“Amazing vacation”
Reviewed 16 February 2012

We just got back from our stay at Barcelo Maya Palace. We booked with WestJet Vacations and had told them we were travelling to celebrate a birthday, and they upgraded us to the Palace. Wow. There were 11 in our group ranging from 13 months old to 66 years and everyone left thrilled with our choice. Word to the wise, 7 days at this resort is not enough.

We spent the whole week walking the grounds and commenting on the beauty and cleanliness of the facility. On our second last day we were looking at the map, and realized we had only seen about 2/3rds of the property. My husband and I are hoping to go back, maybe even this November or December. We were blown away.

We found the housekeeping staff fantastic, the service in the buffets and snack bars was great and overall customer service was top notch. I'm a bit of a foodie, and I have to say the presentation of their food, even in the buffets was really well done. The food was good with great variety but I will admit that I've had better seafood at other resorts. (Im a spoiled maritime girl with very high seafood standards). The entire resort was really accessible, which was fantastic. You could take paved or tiled pathways (most were covered) every where within the Palace portion of the resort. That made getting around so nice, because you could do it in the shade during the hot days. It also made it super easy for strollers, likely people with wheel chairs would agree.

Notes for those travelling with little ones:

Strollers are a must for this resort, it's huge. If you have an umbrella stroller with a storage basket below, bring it. (Ours is a Graco IPO, and we added on a Tommy Tippy parent organizer and it was perfect!) I wouldn't recomend the travel system or 3 wheel kind if you plan to use the shuttle to get around the resort. They are too bulky to get on and off the busses very easily. There were ample high chairs in all the resturants and this is a super kid friendly resort. We always bring our own pack-n-play for our little one because you just never know what the hotels 'cribs' will be like. They set one up in our room and I was very impressed. It was in new condition and a nicer model than most hotel supplied pack-n-plays. When we return, we will leave ours at home. (see photo). The kiddie pools were amazing, we couldn't keep the munchkins out if them. Warm, clean and fun.

What shocked and impressed me is there was also a beautiful and secluded Adults only area tucked away behind shrubs and palm trees with a swim up bar. Giving that area privacy and a zen feeling, away from the hustle and busstle of the main pools.

My only negitive comments, if you can call them that, is this. Thre was always a long line up to speak with the concierge to book dinner reservations. They needed more people to handle this for such a large resort. Even though there are concierge desks in each of the buildings, in our building the Oaxaca tower we hardly ever saw someone at that desk.

Next if you are a tennis player, you have to reserve time on the courts. We brought our own rackets and balls and were able to hop on and off courts as the timing suited us (we had the 13mth old, so planning for a tennis break was quite hard). We had decided we'd vacate the courts if/when the people who had reserved it showed up. This strategy worked well for us.

If you are planning on borrowing snorkel equipment, the only place to do so is at the far end from the palace by the dock. Again, not a problem for most but a pain for us with an unpredictable 13month old. Loaner sets were in good condition however and there was ample stock. You were limited to 1 hour/day unless there was low demand. For beach swimming we like the little ones to swim in a life vest. Normally we borrow the hotels when we travel, however we only saw them again, by the dock. So they were a little too far out of the way for us to want to use theirs. Consider bringing your own if this is a concern for you. They do have inflatible ones for purchase at the shops, if that suits you.

We did come home with some sand flea bites from the beach, but other than that I didn't see anything other than a 'resident' raccoon or leamer (not sure) by the French resturant, iguana's, geco's and fish. My family saw some turtles and a sting ray in the water while swimming at the beach by the Palace.

We will definitely be back, and hopefully soon!

Amazing resort! Very beautiful terrific pools and hotel rooms. The place was huge so be prepared to walk quite a bit and possibly get lost a few times. The snorkeling right out front the hotel was great saw groups of up to 5 sea turtles, plenty of fish and sting rays. Ensure to make dinner reservations in advance since they fill up fast. Overall a great experience.

We had great 4-night stay at Barcelo Maya PALACE DELUXE. The hotel is about 1.5 hours from airport (via Best Day Vans, booked on Expedia). Be careful when booking for Barcelo Maya, it's a huge complex of 5 hotels that share a long stretch of private beach. Other Barcelos include Maya Beach, Maya Caribe, Maya Colonial, and Maya Tropical. We found Palace Deluxe to have best reviews on our research before the trip.

Our room at Maya Palace Deluxe Hotel is at the end of Michoacan building, about 10 minute walk from food and beach. We thought it would be a problem due to distance, but the walk was short and scenic. Our room was nice and clean. There's a humid smell at first in our room, which resolved after turning on AC.

Maya Palace Deluxe Hotel is all inclusive. There's a good variety at the buffets. Buffets always include selection of salads, breads, meats, seafood, desserts, and fruits. There are made to order stations (for breakfast usually has omelet and fresh juice stations, lunch includes pasta, taco, and meat stations). We liked most of the stuff we ate at the buffets. There's plenty of alcohol drinks everywhere. You can order them near beach/pool, bars, and restaurants/buffets. Their mixed drinks are generally pretty good (mojito, pina colada, long island ice tea, etc). There's Corona for beer drinkers. I don't recommend their house wine; it tasted water down and inexpensive. Wait staff at the buffets is generally pretty good.

There are 3 specialty restaurants at Palace Deluxe: French, Caribbean, and Brazilian. Make sure you book them as soon as possible at Concierge after arriving. Dinner reservations fill up pretty quickly. You can also book dinner for restaurants at Maya Beach, Colonial, Tropical, or Caribe. We tried the French, Caribbean, and Brazilian at the Palace. The food and services at French and Caribbean restaurants are very good. Wait staff is very pleasant and attentive. We had a bad experience at Brazilian because the restaurant was understaffed and the food was just okay. For guys, make sure you pack some long pants; no shorts are allowed at the restaurants.

The best part is the private beach. It is gorgeous. Sand is white and very fine. The ocean is blue and clear. There are plenty of beach chairs around. Beach towels are free, no need to pack your own. The beach has very gentle slope and rarely any waves at all. You can be 15-20 feet away from the beach and water is only at chest level. There are life guards on duty for that extra reassurance. The water is so clear you can see sea turtles (saw 3 turtles on our last day) and fishes swimming around you. We also participated in a fun water aerobics class at the beach around noon.

For snorkeling, there's good snorkeling at the reefs in front of Palace Deluxe end of the beach. Nice reefs and variety of fish; be careful of getting too close to the reefs. Most people snorkel at the pier in front of Maya Caribe. There was a lot of fish (due to people feeding fish food) but less variety of fish. You can rent life jackets for free near the pier. You can also rent snorkeling gear for free at the Diving Center; bring cash or credit card for 50 dollar deposit. There's also free water tricycle and kayaking near the pier.

Bring your own sunblock lotion. Otherwise, be prepared to pay for 25 USD or more for sunblock at Barcelo stores—for small tube just enough for maybe 2-3 days of use for 2 people. A lady at the store was about to pay 30 USD for generic antibiotic/Neosporin cream. Souvenir was regular price, 20 for tshirts and 3-4 dollars for magnets.

Overall, we really enjoyed our trip. We definitely recommend it!

My wife, I and our two daughters four and one year old just returned from a one week stay and had an excellent family vacation. We chose this resort because it was family friendly, had a water part and most of all because of the high marks given in reviews. We have traveled extensively throughout Mexico, Jamaica and DR and can compare it other RIU, Iberostar, Bahia Principe amd Barcelo resorts. Out of them all, this one is definately the best.

We arrived at the resort around 1 PM after about a 1 hour ride and had a disappionting start. We were met by a bell hop who directed us to the check in desk. I was a bit disappointed that we weren’t greeted with a welcome drink while waiting in line. Check in was bizarre, I e-mailed a week earlier to request a room near the pool, lobby and restaurants since we had small children and my wish was granted. We got a room in the first building (Michoacan) as requested. However, after we checked in, the front desk clerk told us to come back at 3PM for the room keys? In the meantime, we went to the buffet to have lunch. After we returned, we were told to get back in line to get the room key. This procedure is very flawed. You need to return to the check in desk again to get your key. If the room is ready, one should be allowed to go to the room or if it isn’t the key should still be given and go to the room at 3PM. I don’t understand why they won’t allow you into the room earlier if the room is ready. I never experienced this at any other resort. Very inefficient! Management should streamline this process so people don’t waste part of their vacation waiting around when their room is ready.

The room was very big and clean. The bathroom was very large with a tub, standup shower and two sinks. The cleaning maid did a great job keeping the room tidy and the fridge was restocked everyday. Our room was only a couple minutes walk to the main pool and waterpark, a huge plus for us. Yes the resort is large and you do have to do some walking, so if big isn’t you thing, look for a smaller resort.

The landscaping was beautiful and the pools were very clean and very well kept. Now for the water park and kids club – this is the main reason why we chose this resort. The water park is an excellent feature as it kept our four year old busy all day, she absolutely loved it! The Colonial next door also has a very similar water park that Palace guests can also use. The Barcy club for kids is also a great place for young children. It’s very structured and they have activities scheduled every hour like face painting, sea shell hunt, apron painting, water balloon toss etc. There is a schedule of activities when you check in your child. At first I was a bit skeptical leaving her there but the activity girls are very caring and put in a lot of effort to make the children happy. The children are also well supervised when they go to the beach or water park. The kids club even has activities after dinner time until 9PM like musical games and dancing. Our daughter met a lot of new friends and grew close to the instructors. Highly recommended for parents who need a short brake without the stress of worrying about the well being of their child.

The beach was just OK. The sand wasn’t very soft as it was a combination of sand and coral rock. The sand towards the other resorts was much better. The water was very clear and there were many fish near the coral reef. You can purchase fish food or get some bread from the buffet to feed the fish and they will come right up you. The water is very calm as the beach is on a small harbor. It’s ideal for small kids and snorkeling as there are no waves. My wife and I got massages on the beach, well worth it.

The restaurants were very good. I don’t understand other complaints as you could not go hungry at the buffet. There is a very large variety of food and it is cooked to your liking. We also ate at the French which was very good and the Rodezio which was wasn’t very good due to the meats being over and under cooked. The service at all restaurants was excellent. Nobody in out party got sick or had any stomach issues, just stick to the bottled water. Perhaps the greatest asset of this resort is the employees who work very had to provide a favorable customer experience. We brought a lot of singles for tipping as it was well deserved. We didn’t see any of the shows since our children went to bed early. The theatre is very nice as I watched the Super Bowl there. All the bars have top shelf liquor which was a nice benefit and very good service also. There was no communication problem with the employees, I was pleasantly surprised at how well they spoke English. Most of the guests were from Canada or the USA. I speak some Spanish and it goes a long way if you try to make an effort to speak to them in their native language.

I really don’t understand the negative reviews that were posted! The complainers obviously didn’t do their research or need to do a better job managing their expectations. Quit whining and spend double or triple the money and stay at the Mayakoba, Grand Velas or a Four Seasons. Some people will never be satisfied…you get what you pay for. Is it perfect? No, but here you get an excellent value for your money. Thankfully the good reviews overwhelmingly outnumber the bad ones. You won’t be disappointed if you go with an open mind and a bit of patience. There’s a reason why this resort was booked to capacity while we were there.

Overall, this is an excellent family resort, especially for those with small children or couples looking for a good upscale value. If you’re looking to party, this isn’t the place for you, go to Cancun. We walked to the other resorts and there is a big difference. Spend the extra money as the Palace is so much nicer and more upscale. It never felt crowded and there were always loungers available on the beach or by the pool. Palace guests can visit the other resorts buy not vice versa. I would highly recommend!

Room Tip: The Michoacan building is closer to the pool and restaurants.

The grounds at Barceló Maya Palace are lush and beautiful; everywhere you look you can see the attention to detail that has been taken. Barceló is a very large complex but I feel like it’s much easier to get around at Barceló Maya Palace than it is at other hotels. You can walk or take the train around the resorts, and in the middle of the complex is the shopping center. It’s a huge market of shops that carries any souvenir you could possibly want. There is also a disco shared by all the hotels in the Barceló complex.
Barceló Maya has nice big pools with swim up bar and fantastic waterpark for the kids. There’s also an adults only (18+ years old) pool for my clients looking for a little more peace and quiet. For kids aged 4-12, there is a wonderful thing called Barcy Club. Parents can sign up their kids for an hour or even all day and the activity staff do various activities with them. There is also a playground and mini-golf on the resort.
The beach at the Maya is a little rocky but it’s great for snorkeling. Remember to bring your water shoes. Just a short scroll down the beach is a perfect swimmable beach. The rooms are beyond wonderful; they are spacious, comfortable, have great security and very good maid service.
I love the variety of food at Barceló Maya Palace. Buffets were excellent in selection and quality of food is good. I always prefer to eat at the al carte restaurants and think the French and Mexican are my favorites. A note on dining — Guests staying 3 nights or less are allowed one a la carte dining experience, staying 4-6 nights are allowed 4 a la carte and staying 7+ nights are allowed 6 a la carte. Make their reservations as soon as you arrive. The a la carte restaurants can fill up quickly.
I have stayed here three times and always upgrade to Premium Club. It allows me WIFI, Premium brand liquor and unlimited access to all the restaurants in the complex. Love the disco and live entertainment in the bar. This hotel is great for families and large groups or destination weddings. Couples on a honeymoon might be better suited at a different hotel. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the resort.

Room Tip: upgrade to Premium Club

Was a beautiful resort but bring your walking shoes and two way radios would be helpful as if you lost your partner or group of friends you might not find them till the next day. Also long waiting line to get checked in, we arrived at 7pm and had at least a 45 minute wait for check in for our room and then only to find out it takes about a half hour walk to get there. Food was excellant and service was good. Water and beach were fantastic. Not trying to discourage anyone but there was a lot of people who did say room location was poor. If you did happen to get rooms up closer to front this might be an excellant resort but restaurants would still be a little ways. We would probably not go back to this one as it is just a little too big in area.

Room Tip: Ask for a room close to the ocean.

This is our third time here and we noticed a difference.

No management at all. All middle men who can't do anything.

Check in is hellish 4 hours !! So don't arrive before 4pm

And the wine d'table previously presentable is like detergent. Awful for their better end hotel !!!
Like a bad night at the Holiday Inn

Room Tip: Ask for the ground floor. Otherwise very noisy
