“Excellent Food and Service at Gran Porto Real”
Reviewed 27 March 2012

My family had a fantastic week at this hotel. The staff were very friendly and extremely good at their jobs. The variety and quality of the food was excellent. I wish to especially compliment the staff at the "Pool Bar", including David, Hiram, Miguel, and Maria.

The beach and ocean are beautiful, and my family really enjoyed the atmosphere while shopping along 5th Avenue, which is very convenient to the hotel.

Congratulations to all staff at the Gran Porto Real, you're doing a fantastic job.

Overall we thought that the hotel was satisfactory and didnt live up to expectations that we assumed we would get according to other reviews on this site. The food is quite average, we both had chronic diarrhea for our whole stay (we were fine at all other motels in Mexico). The food bar on the beach serves buffet style food which sits in the sun for hours and im sure would be breading all sorts of bacteria. Room service was ok but they always bought warm milk with the cereal. The restaurants were ok but nothing special.
It is impossible to get a lounge chair by the pool, some people were booking them early in the morning and not sitting on them until late afternoon. It was the same on the beach but at least you could get a chair. The beach directly infront of the hotel is only anout 3 feet deep so it wasnt the best for swimming, you need to walk around the corner about 500 metres to the good beach for a swim.
The staff were quite nice and pleasant and tried to help as much as they could.
Our room was on the bottom floor and didnt get any sunlight. It smelt like mould and we found that the extra pillows and blankets were really musty and appeared they hadnt been cleaned for a long time. The ceiling had a bit of mould around the a/c.

Overall if were going back to Playa Del Carmen i wouldnt stay here, there are a lot of other options that looked better.

We stayed at the Gran Porto for 3 nights in March. The service was wonderful. The following staff members were outstanding: Pablo and Huber that served drinks at the pool, Filiberto at the Italian restaurant, and Laura at the concierge desk. Laura was so patient and helpful when we had issues with our checkout date. The location of the hotel is excellent in that it is very close to 5th Ave. Our kids, 6 and 8, loved every minute. The pool area is great for kids of all ages. They also have fun activities for all ages. I especially commend the pool area servers. They brought drink after drink with no complaints. They worked so hard and deserve recognition.

Room Tip: Our room was 309. It was a junior suite and faced the side road. You could see the ocean from the...

We just returned from a wonderful week in Playa del Carmen. This was our first time there and will most defiantly return.
The location of this resort is perfect.
Neither one of us have any complaints, about anything! Seriously...it was just that good!
The buffet has something for everyone, and if you can't find anything there, go to one of the fine restaurants that the hotel provides. If you are still not satisfied, you can either order room service, or tour around 5th Avenue.
The beach is really great. We met Alex at the swing bar, and had a great afternoon with him and the many other visitors. Alex truly put a smile on our faces no matter where he was stationed to work. Always attentive, and always smiling! Great job Alex.
At the pool bar, a special thanks to Montero (aka Mark Anthony) who taught us some Spanish, and learnt some English lol.
When we went to the beach to get some sun, we met one of the hardest workers on the resort...Pablo. Walking on the sand, all day, in the heat, catering to our every needs, this guy truly goes above and beyond the call of duty. Sometimes carrying two trays of drinks...great job to all of you.
Our room was 128, which was very quick access to everything. Only steps away from the 24 hour bar/food area, ice machine (very important), towel exchange, beach, massage hut, pool area, lobby bar, elevator...and yet, surprisingly very quiet at night. The bed and bedding was to die for, and with the ocean view room we also had a mini bar with rum, vodka, tequila, and scotch whiskey, and a small fridge with water, Pepsi, orange pop, 7-up and beer. Upon request, they brought us more of whatever we asked for. Our guy that stocked our room even found us a liter of tomato juice (so sorry we forgot his name). Claudia also did a fine job of cleaning our room and leaving beautiful towel art every day. It is important to hang the sign outside your room door to get faster service with the room cleaning. We figured this out after a few days. I was a little unsure of how I would like the main floor room, but it was perfect for us. I wouldn't want to change a thing.
You never have to worry about seating on the beach, as there are tonnes of loungers. Some with cushions and some without. We liked the cushions. The small tables are an added bonus, but there are not very many of those.
If you prefer to sit by the pool, you will have to get up pretty early to snag a great seat. All the activities are awesome. Thanks Chicken for a great time at the pool!!!
All Staff members were truly great at whatever they were doing, from the gardener watering the plants to the staff that shone up the garbage cans (yes...daily...impressive), to the guy on the beach that picked up all the straws and cigarette butts, to the front desk staff...I could go on and on.
This is truly a wonderful place to stay. We enjoyed it and will return, and we hope you enjoy it too.

Room Tip: 128 has a great partial view of the ocean. Street front, yet quiet. Quick access to everything the r...

First visit to Gran Porto March 14 - 21. Exceptional service by Concierge Laura Cruz Saldana and Best Day Tours on time and professional for our transfers. Appreciated the 4th floor room for the mobility issues of our mother. Rooming staff were trustworthy and efficient and very talented with the creative towel figures!!
Beautiful resort, good choice of food and nice that we did not have to make reservations at the Mexican and Italian restaurants. Fun activities at the pool. Plus: great bar service around the pool especially bar staff Miguel, Filberto and Avilia and Jose. The Beach guacamole and pico de gallo station was delicious! Con: How the pool lounge chairs and umbrellas were allocated. We were up at 6 am and yet there were towels draped on chairs even though the towel station was not open until 7 am. Also many chairs would not be used for hours. We would like to see that at least one or two people from the party remain with their lounge chairs or they are open game.
Entertainment was good, love the Cirque theme.
We remained around the pool as the beach close to the water had some rocks so would recommend water shoes.
Great location close to the beach yet walking distance to 5th Ave shopping.
Great assistance from the Tour reps we were able to check off bucket list for Dolphin tour and fabulous Tulum Extreme tour.
8 family members - extraordinary holiday ! Will definitely return to Playa Del Carmen and next time will save my $$ to stay in the suite with walk out to the beach lovely!!!

Room Tip: 4th floor great for mobility issues as 5th floor you climb stairs at least on side by pool.
