we were upgraded for free to stay at the residences and were very impressed with the suite we had,the staff was excellent, the food was great. when we return we will be staying at the marival residence again guaranteed!! the only negative comments i have is that i was unable to use my cell phone or any other devices without paying for a hookup charge of $18 per day,and also the beds were hard but i had the staff put a matress cover on and solved that issue.

This was our first time in Mexico, and first time stay in a 5 star resort. And we LOVED it!

Background
Initially we purchased our trip to go to Marival Club & Resort. At the check in we were offered a free upgrade to Residences. I was trying to figure out what was the catch, but it simply turned out to be a pleasant surprise. At the Resort there are time share sales people jumping on you right after you check in. Tired after the plane, we had difficulties to get so much information (they are offering tones of incentives to get you to their sales presentation). So if you happen to check in at Marival Resort, just try to get to you room asap to save your time.

Check in and the room
When we were brought to Marival Residences, that's when the paradise began. A calm atmosphere really makes you feel that you are at a 5 star resort. The bell boys are taking care of the luggage. The lady at the reception brought us to the Wine bar, where we got the refreshing drinks and filled all the paperwork. Afterwards the bell boy quickly showed us around and brought us to our room.
The room is gorgeous!!! We got a 1 bedroom suite on the 1st floor. Well, you don't get the best view from the 1st floor, but in some rooms you can get from your terrace right to the adult pool. We weren't that picky about the view or the room overall as we weren't planning to stay most of our vacations inside. The suite is huge (for 2 persons): you get a kitchen, a living room with a plasma TV, bedroom with a king size bed and another plasma, 2 (!) bathrooms, and a balcony of course. There are also several small things I found cute and useful: they give the robes and the slippers, the hairdryer is powerful enough, there is also a small make up mirror, and the iPod dock was rather useful in our case. We used the coffee machine several times before getting to the restaurant for breakfast.
Drawbacks of our room: the shower jets weren't quite powerful enough and the drain was rather slow/clogged. The aircon in the living room was somewhat leaking inside. And the view isn't quite sweet, but that's being picky.

Territory and location
The territory of the Residences isn't that big, but you don't really need gardens in such a place when most of the time you are spending in water anyway. It's clean and neat, nice design. You get the main swimming pool in the middle, adult pools on the sides, sky lounge with another pool (!) at the roof of the building. Nice palm trees, no annoying insects. We were told that they spray some sort of chemicals on the territory to get rid of the bugs.
The location for some people could turn out to be a drawback. The thing is, Riviera Nayarit isn't big or full of life. If you want stores, cafes and restaurants, you'd better go directly to Puerto Vallarta. The hotel itself doesn't offer much of a nightlife either, but the Insu sky lounge bar was way enough for us. Another tiny thing that some could complain about is that it's not really a beach front hotel. You can walk 5 min. down the street to get to a public beach or, even better, take a short ride on a golf cart to Marival Resort, where they have a VIP beach club specially for the guests of the Residences. The golf carts are circling between two Marivals all the time, 24 hours. It's a distance of 10-15 min. walk or a 2 min. ride.

Service
The service is amazing. The waiters are always there to get any order, bring any drink or refill an empty glass. Always polite and smiling. Even staying at the farthest corner of the pool, we never got a problem getting a drink or a snack. And you get the same service at the beach too! In the beginning I was feeling disappointed that there is no swim up bar at the Residences, but you don't even need one! Looking at the crowded swim up bars at Club & Resort, I was feeling lucky having Wence taking care of us back at the Residences. The concierge is always available at the lobby to assist with anything. Oh, and they also clean up your room not only during the day, but also in the evening preparing it for the night: closing thew blinds, switching on the dimmed light and putting avay the bed cover.

Food and drinks
Best all inclusive food I ever had! At a first glance looks like with only 3 restaurants and 3 bars you won't have that much choice. You still have access to the restaurants at Marival Resort, and you can try those, but in fact you won't even want to. The first day we went to Marival Resort to "explore the territory". We stopped at pizza place to have a snack and a drink. And then we had a dinner at Omaggio. Oh my god, you can feel the difference! We never ate at the Resort again. The menus were always rich and all the choices were so attractive: stone seared tuna, duck confit, lobster stuffed poblano pepper, seafood ceviche, portobello burger - the list can go on and on! We had a lunch at the beach couple of times - nice choice of sandwiches and salads. The drinks were always mixed properly - no need to ask for an extra shot. Mojito, Tequila sunrise, Sea breeze, Long Island ice tea - all were a good quality cocktails.

Beach
When you get to Marival Resort, you understand why they keep a separate beach for the guests of Residences. At the Resort you need to take your towel from a beach concierge leaving your room number. At VIP beach club the towels are ready on the chaise longues simply waiting for you to arrive. You get all the amazing service, food and drinks, so it's totally worth it even if you have to take the "shuttle" from the Residences. The VIP beach is separated from the rest of the beach with a rope, so you don't get bothered so much by Mexican people selling stuff. The beach itself is clean. We had a "dirty" day after the storm, but it was all clean the next day. It's not like they can control what the ocean is bringing! There are no drops of the bottom when you get into the water, no stones either - just smooth sand. We loved the boogie boards available for free at the beach.

Summary
An awesome getaway for couples!

Pros:
- Amazing service
- Delicious food and drinks
- Nice clean beach
- Clean territory, spacious rooms
- Calm atmosphere (can be a drawback for some!)

Cons:
- No beach directly at the hotel
- Internet is not free (I'm being picky now!) - you need to pay 18$ for 24h, but you can always sneak to D-stock store, where they'll give you a password, so you can quickly check your emails or any other stuff.

I visited here with my boyfriend for 6 nights and it was a beautiful resort. We didn't mind not having a beach on-site since the beach at the sister resort is very close by and has a nice quiet section. For the price we got in the low season, I think this place is probably unbeatable. There are few children, a huge pool with a shallow/children's section and a deeper section where adults tend to be. The jacuzzi is in a nice secluded area with a man-made waterfall and relaxing music.

The restaurants were decent. Some foods had overwhelming sauces and/or too much salt but, overall, things were great.

The staff were obviously aiming to please and were very friendly. We didn't notice a difference in how we were treated whether we tipped or not, meaning that we were treated exceptionally regardless of tipping.

The gym has brand new equipment and is in a nice well-lit area. I definitely recommend using the gym while you are here!

The CONS
If I was paying full price, I'd expect a few more things, detailed below:

1. Better service at the restaurants: numerous times, different waiters would come up asking us for our order after the order had already been placed. This became annoying toward the end of the trip. I would prefer to have one waiter who knows what's going on at our table rather than 3 waiters for one visit.

2. Things on the menu should come as described. Several items were delivered without portions of the meal - e.g., missing sweet potatoes on an entree, missing compote on french toast, etc. However, when I pointed this out, the missing portion was promptly brought to the table.

3. Mild odor in our room. There was some sort of drainage or sewer odor in our room which wasn't overwhelming. I asked housekeeping to use room spray but had to ask every day. If I ask once for this, it should be repeated each day since, obviously, the odor is not going away.

4. Room service food quality desperately needs to be improved. Considering that this is the only portion of the resort you are paying the 10% fee for, I expected it to be at least on par with the restaurant food. We ordered a ribeye steak dinner with one steak medium-rare, the other medium. The steaks were probably a 1/4-inch thick and were well-done and very tough which was really disappointing. Room service breakfast smoothies and dessert were delicious though.

5. The beds are pretty hard and sound old (i.e. I could hear a spring on my side of the bed). Not totally uncomfortable, but this was truly surprising since it is a luxury resort.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not have a drainage odor

We loved a whole experience. Upon ck-in we got upgraded to residence and loved every moment of it. Even bracelets are not plastic ones. Food is wonderful and variety is more than I was able to taste. They do not have a buffet but this is an upscale place and there is always a place that is servings sit-down dinner or snacks, room service was fast too. They even have a variety of lactose free milk, soy milk and others.. To compare we went to Mediterranean restaurant in a sister hotel and decided to go back to our hotel for rest of the meal, even bread was not as fresh. The roof top restaurant/bar was a best feature of this property: sunsets on roof top next to the pool with drink and tapas (duck tacos are the best) just out of the world experience.
The D store next to spa is not included but has excellent coffee for about $3 and free internet with purchase. Apparently it is one of the best coffee places in whole PV and is popular with locals.
We were pulled into timeshare presentation and heard that in low season they have special price for locals (hotel was full of them) and they upgrade "white travelers" to the residence for advertisement. And later they tried to make us feel guilty for coming to presentation without buying their product. This was the worst part of our trip, it took me some time to get back in a happy mood. Do not agree to the presentation at all cost!!!
City tour was not impressive, just two stops in city and one of them is silver store and later up to mountains for lunch ranging from $13-60 per plate; Did not think it was worth my time. It felt more like a money making trip for locals.
But the residence was great, even lotion in bathroom is French, fresh juices, plenty of space, no reservations needed in restaurants, very calm even with some large families with children. Would like to come back soon. They are opening new property soon in the PV and one in Cancun.

This property is fabulous! The food is outstanding. The service staff was very good. We stayed in a Penthouse Suite with the rooftop plunge pool. Everything was sparkling clean. Humberto (at the Omaggio) made our dining experience a joy. He was very attentive, knew our likes and dislikes and he took care to make sure everything was perfect at our table even when we weren't seating in his serving area. We were the most relaxed we've ever been on any vacation!

Room Tip: Penthouse with the Plunge Pool is awesome!
