Pha Kuang Cave is about 3 km from Nong Khiaw downtown. The cave is right next to the main road between Mandala Ou resort and Pak Bak village. It was originally used as a hideout during the Indochina war in 1960s and you can see some war remnants. Visiting this cave is fun and an unexpected adventure as along the trail to big halls inside, you have to pass small holes and climb around tunnels that almost fit to your body. Inside the cave there are interesting limestone stalactites and stalagmites shaped like curtain, pillar, witch face, etc.
I like how the cave is well maintenance but without any fancy lightbulb or staircase. So, you will have to figure out your own footsteps while exploring the cave but that is still manageable. There is an entrance fee of 10,000 kips with a flashlight you can borrow from an opposite restaurant of the cave owner. Highly recommended for people at a good fitness level!
