We just got back from our stay at Barcelo Maya Palace. We booked with WestJet Vacations and had told them we were travelling to celebrate a birthday, and they upgraded us to the Palace. Wow. There were 11 in our group ranging from 13 months old to 66 years and everyone left thrilled with our choice. Word to the wise, 7 days at this resort is not enough.
We spent the whole week walking the grounds and commenting on the beauty and cleanliness of the facility. On our second last day we were looking at the map, and realized we had only seen about 2/3rds of the property. My husband and I are hoping to go back, maybe even this November or December. We were blown away.
We found the housekeeping staff fantastic, the service in the buffets and snack bars was great and overall customer service was top notch. I'm a bit of a foodie, and I have to say the presentation of their food, even in the buffets was really well done. The food was good with great variety but I will admit that I've had better seafood at other resorts. (Im a spoiled maritime girl with very high seafood standards). The entire resort was really accessible, which was fantastic. You could take paved or tiled pathways (most were covered) every where within the Palace portion of the resort. That made getting around so nice, because you could do it in the shade during the hot days. It also made it super easy for strollers, likely people with wheel chairs would agree.
Notes for those travelling with little ones:
Strollers are a must for this resort, it's huge. If you have an umbrella stroller with a storage basket below, bring it. (Ours is a Graco IPO, and we added on a Tommy Tippy parent organizer and it was perfect!) I wouldn't recomend the travel system or 3 wheel kind if you plan to use the shuttle to get around the resort. They are too bulky to get on and off the busses very easily. There were ample high chairs in all the resturants and this is a super kid friendly resort. We always bring our own pack-n-play for our little one because you just never know what the hotels 'cribs' will be like. They set one up in our room and I was very impressed. It was in new condition and a nicer model than most hotel supplied pack-n-plays. When we return, we will leave ours at home. (see photo). The kiddie pools were amazing, we couldn't keep the munchkins out if them. Warm, clean and fun.
What shocked and impressed me is there was also a beautiful and secluded Adults only area tucked away behind shrubs and palm trees with a swim up bar. Giving that area privacy and a zen feeling, away from the hustle and busstle of the main pools.
My only negitive comments, if you can call them that, is this. Thre was always a long line up to speak with the concierge to book dinner reservations. They needed more people to handle this for such a large resort. Even though there are concierge desks in each of the buildings, in our building the Oaxaca tower we hardly ever saw someone at that desk.
Next if you are a tennis player, you have to reserve time on the courts. We brought our own rackets and balls and were able to hop on and off courts as the timing suited us (we had the 13mth old, so planning for a tennis break was quite hard). We had decided we'd vacate the courts if/when the people who had reserved it showed up. This strategy worked well for us.
If you are planning on borrowing snorkel equipment, the only place to do so is at the far end from the palace by the dock. Again, not a problem for most but a pain for us with an unpredictable 13month old. Loaner sets were in good condition however and there was ample stock. You were limited to 1 hour/day unless there was low demand. For beach swimming we like the little ones to swim in a life vest. Normally we borrow the hotels when we travel, however we only saw them again, by the dock. So they were a little too far out of the way for us to want to use theirs. Consider bringing your own if this is a concern for you. They do have inflatible ones for purchase at the shops, if that suits you.
We did come home with some sand flea bites from the beach, but other than that I didn't see anything other than a 'resident' raccoon or leamer (not sure) by the French resturant, iguana's, geco's and fish. My family saw some turtles and a sting ray in the water while swimming at the beach by the Palace.
We will definitely be back, and hopefully soon!
