Great location away from the hustle and bustle of Banff

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Apr 3, 2018
Spent a very enjoyable 16 nights here recently for a ski trip - we rented a Junior Suite and found it suited our needs perfectly as a couple.

We had plenty of storage space with the two closets and a comfy sofa to relax on in front of the TV in the evenings after a hard day on the mountain.

Wi-fi was excellent - no problems streaming netflix and no issues with multiple people using the bandwidth.

Found that housekeeping were very good - we didn't need to ask for anything like clean sheets or towels as they were simply attended to, the garbage was taken every day, the coffee was topped up every day and the bathroom essentials when required. Laundry facilities were very useful.

We did not use the pool area so cannot comment - we spent our time at Banff Hot Springs instead when we needed some TLC for our acting muscles!

I note that noise can be an issue for some - this was not our experience but we had an outside corner/upstairs room and didn't have any concerns even during the busier weekends whilst staying.

Minor niggles - the place could do with some re-decoration but that in no way detracted from our enjoyment of staying here.

Our group of three families rented three two-bedroom condos for a spring break ski trip in March 2018. The condos offered enough space on the inside, with two full bathrooms and a downstairs living area and kitchen well separated from two small upstairs bedrooms. There were closets in the entryway, the kitchen, and the upstairs hallway but not in the bedrooms. There was a small cabinet in the bedrooms with a hanging rack and a couple of shelves, but not really any practical space to unpack the suitcases. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was adequate for basic food preparation. Several outdoor gas grills were available for guests.

Parking was adequate. Even though the resort was not full when we were there, we were not generally able to park adjacent to our condo units, possibly because the number of available spaces was reduced by packed snow and ice still on the ground.
This was not a problem for daily in-and-out, and we were able to find temporary parking for loading and unloading suitcases, ski gear, etc.

The wifi service in the units was excellent. Our entire group was able use their phones to access the internet, send and receive messages, share photos, even to watch movies on Netflix.

We ate breakfast in the restaurant one day. It offered a full buffet with eggs, bacon, pancakes, fruit, coffee, juices, etc, for $15. Both the food and the service were good. The restaurant was open in the morning at 8 am. We would have preferred an earlier opening time.

One family in our group had a first-floor wolf condo adjacent to the main lobby building. They found the noise from the guests in the upstairs unit intolerable. After two nights, they asked to be assigned to a different room. The hotel staff was reluctant to make the change, but eventually agreed to reassign this family to a second-floor condo unit for an additional $10 per day. The hotel did eventually offer a breakfast voucher to offset the additional cost. Overall, our opinion is that the hotel staff did not handle the problem well and that they could stand to improve their approach to customer service.

The location was convenient to the Trans-Canada highway. It is about a 15-minute drive to Sunshine Village and a 45-minute drive to Lake Louise. It is about a five-minute drive to downtown Banff and about a 20-minute drive to Canmore. The shuttle to town ran at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm while we were there, not every hour.

Our unit was close to the road and to train tracks. While traffic was very light in the area and there was very little road noise, we could hear occasional trains passing by from inside the unit.

Unless we were looking for more luxury or a more in-town location, we would come back again.

Room tip: Choose a second-floor unit away from the road

It was a typical time share condo so no surprises. Prompt help when the dishwasher broke. (Unable to fix). However the cleaning services were poor. I asked the housekeeper for clean sheets for the hide-abed when she was in the unit next to us. At midnight we noticed no sheets so we made do with blankets from the car. Because it is a resort most of the workers were from Australia. They seemed to have a general lack of interest in their work and the well being of customers.

Room tip: ask for a bottom floor unit if stairs are a problem

If you are headed to Banff for ski vacations or to explore the beautiful national park, you have a wide variety of hotels to choose from. If you travel with the family, by car and do not need to stay at the town center consider the Rocky Mountain Resort.
We have been staying here for many years, as our kids fell in love with skiing at Mount Norquay.
Accommodation: We always went for the two bed room condos. They have a kitchen, two bath rooms, two bed rooms and a spacious living area with a real fire place. You can park right in front of your door, there is a indoor and outdoor pool and a restaurant in the main building.
The staff has always been very friendly and helpful. The hotel provides a shuttle to downtown, if you do not want to drive by yourself.
Distances: It’s about 10 mins to the town center and you are on Trans Canada 1 in two minutes, which is convenient if you want to go to the ski areas at Norquay, Lake Louise or Sunshine.
Ski: If your kids want to learn to ski, Mt Norquay is the place to go. Talk to the ski school in advance, then camp, rentals and pass come as a package.
National Park: You need a park pass. You can buy it at the gates on Trans Canada 1. If you stay for a week consider buying the discovery pass, which should be the better deal. Further you have access to all Canadian NPs for a year.
Safe travels.

There are not very many choices of 4 bedroom condos in the Banff area, so our group of 5 adults and 2 kids chose the Rocky Mountain Resort because of the bedroom layouts and bathrooms.

Pros: The wolf condo was updated and the beds were comfortable, which is important after a full day of skiing and that we were staying for 6 nights. The location was great to the town of Banff and nearby resorts. We skied the Big3 over 5 days. The kitchen was pretty well stocked, although it would have been good to provide a nonstick pan for eggs and pancakes. We did make due with the stainless steel with lots of butter and oil and it was convenient to have a full kitchen to cook in some of the evenings. The table had comfortable seating for 7 people. We did not eat at the restaurant or use the shuttle service since we had a car. It was an easy drive into town and parking was not difficult in town. We did have an issue with the dishwasher the first day, but the management was quick to take care of the matter. Also was nice to have a little cleaning service daily if you needed to replace towels and trash pick-up.

Cons: We did use the pool area and spa. My husband felt that the pool area was in much need of a renovation, but the kids loved it because it was indoors and heated. The condo felt a little dark during the day, since the living and dining was on ground level, we kept the curtains closed for privacy. It's a little shame since the area is so lovely to not have a view of anything.

In conclusion, we enjoyed our stay here and it was good for a large group. But there seems to be a lot of options on the hotel row for 1 or 2 bedrooms that may be worth looking at for a smaller group.

Room tip: Wolf Condos are renovated

Would've given this place 3/5 stars (decent unit, wood fireplace, working kitchen, although far from town without regularly running shuttles) but was disappointed on how management handled a situation - on our second to last night we had an incident were a man tried to break into our unit while my brother and I were sitting on the couch. We watched him try to open our front door, and when he failed at that, he tried to break into our unit through the windows. I was able to scare him off and called the front desk immediately to let them know someone was on their premises and was attempting to get into people's units while they were inside. The person managing the front desk found the man walking around the premises and spoke with him, determined he was just drunk and walked to our unit from town (keep in mind we're about an 45 min walk from town in freezing weather). They got him a taxi and dropped him off at his place in town, never got his information, asked him what he was doing at the resort, or notified the police. When I called the manager the next day to speak with him and let him know I was uncomfortable with the situation and worried that the man might come back, he told me he disagreed with what I was saying and if I felt uncomfortable I could simply check out a day early, which we did. It's unfortunate, and I'm not stating that this location is necessarily unsafe, but I believe management should take the situation seriously when something like that happens.

Banff and the Rocky Mountain Resort are exceptionally safe. In spite of our reassurance of this, you requested to check out a day early. This request was immediately granted without penalty.
