Fabulous way to spend a few hours, and value for money. Lots of owls to see, some a bit more... read more
The owl centre has been built in an old walled garden so some of the birds have a backdrop of mellow brick in their aviaries. There is a wide variety of species and a (unique?) wet and humid 'rainforest realm' where tropical owls live in what would be their natural conditions in the wild. Very impressed by the spaciousness and cleanliness of the aviaries, plus the knowledge and friendliness of the keepers.
Seeing the birds fly is a treat and we loved the story of Sarabi - the 17-year-old milky eagle owl who had been shunted from one owner to another because a fear of pushchairs (or anything on wheels) prevented her from performing in public. A few months of sympathetic handling at the SOC and she's the star of the show - and beautiful as well.
The indoor flying arena means that the staff are able to put on flying displays whatever the weather. Other places we've been to, where displays are in the open, would have to cancel in bad weather.
Good food - light lunches, cakes, coffee, etc - is available in the courtyard outside the owl centre.
A great day out
Very interesting to see the birds fly
An amazing number of owls large and small, the staff and owners are very friendly and informative
What a hoot! We had a great day, amazing number of owls, from tiny to the largest in the world, the staff and owners are very friendly and informative. The whole experience is very well done, superb displays of the owls flying with lots of very interesting I for action. The education boards are well done being interactive, informative and enjoyable, this is a great place to visit no matter what aw your kids or you are at. It would also make a superb school trip with the park next door in addition. Great place for an afternoon out with a great cafe beside to round off the trip. Well done to the owners and keepers, check out the blog. We got to meet a baby snowy owl who was so cute and funny with his head bobbing around , I wonder if he will be flying in the next few weeks. Go and check it out.

I really enjoyed my day at the Owl Centre. Got to see many different species. Learned a lot of fun facts during the show and seeing the owls fly just two steps away from you is an amazing experience. Even got to see a 4 week old owlet (cutest thing ever!). I highly recommend it for a nice and fun day out.
