I'm going to write this review little different. Just list the pros and cons, instead of paragraphs.

    Pros
    1. Location - one block away from 5th Ave & close to the beach.
    2. Atmosphere - its got this very serene / tranquil feel to it.
    3. Quiet pool - as there are no kids allowed, the pool area is quiet. Its smaller compared to some of the other big hotels. Its got really nice lounging beds.
    4. Breakfast - The breakfast included as part of the room was amazing!! You have tons of options to choose from. You can get a hot beverage & a juice. I custom ordered and they totally accomodated on mutiple days (Kudos to Santiago, Omar & all other friendly wait staff).
    5. Customer Service - The hotel staff were really helpful and friendly (Kudos to Carlos).
    6. Beach clubs - They can hook you up with discount at Mamitas & Zensi (we didn't use them).

    Cons:
    1. Next to Coco Bongo - if you are *very* light sleeper, then you might be better off in a different place (but everyplace near 5th ave will be slightly noisy). Didn't bother us, as we out past 2pm most nights.
    2. Smaller pool - pool is slightly smaller compared to some of the bigger hotels (not too uncommon in PDC though, unlike the other mega resorts on Riviera Maya).

Room Tip: Its all very similar as far as I can tell.

This is a great boutique hotel in Playa del Carmen; near enough to walk to all the action but with a peaceful pool area where you can laze the afternoon away in the sun. The rooms are really well-maintained, the beds are comfortable and our room had a balcony view over the pool. The fact that there are no children around also helps make the pool area so relaxing.
The hotel is only one block from the pedestrianized area where most of the bars and restaurants are to be found and, although we didn’t check them out, the hotel has access to two private beach clubs where you can spend the day if you wish. The food and drink in the bar/restaurant were great, the included breakfast was more than ample to keep you going until mid-afternoon and the staff was eager to help and advise whenever you needed them to.
We drove to Playa and the hotel offers discounted parking at a mall over the road. Be careful not to use the private car park opposite the hotel as it is more expensive. It is less than an hour to both Tulum and Cancún airport and, as we had a car, we drove to Akumal lagoon where there was great snorkelling without having to pay an expensive excursion price.
Overall, a great hotel; I didn’t see anything better in the centre of Playa del Carmen.

Room Tip: It's worth the extra few dollars to pay for a balcony overlooking the pool

Stayed at La Tortuga for 6 days in March, extending my stay there for two days and loved it. What set this hotel apart from others are the people and location. Just a block away from the action on 5th Avenue, once you get inside the hotel, the tranquility will make you feel like you are a mile away. With my room facing 10th Avenue, there was some noise from Coco Bongo a block away, but it never really bothered me. It was great to come back to the hotel and the calmness of the outdoor garden, pool, Jacuzzi and bar.

The staff were amazing from the very beginning, always helpful, always smiling and always remembering your name. They were more than willing to offer suggestions for restaurants and day trips, and keen to hear how your day went. Fidel and Morgana were awesome bartenders, pouring some amazing drinks – my favorite being the Margarita Diablo.

Rooms were a little small but more than adequate (very clean, air-conditioned and no shortage of hot water. The restaurant, El Bistro serves a great breakfast, and although I never ate dinner there, heard nothing but good things from other guests.

    Will definitely be back again.

I just returned from a 5 night stay at the wonderful La Tortuga. The staff is exceptional and so helpful for touring Playa del Carmen. This is teh 3rd time I have stayed at this hotel, and the first time where I noticed something very odd. One day we saw more than 5 armed police officers that looked very scary come into the hotel and start to demand information from the staff. I am not sure what happened but it was something that frieghtened me during my stay. I know security in Mexico can be an issue, but I have always thought of Playa and Hotel Tortuga as safe until now. The staff was unaware of what was going on, but the armed men did not seem appropriate. I hope this does not happen again, as many guests do not feel safe around armed police officers during their stay in a foreign country!
