Why can’t people just be kind and helpful? We’re sore and tired 😪

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 3, 2024
Hotel and room were nice, but… The older woman at the front desk was incredibly rude, unhelpful, smarmy… just ugh, I don’t even know how to put our experience with her into words. It was 9 at night and we were told there is no other staff in the hotel so we wouldn’t get anyone to fix the air conditioning and there were no extra pillows in the entire hotel. It’s August 2nd, 28C outside, and hot in here. I’m pretty sure there’s a spare pillow kicking around as well, the hotel isn’t full. We have been staying at this hotel every year for at least 5 years when we stay in Nanaimo and don’t know what to think. We stay here mainly because my husband travels for work and his company uses this chain, but are seriously considering staying somewhere with working ac in the middle of the hot summer and where there is sufficient staff to help weary travellers next time we travel with our family to Nanaimo. Non-combative front desk staff would be nice too please 😅

We quite enjoyed our stay in room 314. Room was very spacious and had a big balcony. View was another building but that didn't bother us. We enjoyed the breakfast, egg omelet, sausages, waffles, toast, bagels, fruit, yogurt etc. The usual continental hotel breakfast. Free parking, smooth check in and out. Clean hotel and central location. Beds were comfy. No complaints here

Very basic hotel, they do not have any luggage storage (apparently a management decision since covid), breakfast is sausage links and cheese omelette patties that have been reheated from frozen. A few other things like grocery store bread for toast and a couple of apples and oranges.

Front desk is all screened off like the covid era, but also lots of prominent signage that they don’t keep cash on premise. Gives off the general feeling that there are some safety issues, perhaps for both staff and guests.

Rooms are only surface cleaned - lots of dust on light fixtures, stains on rugs, bathroom spaces not wiped that well, must smell, etc. Limited room decor, no paintings or anything. Very drab, beige space. My room had a small balcony, ash tray on table so maybe a plus if you smoke (although rooms are supposedly non-smoking). Back side of the hotel was relatively quiet, that’s the only positive thing I can say.

Limited amenities outside the room - no pool, no ice machines (at least not on my floor, and no indications where they are), only one slow elevator (use the stairs if you can).

Also in a weird area of Nanaimo right off the #1 highway that’s a bit of a dead zone. There are no restaurants, coffee shops, etc. that are all that close, besides an Italian/pizza restaurant that is only open in the evenings and most days only for takeout. If you’re of average mobility, you’re a 10-15 minute walk from the main action in the central harbour area. Relatively easy going to get there (downhill, some routes have stairs), but a bit of uphill walking back.

For the nightly rate charged compared to other properties - including the 2-3 major hotels that actually are in the harbour area - this is not a property I will ever be back to.

If you’re just driving through, need a place to put your head for the night, and every other place is booked then this might be an option. Otherwise I would avoid at all costs.

Room tip: Avoid this property unless you truly can’t find anywhere else to stay.

Services are being clawed back yet again with lousy cable, no ability to hook up personal channel box and now they've taken the freezers out of the mini refrigerators. What next, taking out the beds ?!

The older lady that works the day shift at the front desk has the poorest customer service skills. Quite rude for no particular reason. The room carpet was stained all over. Tried asking for a late checkout as it was clearly not a busy night on a weekday, so that I could breastfeed my newborn but I was denied that and not given any good reason as to why that was not possible on their end. Probably won’t be staying here again.

90% of the staff were really kind and engaging. My room on the fourth floor had two cockroaches. I was only able to kill one. But they did move me rooms at three in the morning and discounted me 20%. The check in woman in the afternoon could use a little bit of customer service review. The young man at the counter overnight was very helpful. Given the circumstances he was put through. Considering he told me he was very scared of insects and mice. He did very well.
