“Best Siu Long Bao in the City!”

If you go to Shanghai 4-5-6, one thing you will notice at almost every table is a steamer tray full of Sui Long Bao, or Shanghai Soup Buns. This dish is a specialty of the restaurant and almost everyone who comes orders at least one steamer. They are affordable and delicious, and never deflated or sad.

Shanghai 4-5-6 specializes in traditional northern Chinese cuisine, rich with stir fried vegetables, noodles, and rice. There is a selection of Dim Sum favourites that can be ordered off the menus, but the restaurant specializes more in family-style dishes. The hot clay pot soups are absolutely amazing, with traditional ingredients such as Chinese salt pork, glass noodles, home-made fish paste sticks, and homemade bean curd and sausage rolls. It is also one of the only places we can get traditional craving dishes like dan dan noodles and pea tips with garlic.

For those looking for the taste of traditional Chinese cooking, and an absolutely fantastic Sui Long Bao, give Shanghai 4-5-6 a try!

Eating at the Shanghai 456 is like returning to a Chinese restaurant of the 1960s. The decor is old and needs freshening. The small restaurant was 3/4s full of older -likely retired - Chinese men. The cuisine is Cantonese, more like home cooking than most restaurants. The staff were friendly and attentive. There was one elderly couple with (likely) grand kids that were well looked after.

Most "Chinese" food available in this country is just that: food of mixed ethnicity requiring air quotes to do it justice. That doesn't make it bad, just not particularly Chinese. Shanghai 456, while still offering some of the fried dishes white folks like me know and love, is geared to a much more honest experience of Chinese, and specifically Shanghai, food. The core of the menu are dim sum items, with a wide selection of dumplings. This may also be the only place in Edmonton to get Xiao Long Bao - soup dumplings. The menu is rounded out by a variety of other dishes that are hard to find at many other Chinese restaurants, including Dan Dan Noodles.

Best XLB in Edmonton hands down. All the other dishes I've tried have also been delicious, Shanghai Noodles, various dim sum offerings, pork belly, soups, etc. Great value and pretty friendly service. What keeps me coming back and motivates me to drive across the city is the XLB!
