We saw lots of pilot whales! They had started moving south a few days before we came and the captain (not actually Mark on the day we went but his son was on the boat) knew where to go to find them. An added bonus of trips with Capt. Mark is that marine science graduate students from Dalhousie University in Halifax accompany each trip in July and August. They are very knowledgeable about whales and are happy to share their knowledge - plus they are young and very enthusiastic about their subjects so it is delightful to listen to them. One of the most interesting things that happened was when the captain put a microphone over the side so that we could listen to the different calls and sounds that the whales made. Be sure to call ahead to confirm that your scheduled tour is going out. Several had to be cancelled the 5 days we were in Cape Breton because of high winds. We were lucky that our trip was pre-booked (also a good idea) on a day that ended up having mild winds. As an aside, this was our fourth boat trip while in Nova Scotia and the Double Hookup had the nicest head - if that is something that is important to you while out on the water for a couple of hours, :-).
