The Reef Coco Beach
Ranked #102 of 213 Hotels in Playa del Carmen
Reviewed 28 April 2012

Ok, So after 7 years we decide we should go on vacation.

I book it at the Grand Coco Bay Resort in Playa Del Carmen. I book a Beach Front Room aside from the 50.00 differance in the per night charge this room is to have one king size bed, and a walk out balcony to the beach.

We arrive at the resort to be told "Our Room is not ready" however we will receive a free upgrade for our trobles to the "best room at the hotel" a suite no less. However it is not Ocean front it is ocean view a 3rd floor room. As we have several excursions planned for the first few days we will spend little time in the room so we agree. We are assigned 2366 a GREAT ROOM the next day we are off to Cozumel for an overnighter, then Xcarat the next day. When we get back we have been moved again to 2301 a HORRIBLE room. Located above the restaurant and the old grease containers, and garbage the smell when you open the door is enough to make you wretch. To make matters worse if you open the balcony door there are so many bugs it is impossible to even explain. Also this room is Ocean View again not Ocean front as we paid for. We go to the desk to ask to be moved again. We are told very nicely that this is the room we paid for, after some convincing the desk clerk relents and agrees to move us but not until the next day. We are then moved to 2166 finally an Ocean Front Room however with 2 twin beds at this point we have not unpacked and been all over the hotel so we don't complain. The room is nice and clean and we have a great LAST DAY of our vacation. Thats right folks on the last day we finally get the room we paid for, well sort of. Moving around really messed up our mojo and kinda put a kink in our vacation.

All this aside I must say the staff at the hotel are exceptional, very friendly and helpful even in bad situations. Victor the belman was very helpful and as you might guess we got to know him due to our many moves around the property. They keep up the resort, scrub things, security is good, food is very good, drinks were good and everyone was friendly with the exception of the dive shop guy. You get one hour free snorkel rental, and if you don't book a tour with him he is kinda cranky.

Anyway all this aside we would return to this resort however I would insist I get the room I paid for up front. Did not want the suite although it was nice I never used it.

Room Tip: Stay on the even side of the resort if you have an odd room get a higher number stay away from the o...

We had a great time at the GRAND Coco bay. We had a late arrival to the hotel. The staff rushed out, expecting us. We were told that they were wondering where we were! "Hello Family! Welcome home!".. Does not get any better than that. A glass of Champagne and a beach front upgrade for the evening and we were set.
We wanted two rooms next to each other as the kids had thier own room. We were two rooms apart with the promise of fixing this the following day.
Having the ground floor Ocean front rooms, we were staying put! How nice to be able to be on the beach from your Balcony!

The staff were very friendly. We Loved Omar and Miguel on the buffett. Victor at the front was great. He told us he was sad when we were leaving. :)
All in all a great little resort. If you are looking for a nig resort, this is not the place for you. If you want small, personalized service, a great view, close to 5th ave with good food and a good pool this is the place for you!

A few tidbits:
Oceanfront rooms: Yes you get a black wrist band WHEN YOU PAY for the upgrade. Honestly I am not sure I would pay the extra a second time. You do "get a cabanna".. But what you REALLY get is the use of one FREE of charge. You DO have to line up at the front desk every morning to "book one".. We never did get the one right out front of our room. Really silly, and honestly I think It is something that NEEDS to change. I was irritated by that.
Also the ground floor rooms did not have the nice chairs on the balcony, they had the hard plastic ones. I don't understand why.

Being that this is an older resort there are not enough plugs in the room. We had an alarm clock in the room, but there were only 2 plugs. One for the TV and 1 for the mini fridge. We had to charge stuff in the bathroom.

The WiFi is not free. Would be nice with the upgraded rooms that it was included.

Food was good. One of the better snack bars I've seen at an AI. Nice that the buffett was different theme every night. Gave you a lot of variety without going to different places. We did try the Italian. It was nice to do "upscale" without having to pay for it.

Yes, there are some beat up lounge chairs that need to be replaced, but there were plenty of them around the beach and the pool to choose from at all times of the day.

The grounds are always being cleaned & swept. You feel very safe with the security gaurds on site.

Go for a walk, enjoy the massage up the beach.. The Ocean is soo beautiful I was in it by 8:30 some mornings!

Say "Hola" to the staff there from us!
I would not trade the beachfront AI resort with the proximity to 5th ave for a bigger resort.
I can see us going back here again!

Room Tip: Avoid room 2165 if it is offered to you. It is next to the public beach club. On Saturday evenings t...

Before leaving for our vacation I looked at reviews. I was a little nervous about reviews. When my husband and I arrived all my worries went away! The resort was beautiful! We have stayed at Sandles in Ocho Rios and the food was WAY better at Coco Bay!!!! The staff was AMAZING!!!! Yes there were boats anchored in water at resort HOWEVER the beach does not end at Coco Bay!!!! On both sides of resort is all site of the ocean! Also to the right of resort on the beach is Azul Massage. You can get a 1 hour massage for $25 and it was the best massage I ever had! The only negative thing I could say about resort is that they don't have a ATM nor do they accept credit cards in gift shop or if you purchase photos.
All in all my husband and I are already planning a trip back to Coco Bay next year.

I am still trying to figure out where the negative reviews come from. We traveled with a party of Six. Overall Accommodations plenty of room and very clean. Food would have liked more choices for Table dining but we chose to stay at a smaller resort therefore less choices. Food was great the Chefs were fantastic and went to great lengths to appease even the pickiest diners. Food though limited was great. The resort staff very efficient and friendly. By far the Best was the entertainment Staff ( Carlos and Giselle ) . You have to go to COCO BONGO do not let the Price of the VIP Service Scare you, well worth it for a Fantastic eve. A little bit into the wee hours, but your on VACATION. Would recommend and definitively return and enjoy another vacation at this resort.

We were at GCB last January. Our 12th trip to the area, 3rd to Playa Del Carmen.
This resort is great for its category - it is a 3.5 star, and doesn't claim to be a 5 star, so certain expectations that some reviewers do not find are unreasonable, especially for the price.
The Pros are far outnumber the Cons at Grand Coco Bay, even compared to many 5*.
Lobby is not grand, it is small but very comfortable and very clean, with nice bar area, plenty of seating and internet. 15 minute walk, or 3 minute, $4 cab ride to Fifth Avenue.
Buildings are dated and simple, but in a good, clean shape.
Rooms are smaller but very clean, have balconies, got everything we need, easy quick access to pool, beach and restaurants. We don't find having a huge room on a vacation a huge asset - convenience of access to amenities is far more important for us. We are there to sleep, wash and change, that's all.
For a 3.5 star buffet, food quality is excellent. Beats most 5* megaresorts. The views from the buffet restaurant beats most resorts - you are literally by the sand. Snack bar at the pool is a hit with our kids, sandwiches are outstanding - they have a variety, just ask. The 2 restaurants are very good, the service and quality. So they don't have 12 restaurants, but it is a small resort and service is more personal.
Beach area is narrow, but very clean and swimming is outstanding due to calm water and moderate depth. There are boats by the beach, they are at least few hundred feet away and no bother to us. This beach has the clearest water in Playa.
Pool is clean and nice. We didn’t spend anytime there – we prefer beach – but others were enjoying it and swim-up bar was popular.
One major con – the loungers need to be replaced or repaired. For the most part, they are filthy and falling apart. If management is reading this, please take note – many folks complain about it.
Overall, it is a great smaller resort with a lot to offer. If you are looking for a huge 5* where all you do is walk from place to place, this may be a disappointment. We will definitely be back

Room Tip: If you need adjoining access rooms, ask when checking in - they have them and will accomodate. Lobby...

WE Vacationed APRIL 10-17 2012. WE LOVED IT.
after reading reviews before we left i was very curious and a little scared. BUT after going i've determined that some people you just can't make happy OR they have very bad luck!!
Check IN WAS A BREEZE, BARTENDERS AND SERVERS WERE ALL GREAT!! GABRIELLA WAS OUR FAVORITE...SHE WORKED BREAKFAST and lunch. the maid and room service were good. EVERYTHING WAS JUST PLAIN EASY...WHAT A VACATION SHOULD BE...RELAXING!!!!

IF i had to pick something that needs improving it would be the water pressure IN THE SHOWER. My traveling companions found THE BEDS TO BE TOO HARD...i liked the beds.

My personal highlight of the week was holding a monkey!!!
Everyday at the hotel there's a different animal you can hold and be photographed with. PARROTS, IGUANAS, TOUCAN, MONKEY....AWESOME!

Room Tip: OUR ROOM WAS #2438. IT WAS GREAT!! king bed, good ac, 4th floor, ocean view by chance

My wife and I just vacationed here with 4 other couples, all in their late 20's and early 30's. We've all done our share of all-inclusive resorts; sandals, dreams, riu. This resort was really lacking in many areas. Our king size room reminded me of a broom closet. The bed was extremely hard and the pillows were unbearable. The shower had almost no water pressure and the water was luke warm at best. The television never worked properly and the remote control which the front desk checks out to you never worked!

Workout facility is really lacking. Old weights and no treadmills. Only cardio equipment is an old bike. Bring headphones and a cross-fit workout.

The resort only has 2 reservation restaurants. Both had decent meals/desserts.

The resort is the furthest away from 5th Ave. so a taxi ride is 5 - 6 bucks. We walked to town on the street and the beach and never had a problem.

Definately pay the money and go to the CoCo Bongo show! Worth every penny!!!! You can book with a rep at the resort by the pool.
