“Fantastic!”
Reviewed 23 February 2011

Stayed there in January and I can’t say much more than what a wonderful place it was – I will be heading back whenever I am next up in the lakes (just hope this review doesn’t mean the prices go up) and the availability goes down....

We stayed in one of the rooms at the front which I think is on the road – not so much of a view, but still very nice with a lovely bathroom, all very clean and tidy.

Dinner was outstanding, and breakfast the next morning was fantastic – best bacon I have ever head, would love to know where they got it from!

Tricky to get to, but then that’s the point of hidden gems....

We stayed one night. The room and hotel service was excellent. The food and choice of wines is very good. Will definitely visit again in the near future.

The Punch Bowl Sets it self out to be different and it is, but it is also relaxed comfortable and warm.

When we are away we want genuine hospitality, warmth of service and great food that we can enjoy and don't have to dissect or analyse . is it good, great relax and enjoy. We knew nobody so didn't feel we had to impress we could be ourselves, and my tong in cheek comment is don't take your self to seriously and just enjoy this Gem of a Pub for what it is rather, special but not up itself .

Will the Blonde and I back you bet we will, but probably not in summer because there will be to many folk for me, but an out of season treat we appreciated it, simple things done well period.

The Skate which I had not eaten for years was well cooked and it is not an easy fish to cook and it was a good proper breakfast good Coffee and Free Wi-FI for those us that have to stay connected. BIG MASSIVE, HUGE PLUS when will the large groups wake and smell the coffee!

Having been married at the Punchbowl, we decided to return for our anniversary with our young son. Some of the more recent reviews seemed to suggest that guests had had issues with the food and service so we were a little concerned about our forthcoming stay.

Fortunately, there was no cause for concern - we were warmly welcomed when and the staff all seemed friendly, knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. Admittedly we dined early in the evening when there weren't many other guests eating but even at lunch when there had bene more diners, the staff seemed to cope perfectly well.

The food itself was very good, as was the choice of wines & guest beers. Our room was one of the cheaper ones but still offered great views and was nicely furnished. All in all, a comfortable, well-appointed country hotel & restaurant.

The complimentary champagne to celebrate our anniversary was a nice gesture too.

Stayed over New Year, booked months ago and paid a fortune..got there and over heard other guests moaning about how much they had paid. Well it was 50% less than we had!!! Was refunded when quieried, but left a very sour taste. Such a shame, the place is lovely but the management and most of the staff are rude, unfriendly and incompetent. New Years eve gastronomic meal was shocking and v v slow. No atmosphere at all.
Could have been a great place but really didn't feel comfortable there. Dont waste your money!

We spent the Christmas break in the Lake district – 1 night at the Windermere Suites, 2 The Punch Bowl in Crosthwaite, and finally Moss Grove in Grasmere (all reviewed).

Christmas eve and Christmas night was spent enjoying a 2 night Christmas package at the Punch Bowl Inn – 3 course dinner Christmas Eve, Breakfast both mornings, a 7 course Christmas lunch and lovely local gifts – preserves, damson gin, cakes, soaps and a stocking full of sweets. The Punch Bowl seemed to be the only pub in this very small town, it is also the post office, and right next to a picturesque church. A real get-away which is what we were after.

We had the Hebblewhite room – utterly amazing, a huge room with high ceilings and exposed beams. The bathroom was again huge – a claw footed rolled lipped bath, and overhead shower. I loved the bath and shower – good old fashioned fittings and loads of really hot water (so soft compared with London water). The room managed to be quaintly country but still absolutely luxurious – hubby and I are complete townies when it comes to hotels, and this one didn’t disappoint.

The bedroom is above one the bar and overlooked the car park – and there was absolutely no disturbances from this. We were next to Heelis and Strickland, both looked like lovely rooms, but Hebblewhite was much larger. I don’t think you could go wrong no matter which room you chose.

The restaurant and bar – again very classy, brand new and very plush furnishings. Again a townie dream of what a country inn should be. Lovely fires in the bar rooms and restaurant – we had snow on Christmas day as we sat in front of the fire and it was amazing. They also had bell-ringers come in a play for us which was very sweet.

The food is fantastic – I had the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon on crumpets both mornings. A good selection for all meals – we wished we weren’t doing the set course menu as we wanted to try a few more things from the main menu. Nice wine selection too.

All in all a fantastic experience – attentive staff, great food and great location. Excellent value taking the package deal. You can happily eat and drink for quite a few nights without getting tired of the place, and it is a sweet village to wander through. My only (mild) complaint is that it was all very civilised – we were hoping for a bit of fun with the other guests and locals at the bar, but everyone seemed to do their own thing, and conversations in the restaurant all very quiet. A bit of louder music to break through and create a bit more atmosphere would have been welcome.
