Owner description: Tulum (Spanish pronunciation: [tu'lum], Yucatec: Tulu'um) is the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city serving as a major port for Coba.[1] The ruins are situated on 12-meter (39 ft) tall cliffs, along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.[1] Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. Old World diseases brought by the Spanish settlers appear to have resulted in very high fatalities, disrupting the society and eventually causing the city to be abandoned.[citation needed] One of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites, Tulum is today a popular site for tourists.[1]

We took an organized tour planned by our Delta rep at a reasonable price at the last minute and we were glad we did.
The ruins were not as huge as I had anticipated but spectacular to see. I highly recommend taking a tour or hiring a guide because the information provided certainly provided an insight researching will not. The tour itself was only about an hour and a half with free time at the end to continue exploring or shop in the entrance plaza. After spending time on 5th avenue we were not in the mood for the constant beckoning to visit each shop so we advised our bus driver we would not be returning to our resort and ventured off on our own. Took a cab to a beach area and wandered for the rest of the afternoon enjoying the slower pace the beach area provided.

Tulum ruins make a great day trip if you are spending your holiday on a nearby beach. If you are traveling through the peninsula, however, you will see countless sites way more interesting. Tulum has its location on the beach to make up for its lack of grandeur. Nice photo op.

if you want to see the ruins without thousands of all inclusive hotel holiday makers GET THERE EARLY! They arrive in droves at around 9.30 and the place becomes a mob fest.

We got there just after 8am and had the place to ourselves. Great walk around the ruins overlooking the stunning turquoise sea & beaches. Worth the visit
