Our family stays at Douglas Fir at least once a year. we have 2 children aged 7 and 5. The playzone and water slide keep them entertained for an entire weekend. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the condos were renovated recently. the most welcome additions were the extra TV's and the entertainment centre that you could hook up various devices to (gaming console. dvd, etc...). As always, we had a great time in the pools and found that our unit was particularly well stocked with dishes and cutlery. There were enough place settings for 10 people, which means we did not have to run the dishwasher as often.

We just returned from a trip to Banff and enjoyed a stay at the Douglas Fir Resort. It does not matter which condo you stay at, the views of the mountains and the cottage like feel of the chalets will keep you coming back for more. Access to complimentary firewood for the woodburning stoves adds to the mountain experience.

Second stay at Douglas Fir with my wife and kids, 13 and 10, and again had a great time:

- Service was excellent
- Room was clean and well maintained - loft in main building
- Kitchen more than adequate for holiday cooking
- Resort facilities perfect for a family with active children
- Excellent value.

The location is a little out of town (with a car this is no problem) but this is more than made up by the peace, quiet and great views.

For UK travellers I'd like to add some comments:

- Flights to Calgary in early April cost far less than February half term flights to Geneva/Munich etc
- Accomodation costs in Banff are less
- Snow is excellent (we skied fresh powder both on and off piste every day)
- Lift passes are more expensive
- There are no lift queues and other skiers are polite!
- Ski school for kids is first class.

I'd pick Banff over the Alps everytime, and with the rip off costs for the peak ski week in Europe it's a no brainer for me!

This hotel used to be very affordable and very nice. Now lately seems that after the highest ranking receive din reviews, it remains only very nice while the affordability is not anymore. But is like in each business once you manage to create a name and build a reputation, the price goes up. It is indeed a very nice hotel situated on Tunnel Mountain just above the Banff town site a 5 minute drive to downtown. We stayed at studio rooms which are very nice, with full size kitchen and fireplace. The resort has the biggest and the best waterpark in Banff. Also outside the have gas barbecues, and a tennis court. Also for small kids there is a indoor playground structure.

A lot of hiking trails around resort, and many times we seen from balcony deers and goats roaming trough resort area. I just wish the prices would be more affordable as they used to be in 140 CAD/night not 180-200/night.
