Stayed May 2011. We really enjoyed this resort. The rooms were very nice and clean (loved the king size beds), the grounds were beautiful and very well maintained. The fridge was always stocked with water, pop, beer and peanuts. Staff was friendly and never once did we feel unsafe. We had a wonderful stay and would definitely go back to the Barcelo and would be interested in trying other Barcelos! We booked our trip through Westjet and there were reps to greet you at the airport and at the resort to book excusions and found them very knowledgeable, efficient and helpful when booking a tour. I hope this will help you enjoy your holidays.
The hotel is good.Rooms are nice and clean.Out on the balcony there is a rack to hang your clothes.A air dryer in the bathroom and a iron.and a fridge full of water juices coke and beer
the wine is not drinkable.the red wine taste like 1/2 wine and the white wine like vinegar. If your luggage is not too heavy put a bottle of wine in each suitcase and buy the rest at the duty free.We really appreciated doing so especially if you like wine with supper.at dinner time we took a beer or a glass of champagne(drinkable). If you want no sun on the beach there are 2 pine treas on your right that put you in the shade(Pass the bar of the pool. Please reserve your spot before 9pm.
We were not too lucky for the reservations of the restaurants because we reserve them too late.As soon as you arrive, reserve other wise there is not much left.In each building there is a desk that,s were you reserve or the next morning(ground floor of each building where your rooms are).
We went sailing, snorkeling at the peer Full of fishes.
The best place to swim is from your room to the beach turn left and go where there is more people less rocks,
of all the barcelo hotels ,we have the best beach. It was windy the week we went so no kayak for us.the following week the winds died down. So the last thing:
We took the public transportation to go to playa del Carmen.on the main street, every 5 minutes there was a Van passing comfortable air condition for 25.pesos
At the lobby of our hotel We tried to change our money no luck we went to the carribe with no problems, the best thing is to bring US money to tip the personnel. In the hotel:us Money out of the hotel with the locals :pesos.
Hope this will help you.

I recently returned from my vacation at this hotel. It was my second time visiting this resort. This time my Vacation went down hill from the second day there. My safe was broken into and my phone, cash, watch, and credit cards were stolen from my room. I reported the incident to the hotel staff and they were not helpful, they just told me to call the police. I was not compensated for over the $2000 I lost, so my vacation was spent not doing any fun activities. I WILL NEVER return to this hotel due to the in adequate action the staff took to help correct and/or compensate for the thieving staff... MORE REVIEW TO COME

This resort has shade everywhere except where you need it, on the beach! The walkways have canopies over them, and it is nice to be in the shade while walking, however if you enjoy the beach as we do be prepared to go through plenty of sunscreen and still get burned. The only shade you will find is from the palms, and that keeps moving. There is shade available at the tower for the lifeguard but, be prepared to defend it! As the sun tracks across the sky the shade moves so if you go for a swim move your chair first or you'll lose it to another opportunistic shade seeker!
The food is adequate, although it becomes repetetive very quickly.
We did not take in any of the entertainment.
The rooms are spacious enough and reasonably clean, no complaints there.
There are limited bars and restaurants.
We found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The biggest asset is the beach. The sand is powdery to gritty and the water is super clear and calm.
The snorkling is great with lots of variety of sealife including, I was happy to see, live coral.
The gardeners do a fantastic job on the grounds. It's a good combination of gardens grass and wild areas. We felt completely relaxed and safe here.
Beverages are similar to most most all inclusive. Draft beer and no name liquors.

This was a multi-generational family trip. The resort was clean and the staff was friendly. Lots for kids to do, rock climbing, kayaks, feeding fish, bungee trampoline, mini-golf, and so on. The pools were beautiful and the ocean/beach area very nice. Lots of places to lay out in the sun and in the shade by both the pools and the ocean. Food was average at lunch and dinner but pretty good at breakfast. Evening entertainment was lacking and the alcoholic beverages were pretty weak. We had a good time, but I am glad we were there for a family trip with kids. This is not the place for couples or partiers. Very mellow. I would only recommend this resort if you are bringing children and don't plan to stay out late having fun.

Barceló Maya Beach – What can we say..wow! 7 in total were in our group. 2 kids, 1 teenager, 3 adults, and 1 senior. We all loved it and can’t say enough. We stayed for 7 days during March and left wanting more.

The grounds were enormous and well maintained. Prepare to get your walk on. The service was outstanding for the most part with the odd exception (the properties are littered with staff, you are bound to find the odd bad seed). Most of the staff spoke very good English. Rooms were spacious and cleanliness was adequate. Pools are massive and never once felt crowded. We could always get spots near the pool with the exception of the water park at the Colonial which at times could be tricky. The kids absolutely loved the water park.

Food was good and there was always a large selection. The buffet included a large selection of fruits, cold cut meats, and a variety of other foods including delicious smoothies. Lattes and cappuccinos were awesome! Not the sugar filled garbage you buy at local coffee establishments here in Canada! I’m not a picky eater so finding something good was never an issue. My wife is more of a picky eater and she had no complaints about the food either.

At the time of check-in we were able to book 3 a la carte restaurants. We asked for early time slots (5:30) for 2 of the restaurants because of the kids. The third a la carte was just my wife and I and we booked a 7:30 time. Food was good at the restaurants, not exceptional. We preferred the Spanish food over the seafood and Mexican. The themed restaurants were very nice inside. Service at the 3 a la cartes we visited was exceptional!

We took a trip into Playa Del Carmen to do some shopping on 5th Ave. Unless you love to haggle, personally I wouldn’t go back. The vendors are relentless to take your money and prices start at a premium. You can hound them down but the game gets old. We didn’t walk much more than a couple blocks before we got tired of the constant harassment of the vendors. We instead enjoyed a nice lunch at Senor Frogs. Most items we found on 5th Ave were also sold at the shopping plaza on the Barceló grounds. Prices for the most part started at half the price at Barceló than they started in Playa. Please don’t take your pictures with the baby wildlife…sad.

Something to do at Barceló for everyone...table tennis, tennis, basketball, soccer, video games, mini golf, chip and putt, volleyball, pool tables, archery, fitness center, spa, incredible snorkeling, plus more I’m probably forgetting about.

We can’t stop thinking about our stay at Barceló...loved it!

Room Tip: Uxmal is closest to theatre and main buffet. Coba is 2nd furthest with Tulum being the furthest. A...
