“The Best”
Reviewed 25 September 2012

If you only have two nights and three days to spend in the mountains in Canada, then go here and skip everything else (even though there are lots of other wonderful places to stay and things to see or do in Banff, Lake Louise etc.). Our family of five recently stayed and loved it.

The hike in - excellent.
The tea and snacks set out for us when we arrived - wonderful.
The Riverside cabin - perfect. The best at the lodge, we think.
The hike out to Merlin Lake - one of the best hikes we have ever had together as a family.
The supper served family style in the lodge - excellent.
The vibe, atmosphere and socializing in the loge - relaxed, special.
The breakfast and coffee - as expected, good.
The lunch items laid out for us to pack out - good.
The hike out (following an alternate route recommended to us at the lodge) - a top 10 hike!
The price - seemed high before we went; seems like a great value now we've been.

If we ever get the chance, I will return in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: The Riverside Cabin is wonderful for a family. It sleeps five comfortably. It's also beautifully...

I always joke around about making a fishing resume, with Skoki being an experience I would highly recommend.

The 11 km hike was tough but doable on my pudgey frame, with Decption Pass offering some fine vistas to take in. The lodge itself was rustic in a very good way. The service was oustanding, and the food was very good. It seems to attract a unique backcountry crowd. The price was worth it, with one being able to get away with simply having a light pack and a few clothes.

Fishing wise, Ptarmigan Lake offered some nice brook trout, with Red Deer lake being far tougher, but having a bigger brookie and cutthroat trout.

Room Tip: Bring your flyrod and check your fishing regulations.

Hi Donald,

Thank you for taking the time to review Skoki Lodge. Skoki offers a great base for fishing some of the more remote fishing locations. You can bring your rod and think about fishing while the staff take care of everything else. The staff pride themselves on hospitality and the quality of food, so they will be pleased to hear that you enjoyed them so much.

Sounds like you also had some luck with the fishing, congratulations

11 km of spectacular hiking over two mountain passes (very doable) and past turquoise lakes brings you to Skoki Lodge. The lodge is comfy and cozy with books to read on the day beds in the window or by the fireplace. Snacks and drinks are waiting upon arrival. Food ( 2 course breakfast, pack your own lunch buffet and 2 course dinner) is 5 star. Wine and beer are available for purchase. The hospitality of the Mitzel family and their staff is very warm, friendly, and helpful. Rooms are very basic, but comfortable. The only negative is the outhouse. Overall, a wonderful experience and highlight of the summer.

Few people get to see the Canadian Rockies the way you do when you ski into Skoki Lodge. The trek in is stunning. Challenging, but doable. I was caught in a brief white-out on Deception Pass on the way out and retreated back toward the Lodge until visibility improved. If Mother Nature unleashes her wrath while you are in the "elements," wait it out or retreat.

Leo and Katie are welcoming. They come with dogs and kids which makes them warm and friendly. The food is seriously top notch. The lack of water and electricity is a very small inconvenience for the rewards and priviledge of getting to and staying at Skoki Lodge, which is a National Historic Site.

I stayed one night at Skoki on March 20th. It is one of the nicest places I have ever stayed, mind you it is a bit rustic so if you need running water and electricity it may not be for you. If you can rough it a little it is totally worth your time. The hosts Leo and Katie were fantastic. Katie cooked what I must say is a five star dinner. The boys that worked at Skoki were excellent as well. I unfortunately cannot remember there names.

A warning the ski in to Skoki was quite demanding and not for the faint of heart. However it is totally worth it. I only wished I had stayed longer.

If you want to see the real Canadian wilderness, put on your back country skis and go to Skoki Lodge. You will see spectacular scenery and get a great workout skiing over Deception Pass. The downhill to the lodge is quite enjoyable. The lodge offers relatively comfortable lodging, but it does not have electricity or running water. I found it did not offer some of the amenities offered at other backcountry lodges such as guides, soft fluffy comforters, and warm water delivered to your door. The folks at the lodge did offer maps and supplied a lovely afternoon tea. This was quite welcome after the winds and snows were encountered on our journey.

Room Tip: The private cabins are a more quite option than the main lodge.

We spent 2 nights at Skoki and it is very scenic. The Lodge has excellent food and very helpful, friendly staff. We stayed in the Riverside Cabin and it was extremely comfortable. The skiing was great and the trail up is well marked. The staff were great at suggesting areas to ski in and had maps that were helpful. We will definitely go back to hike in the summer.
