Ron drove the Zodiak and we got to experience the best whale watching ever. They were in pods 3 and 4 feet away from the boat. I got some amazing videos. Would highly recommend.

We were traveling as a group of 4 around the Cabot Trail and stayed the night in Pleasant Bay to get on the early Whale Watching tour with Captain Mark! Upon arriving at Pleasant Bay a day early, we drove around and saw that all of the whale watching tours had been cancelled for the day due to high winds. Captain Mark saw us parked out front and came by to ask if we had booked a tour. We told him that we had booked for tomorrow morning and he explained that our tour would likely be cancelled, due to weather. After calling around, we were able to book a different tour with a company on the other side of the trail (apparently the wind is not as bad there). Before officially booking with this 2nd company, we went back to talk to Capt. Mark to make sure that we could cancel without penalty. Unfortunately, he had left for the day however, someone at the Whale Center called his personal number so we could chat with him. He was so friendly and, although he was disappointed we couldn't go out with him, he told us he wanted us to have a good time and allowed us to cancel without penalty and book with this second group. Although we did not actually end up going out with Captain Mark, I was so impressed by his customer service. He really cared about making our trip a memorable one! I would highly recommend booking with his company!

These guys were great, Mark's son Ben was our guide and told us about the different types of whales native to the area. They also had marine science students (3) on the boat to document the sightings who were also extremely informative. We saw some seals on our way out and then wound up seeing dozens of pilot whales including a family with a baby. Perfect way to spend the morning. The total ride was about 2.5 hours and I do recommend bringing a windbreaker or a warm jacket even if it's a warm day out because it's quite cool out on the water.

My family really enjoyed our Zodiak whale tour. It was an extremely foggy day but the captain worked hard to find whales. He was very personable and knowledgeable about sea life. We ended up following a single Minke whale for quite some time and got some good pictures.

We saw lots of pilot whales! They had started moving south a few days before we came and the captain (not actually Mark on the day we went but his son was on the boat) knew where to go to find them. An added bonus of trips with Capt. Mark is that marine science graduate students from Dalhousie University in Halifax accompany each trip in July and August. They are very knowledgeable about whales and are happy to share their knowledge - plus they are young and very enthusiastic about their subjects so it is delightful to listen to them. One of the most interesting things that happened was when the captain put a microphone over the side so that we could listen to the different calls and sounds that the whales made. Be sure to call ahead to confirm that your scheduled tour is going out. Several had to be cancelled the 5 days we were in Cape Breton because of high winds. We were lucky that our trip was pre-booked (also a good idea) on a day that ended up having mild winds. As an aside, this was our fourth boat trip while in Nova Scotia and the Double Hookup had the nicest head - if that is something that is important to you while out on the water for a couple of hours, :-).
