We just returned from a 7 night stay at Barcelo Tropical and we all liked it very much. The beach was awesome with plenty of shady areas thanks to the many Palm trees on the beach. Also 1st time we don't have to get up at 7 am to have a chair in a shady area. Another plus is the pools are next to the beach so that you go pool beach back and forth easy. The a la carte restaurants are very good. We had 4 and my preferred in order are: 1. Japanese, 2. steakhouse, 3. Italian 4. seafood.

The buffet was decent and the service excellent everywhere. We tried the catamaran and windsurf and were able to get courses with nice staff.

On the downside: very slow check-in, painful when you look forward to use the premises, and VERY PAINFUL information session from our travel agency (Expedia) as the agent tried to sell us all kinds of rip-offs tours and said nothing about all the activities that we had already paid for in the all-inclusive. Take my advice: don't go to the info session.

We've spent 2 weeks in Barcelo Maya Tropical Resort.
It was fabulous time!
Everything was very good: the food, the pools, the room, the beach, and the night shows which were the best we have ever had.
Also the snorkeling at the hotel is amazing. There was a lot of fish in the water.
The only complaints are:
- the quality of the wine. It was tasteless, just like acid.
- Maybe the service could be little better ( at the buffet restaurants and bars )

Reviewed July 25, 2012

In June 2012, my new husband and I traveled to the Mayan Riviera to get married. We chose the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort as it gave our guests a wide variety of choice for the price of accommodation. Our wedding was scheduled for 4:00pm, cocktails from 5:00pm to 6:00pm and our reception was scheduled from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

We had started planning our wedding months in advance but found it difficult to get in touch with our wedding planner. The wedding planner’s service is provided by the hotel as part of the extra wedding packages that are purchased through the hotel. We chose the Strawberry Passion package, which included a reception dinner for 15 guests. We had 29 people at the wedding and purchased an extra 12 dinners which cost us an additional $66.00 US each.
Most of our guests arrived the weekend before the wedding but none of them received any instruction from the hotel as to where the wedding was to take place. Even though I had provided a list of guest to our wedding planner prior to our arrival, none of the hotels had been made aware that their guests were a part of our wedding party.

We had planned for a wedding and reception on the beach and as the time for the ceremony grew closer, it was apparent to all that it was going to rain. Part of the way through the ceremony, it began to sprinkle but we were able to continue. The wedding ceremony was beautiful and the Judge that performed our wedding went above and beyond for us.
After the ceremony, we planned a cocktail reception and a Mariachi band to play for our guests before dinner, all of which was done in the rain. As we went with our photographer for post wedding photos, the rain continued to fall but no arrangements were made by our wedding planner to move the party indoors.

When we return to our reception, the guest had been seated at the reception table on the beach, in the rain. Although the table was situated under a canopy of tree cover, rain had begun to fall more rapidly and dripped through the tree cover and our wedding planner was nowhere to be found. As the servers began serving appetizer to us and our water logged guests, it started to bucket down and we retreated to the beach chapel for cover. We quickly learned that our wedding planner had made no alternate arrangements in case of rain.

The longer we waited for the rain to stop, the more we realized it was not going to let up and we had to move to shelter. On the direction of my maid-of-honor and bridesmaids, we moved our party into the Caption Morgan's Beach grill.

While this beach venue is actually very nice, with a pirate ship built into the middle of the grill, it had been open to other guests during the day and it completely filthy with food all over the floor. As my bridesmaids quickly started to arrange and setup the tables, the service staff fumbled to get all the equipment inside. Finally after an hour of interruption, dinner service was re-started inside the grill however our appetizers had been left out in the rain, along with many of my decorations.

With every wedding, there are allergies and vegetarians to consider and mine was not different. As our dinner was served, the service staff struggled to locate the people that had specially ordered meals. Finally frustrated with the whole service, I personally had to show them who to serve which dishes.

To make things even better, the surf and turf we had ordered was served at random, some getting well-done meat while others were served rare with no question of preference. Many of our guests, being gracious guests, simply didn’t eat their meals instead of complaining. At this point I was so angry with the service; I yelled at our server and return both mine and my husband meals to the kitchen as the excuses poured from the head waiter. Our meals delayed our activities other 30 minutes.

As a result of the extended delays and wait time in dinner service, my son 9 and nephew 11 had gotten impatient and hungry. They didn’t want to wait for the steak and lobster so I finally relented and requested that they be brought meals from the children’s menu, chicken fingers and fries. All the children’s menu items were provided as part of the package however I had paid extra for the boys’ meals. The hotel offered no compensation for the meals.

Before desert was served, we started with speeches, hoping to move things forward so that we would have time for the first dance but unfortunately it was not soon enough. Shortly after we started, our photographer who we had hired through the resort had to leave. As a result, he was not there for the first dance or to capture us cutting our wedding cake.

After all the events of that night, I was informed at 9:30pm that our reception had to come to an end. After all the delays, the lack of preparation, my guests and I had been asked to vacate the grill. Needless to say, I was not a happy bride and when they asked us to comment in the wedding comment book, we promptly declined.

June is considered the low season for wedding in Mexico, the main season being May and in fact there were no other weddings at the resort that day. There was no reason the grill could not have been prepared ahead of time as it was clear during the ceremony it would rain. It was a good thing did decide to move in when we did, as the sprinkle of rain during the ceremony ended up being a thunderstorm followed by heavy rain the next 2 days.

Although the gardens are beautiful, the hotel reception, housekeeping, restaurant and bar staff where fantastic, the resort management left much to be desired. We complained, first to the wedding coordinator, then to the front desk, then to hotel management and finally to an email to their corporate head office. It took a corporate complaint for the hotel to do anything and still they hadn't listened or read my complaint. It was pure futility.

After spending more the 10 thousand of dollars on our trip, our wedding and all the extras including live entertainment, the hotel chose not to acknowledge our complaint, tried to discredit our claims using the report entered by the wedding planner who had not even been present. I could not have been more frustrated or disappointed with the whole experience.

I would not recommend the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort for anyone’s destination for weddings or any other special occasion. They are simply not capable of providing an acceptable level of services for such an event. I will never go back to another Barcelo, choose Iberstar or Riu instead.

Recently stayed at Barcelo Tropical resort from 7/9/12 through 7/14/12. What a wonderful resort. I went with my husband, daughter (18), her friend (19) and our son (12). Plenty for everyone to do. First I will explain our complaints and then get to the good stuff. We rated our trip and overall experience an 8 out of 10! Our complaints were: 1. check in: room request not honored. Traveling with children that are 18 and 19 is still scary if they have never been out of the United States before. When we booked we requested adjoining rooms or rooms next to each other. They did not have these rooms available and really didn't seem to care about my concerns. Arrived around 12:00pm and check in wasn't until 3:00pm. Hassle carrying around the passports and not being able to swim! Once rooms were assigned and we checked in, the rooms and resort was immaculate and housekeeping staff was very helpful .2. Last complaint was the food. Breakfast buffet was delicious but the lunch, dinner and grill were extremely bland and left much to be desired. Desserts all tasted the same. Specialty restaurants were great. We were allowed two tickets. We went to the Steak House and Italian restaurants. Men must wear long pants. My husband did not have long pants so they made him borrow a pair! Very embarrassing.!! Pool bar staff very nice. Facilities were fantastic. A true caribbean dream. Staff always smiling. Small water park for children up to about 13! It worked for my son. Shows at night were pretty good and the shopping area was great. No need to ever leave the complex once you arrive!!! The water was unbelievably blue and could see a lot of fish off the dock. We would definitely stay there again. Great vacation for the money!

Room Tip: Yucatan building 7146! First floor close to everything!

We went to Barcelo Maya Tropical between june, 29 2012 and july 6, 2012. The week was fantastic. For 6 years, we went to Gran Palladium (Royal) Mexico, Gran Bahia Principe Coba Mexico and now the Barcelo Tropical. Each have greats and bad things but Barcelo is by far the best of the three. The Beach is fantastic because you can do lots of things. For catamaran (you must be there at 8:00 am to be sure to have a place. Bring a book and relax until 8:30am to do reservation). We did snorkling all the week in front of the Tropical Section. Lots of fishs.
There are lots of place in the water that we don't need watershoes and there are lots of beautifull waves.

The food is excellent at the buffet and A la carte restaurants. We missed the buffet because there are lots of things. Don't panic if food is not super hot. It's not a problem for us. IT'S A BUFFET ! Lot's of Guacamole and others spicy sauces hummm delicious in various tortillas.

Don't forget the ice creem and line and mangue sorbet. Fries is the same has McDonalds without the salt of McDo ;-) We are people that we eat good food at home and we are very happy with the buffet.

For the a la carte restaurant, we did (you must reserve immidiatly when you checkin , before going to your room if it's possible)

Japanese - Excellent (ask for the show table, it's a must)
Italian - Excellent
Steak House - Very Good
Spanish - Excellent - (ask for mayan coffee, a super show to see)

All the restaurants are delicious. Staff are very friendly at all the place. Important note, the red and white wine is impossible to drink. Try it, if you want to make bizarre face ;-) We bought at each a la carte restaurant a bottle of wine. Coffee is really good. Specialy the cappoccino.

All around the resort, drinks is excellent. For us, the quantity of alcool is enough. It's draft Corona Beer and is very.

The room is perfect. A/C work perfectly. We give tips in the frigo and on the bed. We receive lots of things with beer and water. Lemon Peanuts and nature chips. And lots of water because we ask him. The bed have been changed 3 times I think and we have each morning new towel in the room. Nothing to complain for the room. Everything is perfect.

Some on trip advisor talk about difficulties to have drink at the beach bar and it's true. People who speak spanish have more service. But, it's not a big problem for me. We are in vacation ! So, relax and be smily.

Summary.....

SUPER BEACH
EXCELLENT FOOD
THE WATER PARK FOR KIDS IT'S VERY HOT !
KIDS HAVE A LOTS TO DO THERE.
GROUND IS IMMACULATE.

Things to change : the service from staff at the bar and smile at the buffet.

Compare to Gran Bahia and Gran Palladium
===================================

Beach
---------

The beach at Gran Bahia is horrible. Palladium is better, but Barcelo, is wow !

Food
-------

Fantastic at the Barcelo. Restaurant have A/C.
Excellent at Gran Bahie. Restaurant don't have A/C.
Very Poor at Gran Palladium compare to the others

Staff
----------

Better at Gran Palladium and Gran Bahia Principa Coba

Ground
--------------

All the resort is equivalent but I prefer Barcelo.

Room
---------------

It's the same for the three resort but A/C work better at Barcelo and it's the same hard bed at barcelo and gran bahia.

Our trip was fantastic. My girlfriend and I will go there again next year. We will try the Barcelo Palace because we want to eat at the French and Brasil Restaurants. Maybe there are others resort in Mexico with beautifull beach and excellent food, but Barcelo Tropical is excellent in all aspects.

Room Tip: reserve your a la carte restaurant immidiatly. buy wine at the restaurant. it's really impossible to like it.
