what a place ! we walked up the trail, which was quiet hard but we loved the place, the scenery and the photos we took there. A must no doubt.
There are a lot of ways to visit the Columbia Icefields, including booking an organized bus tour, but we decided to drive there ourselves from the town of Jasper, about 100 kilometres to the north. Although it was June 21, the first day of summer, we encountered snow along the route - but not enough to close the road, thankfully. When we get to the visitor centre it is a bit of a zoo and crowded. Our objective was to walk up to the Icefields, to the terminus of the glacier, which we were able to do. But had we wished to take one of the organized trips onto the Icefields we would have had to wait five hours, as everything beforehand was booked. Still, we enjoyed the day and enjoyed the film and exhibits at the Centre.
We decided to tackle the hike to the toe of the Athabasca Glacier. It is geat to see and walk on a glacier. Ensure you have proper shoes depending on the weather because if can be steep.
Beautiful drive on the way to the Ice fields looking at all the scenery on both sides of the highway. When you reach the icefields you get driven up to the glacier by a very large vehicle called the all terrain Ice explorer, the driver tells you all about the area and the glacier while trying to spot the odd animal around the area. Once arrived at the glacier you get the opportunity to walk on the beautiful ice glacier with a chance also to sample the pure water of what the glacier has to offer. Beautiful views all around don't forget the camera. A Must Experience For All.
Right from the off (bus up to the Special all terrain vehicle) the team were super enthusiastic and informative. The Driver of our special vehicle (Frazer) needs a special mention for the information and great humour (for a Scotsman 😉)
Would definitely recommend this trip, top notch and awesome views of the many Glaciers.
