had a few issues with the quality of the all inclusive drinks at the bar. I am happy to say that there was no problem this time, in fact the whole hotel seems to have been tweaked a bit here and there and it really is all the better for it. Firstly DO NOT go to the Riu Yucatan expecting five star quality, the tour operators are doing this hotel no favours by classing it as five star because (in our opinion) it isnt and last year we were left a little disappointed. This is unfair on the hotel and staff because the Riu Yucatan is a great place for a holiday. This year having no five star expectations we had such a great time. The staff at the hotel are so friendly and will do anything to help you. The food is very good and there is something for everyone, you would have to be a very fussy eater not to enjoy the food here. The main plus point of this hotel is easily the beach IT IS BEAUTIFUL, plenty of sunbeds and room. Top tip though - DO NOT sit with sand on your feet as their are sand fleas. If you walk up the beach for about half a mile there is a fantastic secluded area. The second plus point is the grounds of the hotel, beautiful trees and shrubs that make you feel your in a jungle. There is lots of wlidlife also - Monkeys, Coatis, Iguanas, possums and lots more. The pool area is very clean and the swimming pools are lovely but too warm. The only negative point really is the evening entertainment , the micheal jackson act is a bloke miming to a cd, you will either love it or hate it. You will have a much better time if ,like us, you go into playa del carmen to 5th avenue and try out the bars ( i know its all inclusive at the hotel but seriously, at night 5th avenue is far better). We loved a little bar called Fiesta Siesta, great atmosphere and live bands but there are lots of other great bars and clubs. The rooms at the hotel are fine, sure they could do with a bit of updating but they have everything you need. Take mosquito repelant as we were bitten most days but this is the carribean its worth it. The shops on the hotel grounds are expensive but a short walk to the parade of shops just up the road will save you money, 5th avenue is even cheaper. Word of warning - there is a bird sanctuary on the way to playa del carmen we were charged 600 pesos, about £37 to enter and it took only 20 mins to walk round it !! Nice but way too expensive. To sum up - the Riu Yucatan is fantastic you will have a wonderful holiday if you dont go expecting five star. We cant wait to go again.

Amazing holiday. Enough said. If u need a more detailed review read a few of the positive ones below because they are all spot on. Booking Again for next year the riu yucatan got everything absolutely right. Also recommend flying Thomson premium class it is definitely worth the upgrade cost- plenty of leg room, good movie selection and the staff are bringing food and drink non stop.

My husband and I stayed at the Riu Yucatan from MAY 10 2012 - MAY 17 2012.

Here are the things we didn't like...
The snack bar, Margarita, was not the best, we ate most of our meals at the a la cartes or at La Hacienda (main restaurant). The beds were hard and very old, we got mattress toppers, helped a little bit, its a piece of foam that they lay down on the mattress and they ran out for our second double bed in the room so the maid just layered a bunch of blankets on that one. The resort was probably 90% smokers. We understand that the resort can not really control who comes to stay there, but perhaps making the resort a bit more non-smoker friendly would be an improvement. For example, designating some more areas that are smoke free might help. We found that in the theatre there was a smoke free area, but when we sat there, people would stand on the asile outside of the theatre which people use to get to the washrooms on either side of the stage to smoke and be closer to watch their friends making idiots of themselves on stage. So it wasn't really a smoke free zone.

Things to know... ask for a mattress topper, it helps. If you plan to get your scuba certification (which you can do for free at the resort) make sure you book it when you get there, you can not go scuba diving 24 hours before or after flying because of the pressure levels in your body, can cause a blood clot in your brain. There are 3 a la cartes, you can visit them as frequently as you wish, you just have to book it at breakfast between 7am-10am the day you wish to go, make sure that you check the itinerary they give you for the evening shows, on the dates it reflects intercontinental dinner, or mexican night. This tells you what the theme is in the main restaurant. So this way you can decide which nights you prefer to go elsewhere. I wouldn't suggest booking the mexican a la carte on Mexican theme night for example. There is no discotech on this resort, you just have to go across the street to RIU Tequilla. You have access to 4 of the RIUs and they are all pocketed together so you only have to walk next door or across the street to get to them.
They only serve one type of beer. They will only use the premium alcohol when you request it. If you wish to have a daquiri with bacardi rum, you have to ask for bacardi specifically but they have no problem giving it to you.

Overall this resort was very well worth the value and if you have booked a trip or are looking to book a trip to this resort, you can feel comfortable! You will enjoy it!

We would go back for sure!

Room Tip: Block 2 was very quiet and perfect distance to everything for us! I would suggest trying to avoid Bl...

Been back a week from a great holiday. Would recommend this hotel to anyone as long as you dont mind being one of the minorty groups. The majority during our stay were Canadians and South Americans but everyone seems to get on ok.

Hotel lovely as most Riu's are. Quick and pleasant check in with a very welcome cold refreshing drink after such a long flight. Cases arrived quickly to our rooms.

Room very clean and as with a lot of Rui's funiture very dark, but nothing wrong with it. Air conditioning worked very well and bed not as uncomfortable as some would have you believe

Meals were great, always found something nice to eat, (must try their roast pork) and too many desserts to pick from, but I would recomment the cheesecakes (say goodbye to the waistlne).

We spent first week round pool, never found any problems getting a sunbed. Second week we spent on beach, which was great and not far to come for food, drink and toilet.

Entertainment staff are non stop, not quite sure how they keep going. If they are not entertaining the guests they are practising for one of the shows. Seemed to be quite a few changes with the team while we were there, not sure why.

Waiters and bar staff do a brilliant job, never have to wait long for anything

Trips - we did two the one to Coba, which was a brilliant day,The ancient Mayan ruins and pyramid were great but the visit to the Mayan village and meeting some of the villagers was for me the highlight.
We had an excellent guide and the lunch i can honestly say was the best we have ever had on any day trip anywhere. The second was the Sian Ka'an truck safari, which is to a protected biosphere reserve .I think the rep could have been a little more informative with this one. Don't get me wrong it was a brilliant day. We saw wild dolphins, turtle and a manatee. These were seen from a boat which I didn't even know we had to get on (I don't travel well on boats and give them a wide berth) but before that, the road you travel along is 27 miles of the worse road you can imagine. When they take you to the meeting point for the truck, at a supermarket, you have to sign a disclaimer. They don't want you to go if you have a bad back or pregnant just to name a couple of things. But none of this was mentioned in the rep's talk.

We walked to Playa del Carmen one afternoon, not really recommended that time of day in the heat. Subsequently any future trips were done by taxi (70 pesos) each way. Well worth a trip in the evening. We had a very nice meal there, lots of places to choose from.

I have just a couple of complaints about the hotel. One, the furniture in the communial areas is really past its best and is now quite uncomfortable to sit on and secondly i think there should be a rule about people putting something on over their cossies at lunchtime, I really don't want to see big sweaty bodies on show while eating. Plus those chairs are then used in the evening for the steak restaurant. These are my only gripes.

Would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone. Preferred this resort to Cancun as its quieter and has a beautiful beach but the night life is there in Playa del Carman if you want it.

Wow Wow Wow......had an absolutely amazing time in The Yucatan!!!! My Partner, daughter (14yrs, so hard to please) and myself went for a two week holiday....From arriving at Birmingham Airport on the cold wet Thursday morning, to leaving Mexico Airport and the beautiful sunshine, we really couldn't fault it.
The Hotel...Great.
Rooms....Fab.
Food & Drink...Fab.
Pool Area...Brill
The Beach...well, what can l say, Paradise...Heaven....Beautiful, very clean, lots of sunbeds. The water is a beautiful turquoise col, so warm like stepping into a bath, stunning.
The Entertainment...This is where my 14yr old comes in to help..... She loved it....they were so hard working, from 9am in a morning till about 11pm at night they never stop, we loved the games by the pool, they were soooo funny!!!! Put 110% in at all times, always had a smile on there faces, if it was playing games, doing the entertainment at night, being asked to have pictures took with people, dancing, they always looked happy. My daughter loved them all (the boys) and they made her holiday. So a extra Big thank you to them.
All i all l would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: all rooms are fantastic

This is the 2nd time I have been to Mexico, previously stayed at the the catalonia riveria maya which was simply supberb compared to the riu yucatan. The only good thing is the location - the beach is lush and not too far to walk to playa del carmen.

Rooms:-
We were given a room on the ground floor - it was dark and dull and as soon as u walk in there is an awful musty smell, like the room had never been used for a long time.... the next morning, we found our clothes were stinking left in the cupboard and our hair and body would smell of the room. We asked for another room and we were given a room on the top floor - it was bright & had a nice balcony. However, the room was crawling with ants everywhere (we had assumed it was mexico and was normal for ants to be all over), they were in my make up bag, on our tooth brushes etc... We had left, a half drunk drink on the side of the bedside cabinet, only to find the next day it was covered with mites crawling all over the bedside cabinet and behind the bed. It was disgusting. Again, we went back to ask for a room change & the receptionist had said it was not normal to have ants crawling all over and so we moved again, only to find the air conditioning was not working. At this point we had enough, and was fed up of moving rooms so just left it. However, as a gesture of goodwill, we were given a complimentry voucher to go have dinner at the buffet in the riu palace - this hotel was out of this world.

Food:-
The food was repetitive, it was often recycled. For example, there would be turkey one evening and then the next day its there for brekfast and dinner ... There would be themed buffet nights. The chinese nights - they would call a galia melon 'a chinese melon' and the won ton soup would just be tomato soup with tagliatte pasta - made us laugh. We often skipped meals as we got fed up of eating the same things and everything was bland.

You have to be up before 7am to even get a chance to book one of the restaurants - there would already be a big queue waiting & most the times they would already be full. Only about a quarter of the restaurant capacity is used - we would often walk by and see plenty of tables not used. Beware of the mosquitos whilst dining at the steak house.

Entertainment:-
We tried to watch a couple of shows but felt like we were in Butlins.

Location:-
The beach and location was the only thing that the hotel had to offer. Beware of the slippery wet floors when it rains - such a danger and a death trap!

Overall, we found this hotel a disappoinment and would not recommend it to anyone
