Hotel Lucerna Mexicali
Ranked #4 of 20 Hotels in Mexicali
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 11 September 2017

This was my 4th trip to Mexicali & every time it gets better. The Hotel Lucerna is rated as a 4 star place but deserves 5+. Super comfortable beds & pillows, excellent shower, small refrigerator, microwave. The staff is amazing, they encourage me to practice my Spanish but speak English very well. Easy taxi access, excellent to walk around near the hotel, too numerous to count array of restaurants, bars, shops & pharmacies. I find Mexicali to have kind people everywhere. The hotel has swimming pools, cabanas, hot tub, restaurants & meeting rooms. There is nothing shady or scary in this part of town. I'm very much aware of the posted dangers of traveling to Mexico. This place feels very upscale.

Room Tip: If your with family ask about the cabanas

I had a room with a noisy AC and they changed rooms for my entire satisfaction. Food quality was very good and they have room service 24/7. All staff was very friendly but specially the breakfast service and food was excellent.
Gym facilities could be improved

We stayed for one night at the Lucerna Hotel, we were able to make use of their pool and ate a couple times at their restaurant. Breakfast on Sunday was very good, with lots of options. Dinner at the Cafeteria on the other hand was not that great. When checking in, the employee forgot to return our driver licenses, that was annoying but I have to say once I made a couple calls to the hotel Maria Antonia took charge and made sure we got our Driver Licenses back in no time. Maria Antonia is definitely an asset to Hotel Lucerna - Thank you!. Overall, we had a great time and enjoyed the hotel and its facilities - We would return again.

I've been there for three night due to business trip. Location is good, on the main road to south and close to a lot of restaurants. The hotel itself looks pretty nice from outside, and palms and pool give the impressions of something huge, in all senses. But the reality is different: rooms are not very clean, and noisy! Both because traffic from outside and air conditioning (sounds like a AK47). Restaurant is expensive but without real reason, small portions and not so tasty. Personnel is friendly.
I would suggest only for few days and not on the rooms directly on the streets.

The Hotel Lucerna is probably one of the best options in Mexicali, but it has quite a bit of room for improvement. My first assigned room had problems with cleanliness (tire marks on sheets) so I notified staff and was moved to a bungalow. The bungalows are the better option than the tower rooms because you can walk directly outside, which adds to the garden feeling of the hotel. Bungalows have a fridge with free beverages, and there is an executive lounge where you can stop for breakfast and wine/canapes in the evening. Unfortunately on the weekends there are huge parties going on in the rooms in the pool area so it is very loud. I would only return to this hotel on a weekday.

I've travelled all over Mexico and I was surprised at the subpar meals I had at this hotel compared to most cuisine in nice Mexican hotels. This may be an issue with Mexicali in general, since Mexicali is land-bound and near the border, so there's a lot of American influence and American food tends to be a lower standard than classic, fine Mexican food. On the plus side, the piano player at the piano bar in Hotel Lucerna is wonderful and a joy to listen to. Maybe just stick to drinks at the hotel and venture out to the Chinese restaurants in town for your meals-- the Chinese restaurants I ate at in Mexicali were excellent.

We stayed for a short trip at this hotel. We chose it because of the amenities shown in their website's pictures. Those are misleading at best. The fitness center has 2 of their treadmills broken and that room is a sauna. I talked to Pamela in customer service because they have the fitness center thermostat limited to 78o F. She did nothing. I called again and talked to Daniel. The maintenance guy came half an hour later and did nothing. When I pointed out to him that 2 of the treadmills where broken he said that they were out of service and have been broken for a long time. The pool is small and the water is murky. The ice maker machine was broken. They advertise rooms smoking free but the whole floor where we were smelled like every room had people smoking pot. Horrible smell.

Room Tip: Don't choose 6th floor. The entire floor smells to people smoking pot
