“Perfect mix of beach and city”
Reviewed 24 February 2012

This is the second time I've vacationed at this resort. The location is excellent if you are looking for a mix of all-inclusive beach vacation and a bit of city fun in Playa del Carmen. The place is immaculately clean and the food is above average compared to other 5 star resorts. The rooms and some common areas need to be refreshed and it seems as if they are renovating room by room.

It is only a 30 minute walk through the gated Playacar community to the centre of Playa del Carmen with great restaurants and night life. It's only a 30 minute walk along the beach to the public beaches in Playa del Carmen which are great for people watching.

I will definitely return and would recommend this resort to family and friends.

There's very little to add to previous reviews but I think it's important to mention that whilst we were worried by the weather forecasts before we went, forecasting rain and storms, we didn't see one drop of rain just lots of sunshine.

We stayed here from 2nd February to 16th February for my 50th Birthday.
We booked with Thomson holidays in the travel agents and got the internet price. To upgrade the room to a fountain view room Thomson wanted £54 per room per night, however if you email the hotel beforehand they will upgrade for 60USDollars ( £40 ) per night. We had a top floor outside facing room and were happy with this ( saved £540 for trips )
Our first trip to Mexico and we loved it
Fabulous hotel, food, cocktails, rooms, beach, poolside and waiter service, I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to my best friends ! I shall certainly be visiting other Riu Palace Hotels in other countries.
The staff decorated our room for my birthday and sang Happy Birthday to me in the Krystal Restaurant ! The hotel also celebrated Valentines Day by giving all the women a red rose, which was a nice touch.
In my opinion, the other Rius in the area were not as good, Diluted drinks and more noisy.
Walked into Playa Del Carmen, 5th Avenue, a few times, a casual 30 minute walk either along the roadside or along the beach, ( believe me you do need to exercise to prevent weight increase) A taxi cost 70 Mex Pesos,
Booked day trip to Chitzen Itza, with Thomsons, probably more expensive but well worth it, as had an excellent guide.
Did "Trainer for the day", swam with dolphins, had approx 3 hrs in the water swimmimg with dolphins/manatees/stingrays/sharks. It was a great experience for my Birthday treat,
We took the local bus from 5th Avenue to Tulum to visit the Mayan Ruins and beach and saved money compared to an organised trip. You could also travel up to Cancun for the day and use the Riu hotels for meals and drinks.
The trip to Si'an nature Reserve was good to see dolphins and turtles in natural surroundings
and for snorkling.
To sum up, yes I would go back to Mexico and to the Riu Palace Hotel however there are so many other places to see in the world.

Room Tip: Email the hotel beforehand,

Visited first week in February 2012. Only one day of rain (staff switched gears to find things to do!). We have visited Rie Palace in Costa Rica, and one in Cancun. This is very best beach! Lovely Palms, ots of chairs fro beach and pools.Exceptional staff and food. Took eco tour and into city twice. No concerns for security.

Only two elevators and they go through service areas at the gorund level where food service and beach are located. So, if knees are a prroblem a ground level room would be best! 1st floor is lobby level and will require stairs.

We stayed at the Riu Palace Mexico in May 2011 for my wife's 30th birthday. We consider ourselves 'seasoned' Riu guests.. this is the 3rd different property we have visited in the past three years, all in Mexico.

As we expected, the property is clean and in great condition, the food and entertainment is fun, and the staff is very very friendly! Our only minor gripe would be the check-in process... we arrived around 12pm the day of check-in and were greeted by the front-desk staff. They informed us that our rooms would not be available until 3pm. No worries, the restaurant, beach, pool and all other facailties were open and ready to be used. We were told our bags would be brought to our rooms when they were ready. Well come to our surprise 4 hours later, the bags were still in the lobby and it seems like they were completely forgotten. No worries though, it's vacation right!

Anyone who has visited a Riu Palace property will knows what to expect and can be reassured about the quality of the food and staff. Everyone goes out of their way to make you comfortable... awesome!

We visited the Spa during our trip for a massage... Yes services seem pricey, but $20-30 for mani or peti and up is about normal for any resort. Once again the staff was very gracious and did a great job.

Last but certainly not least is the beach. This Riu is situated on a very large piece of property and no kidding the beach is HUGE! The water is probably at least 200 yards from the edge of the resort which is awesome. The sand is clean and the water is crystal clear and warm. The resort provides plenty of lounge chairs and there is a large group of palm trees between the pool and the sand that provides lots of shade. The resort was fairly full when we were there and we did not have much trouble at all finding a shady spot (this can't always be said about other resorts we've been to in the past). There are bartenders continually circulating amongst the lounge chairs with drinks of all sorts (water, mojitos, pina colladas, and more)!

To conclude, we had a great vacation and eagerly look forward to our next trip to a Riu. As the tag-line says... "I want, I want to go to Riu.. I want, I want to go to Riu!"

Lovely accommodations and friendly staff that could not do enough to please. Nice selection of food on the buffet and at the restaurants. Great beach access and the on-site pool was quite nice. There was different entertainment each evening and lots of activities. Musty odor in the rooms due to the heat & humidity and expect to pay extra for in-room WIFI (although it's free if you use your laptop in the lobby).

Room Tip: Garden view rooms facing East get the prevailing breeze and avoid the heat of the afternoon sun.

We stayed here from Feb 11th til Feb 17th 2012. Without re-writing too much of the previous reviews maybe we can at least validate some or debunk others.

Safety- Extremely safe, like a gated community inside another gated community.

Hotel Staff- They are the most friendly and approachable we have met.
This is our 13th time to Mexico, so that is saying something.

Food- We are not much for "scheduling our dinner" so we bypassed the specialty restaurants. However we did take full advantage of the nightly dinner buffet and just to give you a quick idea, on one plate I had Roasted duck, pork loin hand carved or course, 6 different types of sushi and I think there were at least 10. Ahi tuna, peel and eat shrimp about the size of roll of nickles. This was all on an average night. The food during the day was hit and miss. You could eat at the Tequila or the Yucatan for breakfast or lunch, but not dinner, however we had friends at the Tequila and got permission to have dinner with them there. It was good, but not nearly as good as the Palace.

Rooms- We had room 2127 and thought it was pretty nice
Beach- There is a lot of it. It is very nice and yes you do have to get up and stake your claim if you have a particular spot in mind, but you will find a spot if not.

Drinks- It is what it is. Never the same from one day to another or one bar to another bar, ya just gotta put in a bit of trial and error to find your favorite.

Grounds- Beautiful, will be interesting to see how it is remodeled. The Yucatan and Tequila are older and in much more need of the remodel.

Would we go back? That one is tough. Would have to see how the remodel goes, and the packages that are offered.

Room Tip: The higher the better, but there are NO Ocean views.
