“Amazing ski tour in the Canadian wilderness”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014

We skied into Skoki Lodge in January and absolutely loved it. The ski tour to the hut is a lot of fun. It follows a good trail starting in the Lake Louise ski resort and takes you out into the remote back country where you get spectacular views of the beautiful scenery. During the tour you really get the feeling of being in the wilderness!

When we arrived at the lodge, there was already delicious cake and hot drinks waiting for us. And that was followed by even more fantastic food for dinner and breakfast.

Skoki Lodge provides comfortable accommodation without the amenities of modern technology but still there is plenty of entertainment. We had a great time playing Scrabble and reading in the guide books about ski touring and mountaineering in the area. Also we met great people there and had loads of interesting conversations.

So, all in all a fantastic experience and highly recommended! We would love to go back.

Here are some tips that I find useful:

If you are an inexperienced ski tourer I would recommend to use proper AT skis and not light, skinny back-country touring skis. (Or simply use snow shoes!) AT skis are a fair bit heavier on the ascend but they allow you to lock the heel of your boot into the binding on the way down which makes the descent fun and easy - just like off-piste skiing in a ski resort. We saw a lot of people struggle on the downhill with their light back-country touring skis with most of them getting so frustrated that they took them off in the end and walked.

Also, stay in one of the cabins as the main building can be a little noisy and you can hear your neighbours snore.

I was lucky enough to ski into Skoki Lodge in March of this year. It was amazing! I felt invigorated by the fresh air and brilliant scenery of the Rocky mountains! it was a lot of exercise, about 5 hours to get there on touring skis. Once you arrive you are greeted with such warm hospitality in true Alberta fashion. The main lodge is cozy and everyone hangs out together chatting, playing cards or reading by the fire. We stayed in a private cabin, the same one Price William and Princess Kate stayed in on their visit! There is no running water or electricity, so it is a basin wash and an outhouse for the loo. I would recommend bring some mole skin or band-aids if you are not used to ski boots - blisters a common for this trek. I cannot wait to do a summer hike in to compare. A very special place. Highly recommend for any outdoor winter lover!

Incredible scenery, wonderful people, amazing food, a cold beer in front of a hot fireplace after a day of skiing....life doesn't get much better then that folks. The staff at Skoki make me proud to be an Albertan. They are the essence of Western hospitality, and wonderful ambassadors for Skoki and its rich history. We have been all over the world, and the three days we spent at Skoki (in our own backyard!) is one of the most memorable and pleasurable experiences we have ever had. Many thanks to all the staff and fellow guest - you were all amazing. We have already booked again for next year - countdown has begun!

17 of us skied in last weekend. The scenery, hospitality and food are just fabulous. We toured, ate healthy gourmet food, played games, ate, sang around the piano, ate, plus enjoyed a beverage or two. It was "simply the best". Thanks so much Nicole, Chelsea, Georgy, Mike and Leo.

Room Tip: The "fitness centre and swimming pool" are the great outdoors!!! :0)

I can't say enough about how perfect Skoki lodge is.

We stayed in the main lodge, and really enjoyed the family-style atmosphere, as well as the opportunity to meet other like-minded, adventurous travelers.

The meals at Skoki lodge are absolutely fantastic. During our stay, which was far too brief (only 2 nights) we had two of the most amazing dinners ever - with impeccable service from the staff.

The lodge is warm and cozy, even in the depths of winter.
This is a place that is absolutely magical, and the 11km hike in weeds out the weak, so your fellow Skoki Lodgers are fun, energetic, outdoorsy folks, which adds to the appeal! Can't wait to go back.

Some tips: Bring a pair of indoor slippers or heavy socks to "hang out in" before you head out for the day, and after you get back. Also, pack a headlamp for use in the evening / night - should you need to hop out to the outhouse, you'll be glad to have your hands free!

We just got back from a 3 night stay at Skoki Lodge and we are still reliving the magic of that place. If you are looking for a unique five star mountain hut experience then Skoki is where you must go. It was built in the 1930's and since then many people, both skiers and hikers have enjoyed it's hospitality (including royals the last of which were William and Kate in 2011).

If you are looking for modern conveniences, electronic stuff, wifi connection, a swimming pool, car access - you know... the typical stuff you get in hotels… then this is not the place for you. On the other hand if you are looking for a magical mountain experience appearing to be far from civilization (you have to hike or ski in depending on the season) and yet doable for all ages. We met 75 year olds skiing out and 8 year olds skiing in… then this is where you will want to go, for sure!!

We skied the 11 km from Temple Lodge over two passes and with the aid of the bright red stakes leading us along the trail we easily found our way to this wilderness paradise.

The food that is cooked by Chef Katie is of the highest quality… amazing that she can produce such delicious meals every day that you might expect to experience in a 5 star restaurant in the middle of New York. The supplies are brought in once a week by skidoo in the winter and on horseback in the summer. She has to order all her supplies using a VHF style radio. Amazing! Not only that - they accommodate special dietary needs… one of our party could not eat wheat and believe me, she ate as well as the rest of us and had as much as she wanted!

Katie and her husband Leo run a hotel that is fit for any king, queen, prince or princess (even if we are self proclaimed!). Their staff is knowledgeable, keen to share their local expertise for those of us who wanted to do day skis in the area and are warm and hospitable to all.

I was there 23 years ago and finally made it back this year… and believe me it won't be another 23 years before we go again (more like 23 months!).

Start saving your shekels for an experience you will never forget.
