Directly west of City Hall, there are lots of places to sit and relax.
During the winter, the reflecting pond becomes an ice rink.

Walking from our hotel to Calgary City Hall permitted us to walk through Olympic Plaza. This park was constructed for the 1988 Winter Olympics as a gathering place for people to experience the awarding of medals during the games. The park has a floor made up of red brick and during the construction phase, the citizens of Calgary were invited to purchase a brick which was engraved with their names. We were living in Calgary at that time and proudly purchased a brick.
This week while visiting Calgary I searched and found “our brick” and pleasant memories of the past flooded back to me. Now the park includes an outdoor skating rink which was filled with many skaters from toddler to senior enjoying the mild Calgary evening by skating downtown under the lights.

This was the high point of the brief history of this young city, when it hosted the Winter Olympics in 1988. The media winners were honoured here in the Olympic Plaza every evening. Today it is a beautifully maintained park and garden with space for people to relax. The Plaza has within it an interesting monument called the Famous Five, which are statues of five women who fought for women's rights and for getting women recognised as legal persons! A portion of the floor of the zplaza is paved with bricks on each of which is inscribed the name of a person who donTed $20 to the Olympic Games Fund to help finance the games!

We visited Calgary during the Stampede in July of 2017. The Olympic Plaza was quite close to our hotel. We walked to the park at least once every day to see what was going on. We checked our Stampede Schedules and headed to the park several times for events we HAD to see. The plaza is a definite stop if you are visiting Calgary. In the summer just sit and relax and when you get hungry or thirsty there are tons of eateries around. If you aren't in Calgary during the Stampede check with the locals it seems there is always an event being held in the Plaza. If there isn't grab a book and enjoy some quiet time in the city center.
