Reviewed 8 April 2012

We just came back from EDSS and we can truly say that was an amazing experience
We had chosen EDSS mainly based on the reviews and it did not disappoint
The location cannot be better although some people can say it is too isolated, but that was exactly what we were looking for
The staff was excellent, and working in the industry we can only say well done Enrique for keeping them motivated at all the time. All of them are very helpful and friendly
It was very pleasant to wake up early knowing Fernando and Encarnacion were about to serve you a magnificent breakfast at Vida
And what can we say about those drinks waiting for us at Hidden Beach after our daily exercise, thanks again Esperanza.
We visited all the restaurants and the food and service is consistently good. The fact that they are A la Carte is a bonus, and avoid the unnecessary “stress” of the buffet restaurants of other resorts.
As other reviewers have mentioned the beach is not the best (very rocky) but they are trying their best to maintain it with staff constantly working on it.
There are always beach beds available, and although the resort was fully booked during our stay, you are not under the impression of a crowded place. The clever hotel layout allows spreading the guests in different locations.
We are not very much into night resorts entertainment, but EDSS’s are classy, with real quality live performances.
We were lucky enough to try the Spa in our last day. What a location...! We enjoyed the golden suite, very recommendable for couples who want to have their treatment together (we prefer this rather than the beach beds), as the atmosphere is magical. The Spa was not 100% finished, as the hydrotherapy and Temazcal Maya will be up and running shortly with the latter promising to be the real feature of the whole resort.
It was the perfect way so say bye-bye to a place we know for sure we will return soon.

Room Tip: No point to upgrade to a sea front suite as the trees block the views

We loved this hotel. I'd booked it for our 10th anniversary after doing a lot of research on the web. We chose this because it was smaller, more intimate than the big resorts and adult only. On arrival we had a glass of sparkly and there was also a bottle in our room in an ice bucket.
ROOM - The rooms were lovely, clean and spacious. I was a bit worried when we were allocated room 2515 due to its proximity to the main bar. However, I needn't have worried. Once the air con was on you couldn't hear a thing, except the birds in the morning, although you soon got used to those. We upgraded to a sea view and we had a view through the trees of the beach. It also meant we were on an upper floor which I prefer. The towel art was second to none. BEACH - The beach was lovely, although the water was quite shallow, but it was so nice to have the fish swimming through your legs so close to shore. We were glad of our water shoes, as it could be a bit sharp in places. We spent most of our time by the main pool where we never had any trouble getting a shady bed at any time of day. Although this was the activity pool it was fairly quiet. The animation team did try and get you involved and were great to chat to, but they didn't bother you if you just wanted to laze around. FOOD - The food was to die for. If you want a buffet, do not come here. All the food was so beautifully presented, the service was excellent, all the staff were brilliant. We never had to wait long for a table. Our favourite restaurants were La Carreta and Arrecifes. The sandwicherie or the barbecue at lunch made a nice change from the gourmet food in the evening. We always tipped a daily 20 pesos to the cleaner, the bar staff, the lady who brought the drinks to the pool and the serving staff at each meal which went down well, although you received the same service whether you tipped or not. This hotel was all geared up for romance and couples. It is not a place to come with a gang. The clientele are mainly Canadians and Brits with a few Americans. SECURITY - One morning we had accidentally left our safe open containing purse, wallet, passports, camera, mobile phone, jewellery, etc. On return to the room we found a note which said that the cleaner had reported this to security who had taken an inventory of the items in the safe and that the concierge had locked it up and had the key. I'm happy to report that everything was intact and I am so grateful for the honesty of the cleaner, as our lovely holiday could have been ruined otherwise.
TRANSPORT - We upgraded to Premium Economy with Thomson, which I think was worth it due to the length of the flight out, plus my husband is 6'4". before we travelled, Thomsons phoned and offered a private transfer from the airport for £63 return which was well worth it. I wouldn't have paid the £224 web price.
All in all a wonderful, magical and romantic holiday.

Room Tip: If you want a really quiet room ask for one of the 3000's.

This review is rather late (went to EDDS in May 2011) but i'm returning for my wedding in 6 weeks so I thought I would write this!
Firstly, the flight. We upgraded our seats at Newcastle airport however we were not impressed with the flight. We forked out around £40 for extra leg room and we found that they were just plonking people wherever they could on the plane. Then came the stop at Manchester, which we didn't even realise until we boarded the flight!

The baggage and immigration process at Cancun airport was relatively painless, however at this point you definately just want to get there after a long flight. The transfer to EDDS was good, as soon as you got on the coach you could buy a freezing cold can of Corona for 40 peso's. After an 11 hour flight it's the best lager I had ever tasted!

We stopped at several hotels before EDDS, however as soon as you are in and down to reception you are on fantasy island! Check in was very easy and after a brief introduction and a glass of bubbly you are off to your room on the back of a golf cart, your cases follow soon after.

The room we had was fantastic, the bed was probably the most comfortable I have ever lay on in my life. The room was spotless, mini-bar, flat screen TV, jacuzzi bath, massive walk in shower..what more could you ask for? We were on the first floor and our room was a 5 minute walk from reception and the main bars and restaurants. Like previous reviews the thing that really makes this place is the people it employs..they are fantastic. I don't really need to labour the point too much as it has been done before, they are friendly, attentive and most of all very professional in what they do. We tipped regularly even thought it's not expected, we felt that the staff deserved it for the service we received.

Our favourite restaurant was Mia casa, excellent food and atmosphere. Again, similar to previous reviews we found the quality of the food to be excellent - no issues at all. The breakfast's in the Brasserie were very good, everything was so fresh and there was such a wide variety to choose from. The hotel nightlife is very low key, there was entertainment at the main bar however we really didn't see much of it so I couldn't really comment on it. The two main bars are great to just sit and chill at and kick back with a cocktail or two!

During the day we spent most of the time at the activities pool, there was always something going on such as water volleyball, water aerobics etc and the pool had a great swim up bar. We did not spend any time at the other pool which is very quiet. The 'activity' pool may sound hectic but nothing is in your face and you can still chill out while things are going on.

We did several trips durin our stay, mainly with Thompsons. We did Coco Bongo's which was fantastic, we also did a snorkelling/speedboat trip which was very enjoyable. We also went to Tulum on the bus, what I would say that there was not much shade and the heat was brutal! it was still a good day out.

All in all we can't wait to return to EDDS, I think it's fantastic value for money and a superb place to be for a great relaxing holiday.

Nothing was to much trouble for all the staff the Spa was excelant, food freshly done for each person, bedrooms very clean & comfortable this hotel has certainly upt the standard for any future holiday, only wish the company had hotels in other countries to match. Would most certainly go again and again to this chain of hotels.

Room Tip: while only three stories high no lifts so would request a room lower down if stairs are a problem

My wife and I stayed at EDSS from 18/02/12 until 03/03/12 in Room 1612 and, barring the nightmare of Cancun Airport after the 11 hour and fifteen minute flight from Manchester with thomson, it was pure excellence.

Firstly back to the flight. We upgraded to Premium Economy and it was mostly worthwhile, especially on the way out. The staff were excellent and attentive. There were plentiful drinks and also ice cream at one point. There was a choice of three main meals and, apart from the somewhat annoying child that sat to my left ( I was like how dare they have kids on here when we are going to an adults all inclusive lol) it was all good. That is until the last two hours when all but two of the toilets had to be locked because the tanks were full. This meant not only crossing your legs but also when we got to Cancun, no water. Ordinarily this would not have mattered because you should get through the airport fairly quickly right? Wrong. Due to numerous flights arriving at the same time it was literally carnage at immigration. You will need to have kept some water for this because it took an hour and a half just to get through that bit. There is only one carousel at the terminal and there was luggae strewn everywhere, none of which was (after a lengthy search) ours. It hadn't even come off yet. We eventually got our suitcases and then had to join another queue where the luggage is scanned (for some unknown reason) and then you have to show your passport again, and press a button on a machine that if it turns green lets you go through, red means that you have been randomly selected to have your bags searched. At this point we were seriously parched and so we legged it outside and thankfully there was a kiosk which charged 90 pesos for two bottles of water. Didn't care, spent the money. We then, also thankfully got ushered to our private transfer (just so worth the £60 extra because we heard that other passesngers then had to wait a further hour after we left for the EDSS for everyone to get on-then it's a 1.5 hour trip after that).

Anyway James the travel rep got it both barrels from me, for which I apologise but my life what an airport. Funny thing was that we met some Uk'ers later in the holiday who said it took them 20 mins to get through so it was just a perfect storm. But remember to keep water just in case. Also you have to fill out two forms one for immigration, the other for customs and thomsons only had the one form, but a rep at the airport found us without too much issue later.

We got to EDSS after passing numerous hotels, many with snazzy main gates. EDSS is much less in your face. We got to the main reception area and were then taken to the orientation meeting where you get your room and safe key, along with a load of info about the resort etc. Plus a fab cocktail called an eldorado (and also champagne) , something that we were to revisit on many occasions later on in the hol. I recommend it, with or without alcohol. You also get mini sandwiches and also spring rolls, excellent :). We were then taken by golf buggy to our room, which, we discovered the next day was about 10 feet away from the orientation room but the buggy took us in a circuit and we were very disorientated, earned him 100 pesos tip though the craft devil lol :) Fair play to him.

The room was excellent, and as everybody else says you get an enormous bed which is extremely comfy, aircon (which I didnt think was too noisy but soem might-it was also a bit over efficient and the room could become cold at times-bizarre but true). Anyway 23 degrees was a happy medium setting. We had room service that night and it was ok, a little tepid in temperature but hey, we weren't complaining. The rooms don't look dated at all in my opinion. I recommend you bring hangers for your clothes as you get about 10 I think, so five each between you. We had a great flatscreen tv which showed the odd premiership game on ESPN and a nice, if narrow balcony, which overlooked a lawned area and wa, in my opinion a perfect location. We could just about see the sea as well despite this being a standard room. It was also excellently located for the bars restaurants and main reception area and far enough away from the main bar which could get a bit noisy at night with the entertainment. Back to the room, you get Teva toiletries which are nice but we had to ask a couple of times for more shower gel, no biggie we got loads delivered. Mini bar was good and gets stocked with diet coke, sprite and both sol and a lite beer (cant remember the name but it was good) and it was fab to sit out on the balcony which got some late afternoon sun. you also get robes and slippers to use. The jacuzzi we used twice but the first time it was on it's maximum setting and it went mental, water went everywhere! Good laugh.

There is literally tonnes of wildlife and loads of sometimes quite large iguanas about. It's great.

The ambiance of the place is very very relaxed. All the staff are lovely apart from the appropriately named "Jesus" in Arricefes. Cheer up mate, you work in paradise :)
Estella has to get a special mention. We plonked ourselves down on one of the king size beach beds down the beach (heading away from the resort) and Estella was our beach waitress. She was amazing, knew our names in five minutes, what we liked to drink, the works.

The resort was allegedly full but we always got ourselves the same bed, and I went down at about 7.30-8am in the morning with the towels to ensure we did. There was always beds available however but the better ones get snapped up early of course. Majority of folk at the resort were either Brits, Canadians or Americans, of varying ages which I was surprised about. It wasnt all 50's plus contrary to some of the reviews. Most of the noise came from the latter group, blimey they like their high fives and stating the absolute obvious just so they can say something and fill the blessed silence. Anyway :)

Restaurants

Mia Casa was fabulous, the wine drinkable, no problem. Klay Talay was good too, portions sizes at all of the places were fine and you coudl always ask for more dishes, especially at the latter. Arricefes just had this canteen feeling which put us off going in the evening. We tried the mexican once, was ok. The sandwicherie was ace and did great burgers. Mine was a texan, no cheese (sin cheso) was just like a BK Whopper. Tremendous.

Drinks were great, the cerveca was very drinkable, named brands everywhere. Try the tequila tasting, (especially if the weather takes a turn, it did, once for us in 2 weeks). The best was a cream tequila which tatsed a bit like baileys. Bought a bottle, $40. hmm.

Before I forget, tipping. Can be done in peso's (20 a time for Estella or a waiter in a restaurant) or dollars, no problem with either. Also there is an ATM in the reps office next to main reception if you dont want to take too much.

I could go on about the little details but I think that's been covered elsewhere.

We did two trips, Chitchen Itza which was great because we got our own private cab there and back and we got there pretty early, and so avoided the crowd rush, which was fairly serious. wem also went to Tulum but couldnt get onto the beach for some reason. We got there on a Collective, 30 pesos each (about £1.50) and so really good value, if incredibly cramped inside (I ricked my back getting out of one on the return leg) A taxi would have been 12 dollars each way I think for the same trip which is still not bad as it is a good 20km away from the resort.

Apart from that we did nothing but read, drank, ate and lay in the sun. We also watched people from the resort up the coast try to walk into our own, the security guy always intercepted them and made them turn around immediately after which they had to undertake what we called "the walk of shame". Seriously, I wouldn't dream of walking into someone elses resort. It's just good manners not to! There is a really good breeze on the beach so that's the place to be in my opinion. It's not worth the extra dough for a swim up, plus there aren't very secluded/private.

My wife had a spa treatment, and whilst it was excellent it was a male masseuse and had she known before hand she would have asked for a female definitely. Lovely place though and they have a well stocked gym which I constantly threatened to go to, but never did :) I did however do one jog up and down the drive which, when you see it, is longer than it sounds.

The two weeks were a dream, met some lovely people, Hi Simon and Julia Gent!, and I would recommend anyone go there for a chill holiday. Even the entertainment was pretty good, the fire and light and Myan shows being the pick.

i just wish they could sort out Cancun airport.

Would we go back.....absolutely, despite the time it takes to get there. It's a bargain for what you get.
.

First time in Mexico and what a good choice we made.
Excellent accomodation, facilities, food, service and people. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and they went out of their way to ensure everything was just right. Dont believe those who say that the food portions were small, I eat well and was completely satisfied. No, it is not a la carte highstreet style but you are in a holiday resort and within their limitations it was excellent. If any restaurant was full we just waited at the nearest bar until a table was ready and the maitre`d came and found us. Never more than 20 mins.
The rooms are very well appointed and the double jacuzzi was a delight after a day on the beach. A large ghlass of wine and a hot tub, what more can you ask for.
2 things detracted from the overall holiday. First, DO NOT GO FOR A SEAVIEW ROOM, they were seaview at one time but the trees have grown so that all you get is a seafront room. This has been brought to the attention of both the hotel and the tour operator - inour case first choice/thomson - and neither have attempted to actually tell the truth about this.
secondly, the beach is not the best, hurricanes have had a devastating effect and though a lot of work is being done, the beach has not recovered. However we are beach people and it did not spoil our enjoyment. Always plenty of beds - we did not join in with the idiotic 7am sunbed scramble - and the beach waiter service was excellent. The annoying thing about this is that despite first choice being told that the doctored photograph in the brochure is nothing like reality, they just come out with the same old platitudes about brochures being printed a long time in advance. We checked, the beach has been like it is now for over 4 years. Get your act together first choice and stop conning people.
Beach and room view apart you get exactly what you would like to expect from this first class hotel asnd we would recomend it, with the 2 caveats, to anyone.

Room Tip: Go for an upper room, if you do not want the lazy river rooms.
