Oasis with Ocean view

Review of Mixtli Ecohouse
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed May 2, 2024
Mixtli Eco-lodge is an oasis on a hill, close to the beach. The room, Estrella, is cozy, peaceful, and tranquil with an amazing ocean view. If you're looking for a getaway to connect with yourself, yet still be close to attraction sites, this is the place to be!

We spent 11 lovely nights and were very comfortable overall. We stayed in Casita for the majority of the trip, but extended for a few more nights in Sol and Luna rooms as well. First, guests need to understand that this is an ecolodge, not a hotel or resort. Perfect for a low frills affordable accommodation just a couple of minutes walk from the beach. I feel like other reviewers were expecting something more luxurious. Fresh drinking water is always available and the cold shower is all we wanted after a day in the sun. Casita is quaint and spacious with a private kitchenette and balcony. Sol and Luna are up the hill on the next level and have private bathrooms with a shared kitchen space. These rooms are smaller with an unconventional design, but we enjoy quirky. The shared balcony offers a great ocean view with lovely sunrises and sunsets. Access to town was just a short walk and colectivos are a cheap way to explore other places on the coast. Plenty of great restaurants are close by. We felt that the value was great and would definitely stay again.

Room tip: Parking is tight, on street, but safe. The walkway to the property is lit, but somewhat steep, not ideal for anyone who might have difficulty walking up a hill.

Ok so I know it’s México and I know that there are a broad range of accommodations in this country that range from budget to luxury, I’ve stayed in all manner of hotels over the years and have a pretty basic set of mandatory items, this “hotel” is pretty rough…..
You need to Trek up the side of a hill on a very poorly maintained pathway that is in a state of absolute decay and poorly lit, ensure you have a flashlight handy and if you have any mobility issues, forget about it. You have to huff your luggage and groceries etc. up this hill to access the rooms that are staggered up the hillside.
We were met with a basic “there’s your room, enjoy” when we arrived and a small padlock unlocked the door to the room. The door is a rickety affair that provides zero security and could be pushed down easily.
Yikes.
Our room was built directly onto the rock which in itself was kind of neat but made it very cumbersome for access/mobility. In order to access the “bathroom” you had to go up 3 carved stairs and then down 4 more. This is around the bed which is made of cut up 4x4 posts and misc. lumber.
The bathroom was carved out of the rock, again cool in theory but the toilet lid wouldn’t close, the sink and shower were just a valve on a pipe and no hot water.
The entire suite is open along the top to whatever, no screens, so there was an unsavory blend of insects the room. Which is why a full bed insect screen is provided.
No seating, no table, no where to put luggage etc. and the way the bed is oriented you can’t put anything on it or sit on it either, you kind of have to crawl into it.
The bed and pillows were painful to sleep on, and as the bathroom is dangerous to access in the dark you must turn the lights on to safely navigate, waking your partner in the process.
The communal kitchen area was directly outside our door and our neighbor’s were doing their best to keep quite but it’s too open and you can hear everything.
There is a place for this type of lodging, backpackers and students could do it, but this should be $25-50 a night max. We left after one night and went down the street to enjoy comfy beds and AC,

Hard pass!
