If you're cruising down Davie St, looking for a great meal,& you blink you you might miss Sumac Cafe. Its a delight !! Not you're usual run of the mill middle east fast food currently in the 'hood'...rather an owner who takes obvious pride in what he prepares..He's noticeably passionate about his fare & it shows. In conversation , you will find he has adopted some of his moms recipes. The chicken Kabobs are off the hook , greek salad, humus etc made with TLC. Prices are very reasonable & quality unmatched.
Its a gem!! don

This has quickly become one of my favourite neighbourhood eateries. If you're looking for a satisfying meal in an unpretentious gem of a restaurant, this is it. I visit at least twice a week and often get cravings. I've tried every dish and each one is simply delicious. The food is fresh, hearty, rich, and cooked with such intuition and attention to flavour. The chicken souvlaki and beef koftas are my favourites, and the hummus is some of the best I've ever tasted (even better than anything I've tried while travelling in the Mediterranean).

The space itself is humble, but Ali (the owner and chef) gives it a warm, friendly energy. He also has a natural talent for flavours. He riffs on traditional Mediterranean dishes and gives them his own culinary spin, so each dish is familiar but with something special.

The value for money is great. He serves so much food with each dish, I always leave more than satisfied.

I can't say enough about this mighty little eatery. Check it out for yourself!

Westend's little gem. Although the menu is limited they put much care and effort in making food taste delicious. We both had the kofta with rice, greek salad with side of hummus and tzatziki. Every bite was amazingly. Great service and much better than some of the other Mediterranean places around. Will be back to try the other items on the menu like the wraps and the eggplant stew.

Face it, there are a hundred places to eat in the west end. But the options for a causal meal is usually limited to fried fast food.

Sumac is a refreshing change. The place is small with half a dozen tables and a counter where they assemble the dishes.

It is Mediterranean but not Italian. The dishes are more middle eastern with fresh hummus, tzatziki sauces.

The menu is small but I think that is fine. Better Greek salad compared to the Greek restaurants up the street on Davie.

We ordered Beef kofta is basically Iranian style rolled meat, in a shape of sausage but not in a casing. Came with a nice salad, rice.

Meatballs in tomatoes with saffron basmati rice and Greek salad was a variation on the meat with sauce.

You order at the counter but if you are dining in, they will bring the food to you table.

Friendly staff. Next time you are hungry and you want some fresh, casual food, try this little place.
