My husband and I loved this trip. Boating up the Nam Ou from Non Khiaw to Mong Noi we passed water buffalo, farming and weaving villages, and beautiful mountains and jungle. We visited several villages along the way and trekked through rice fields and teak forests to a remote village high in the mountains for a homestay. We also visited a cave one village had used as a bomb shelter. We chose to kayak back to Nong Khiaw, which was another great way to experience the river. The scenery is stunning and the encounters with the local people and culture memorable. The food provided for our lunches was exceptional--all prepared at the local Green Discovery office. Our guide, Joi, was one of my favorite guides we experienced during our month-long Southeast Asia trip. Joi was attentive without being intrusive, thoughtful, reflective, gentle, good-natured, always ready with quiet humor and a beautiful smile, full of knowledge about northern Laos--its jungles and its peoples--and just a lovely, lovely person/spirit to be around at all times. You could tell he had great respect and love for the landscape and people.

We took the 3 day kayaking trip from Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang. Considering it's a 3 day trip, with food, accommodation and water included we thought it was pretty good value.

Our guide, Leah was excellent - he was very patient with us as inexperienced kayakers, he was knowledgable and did a great job with the cooking and entertaining us during the evening. He even made us some improvised cocktails, with a plastic bag as a cocktail shaker. We were impressed with his ability to improvise, for example when we lost our paddle and therefore couldn't make it to the designated village in time, which meant he had to arrange something in another village.

I will point out to people that Green Discovery have had to completely change this trip due to the Chinese constructing a dam on the Nam Ou near Nong Khiaw. As a result, the trip now travels on the Seng and Xeung rivers. This means that the trip is now more kayak focused rather than sightseeing combined with kayaking. For example, the rapids are a slightly higher grade than the original advertised trip and the trip now doesn't stop at any of the sights such as the Pak Ou caves. We weren't aware of this until we had already started the trip. Green Discovery explained that they have requested the website be changed with the new trip details but it takes some time. They were very apologetic and dealt with the situation very professionally. But if you have already booked the trip or are planning to, just be aware of these changes and check it's the trip you want.

Serious agency with very expensive services. We booked a tour for 2 days/ 1 night trekking with homestay, and it was a great experience.
We had a guide named Leah (called him 'Leo' the entire trek though) : very nice and careful of his clients, very interesting and great cook ! Thank you again for these two wonderful days ;-)
Careful though, it is the rainy season so the walk can be a bit slippery.

To see the Nam Ou, hills, cave and villages go on a day tour with Green Discovery. Easy boat drive up the river, followed by an hour hike to this amazing waterfall where you can have a swim (watch the leeches as it's rainy season).
Hike back to have a picnic lunch on a river bank and drift/kayak back enjoying the surroundings without roaring engines.

Staff @ the Green Discovery is super friendly and helpful to customize the trip and adjust it according to your level of fitness. The more people join the cheaper it gets.....

We (family with 3 teenage boys) went on the 3 day kayak trip from Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang. This is a great trip through spectacular scenery. Stayed in the local villages who looked after us very well. Food was great. The guides looked after us very well.
The first day of the trip is very very hard. It is 30km of paddling on flat water. It is very hot & you need max sun protection. Day 2 and 3 are really enjoyable. Enjoy it while you can because with another dam being built they will not run the tour for much longer
