We stopped in for lunch ... grabbed a menu and a table ... then sent one person up to order. It was busy and we had read reviews that it can be tough to get a table. Very tasty food ... green curry chicken and pulled pork sandwiches. Really filling and tasty lunch without much wait.

Despite its pleasant interior and positive first impression, I left here wanting to kill myself. The young lady who welcomed me looked like I had pissed on her and made me feel as welcome as a pile.

I really would recommended going elsewhere unless you want to ruin your day. Oh, and by the way, the place doesn’t run tabs. I think that’s Nanaimo speak for “hello and welcome”

This place is fantastic for gluten-free diets, and for breakfast. Breakfast sold till 3 pm. Which is great for a student who needs food but wants a meal. Great price with a lot of food.

Gabriel’s is a casual, place your order at the counter type restaurant, but the food is delicious. Many different food options, from several eggs Benedict choices, to various rice bowl combinations, fresh salads and homemade soups.

It seems if you ask almost anyone from Nanaimo where the best spot is for breakfast, the answer will be Gabriel's. Usually one to avoid any place with “gourmet” in the name, this became our destination when our first choice was closed.

Upon arriving, you stand in line with the menu before placing your order at the front and taking a number to the semi-communal tables, where your order is delivered. If you're not a fan of rubbing shoulders with strangers immediately next to you, this may be a little too urban-hipster for you.

Fresh, sustainable ingredients are often sourced locally and find their way into the No. 2, a breakfast wrap with pulled pork, scrambled eggs, and veggies ($12.50), or the No. 5 traditional breakfast ($11), served with Hertel's bacon from Alberni. The wrap suffered from a pool of fat at the bottom of the tortilla which had been nicely contained by the paper wrapper, and tepid-at-best pan fries that had lost their fresh crust and were soggy. And nothing quite says gourmet like a small metal container of Heinz ketchup on the plate!

Caveats aside, the breakfast plates were largely okay, even if the slices of pineapple and blood orange seemed a little out of place with the café's local farm to table philosophy. The freshly squeezed delicious OJ was served in the ubiquitous Mason jar. Perhaps they might think about putting those jars to better use and rustle up some preserved local fruit for their plates, or some house-made ketchup...

Good food philosophy that gets a little lost in the mix.
