Checked into the hotel fine...who knew when the hotel staff came to my room to deliver a thank you gift for bringing 85 people to the city of Vancouver they would STEAL my laptop and SLR camera.....My room was rifled through and stolen from 2 different bags....who do they think is responsible...the guest of course....the night mgr Danielle won't check the security camera cause she is too busy...I guess she is okay with a thief working here....haven't even slept here yet....

This is probably my 5th stay at the Westin Grand (having tried several others in between) and I am moved to write as this is a hotel/residence that has really 'come of age'.

I first stayed in about 1998 (probably a year or so after it opened) and this end of Robson Street felt a 'little out of it'. In the intervening 14 or so years Yaletown has come of age and the hotel is very much in the heart of it.

Designed in the shape of a Grand Piano (hence the name) it has about 30 floors and almost all suite style accommodation. Each suite or studio is well equipped with a moreoless full kitchen and all of the usual Westin goodies (Heavenly bed, Heavenly shower etc).

The 'Hidden' bar & lounge on the lobby level serves breakfast buffet, lunch and light dinner with an imaginative menu and good service. After a long flight from London a simple plate of fresh asparagus with grilled chicken and a glass of pinot blanc is a perfect dish to combat jet-lag. The 'super-foods' buffet breakfast is packed full of fruit, berrys, smoked salmon and other goodies to set you up for the day.

Only gripe are the elevators which can be a little slow when the hotel is busy but all in all a great base for business or pleasure

Room Tip: The corner one bedroom suites deluxe '00' rooms have a great view over Canada Place to the mountains beyond but frankly all of the rooms have a good aspect and the only decision is size based on price.

We stayed here when going to see Gonzaga vs Hawaii basketball at Rogers Arena. Nice, clean, central. Right on Robson street for those that love to shop/dine. Big comfy beds and extremely clean bathrooms. Nice outdoor heated pool. Great for business trips, a little spendy for family outings. Parking is going to cost also. Front desk staff is truly professional, even let us check in 2 hours early.

Vancouver can be an expensive city, especially given the strong Canadian dollar. However, one way to save while still staying in a beautiful hotel is to get some groceries and prepare some of your own meals.

This is all found in the Westin Grand, which, I think is an all-suite hotel...very unusual for a Westin. Also unusual is the floor plan of the hotel. Each floor is shaped like the outline of a grand piano. So, each suite is really a bit different from the others. However, I think all include a small kitchenette (including dishwasher, dishes, cutlery, etc.).

And, since downtown Vancouver is a place where people live/work 24 hours, just down the block is a grocery with most of what you might need. I still highly recommend sampling some of the great restaurants in Vancouver, but you can balance a fancy meal with something casual at lunch or breakfast.

As usual, I could go on about how terrific and welcoming many people in Vancouver are (they did host the Olympics a couple of years ago) and how wonderfully diverse the city is, but for the Westin Grand the key remains the people.

I was fortunate enough to have Gina greet me at the front desk. She is friendly, intelligent and a good source of helpful information. Even the valet at the small motor court downstairs was on top of his game, while being very efficient.

The hotel is a few blocks to several attractions and across the street from the architecturally unique library and a TransLink stop, from where you can easily reach many other parts of the city.

Especially if you are a Starwood Preferred Guest visiting Vancouver, I would highly recommend the Westin Grand as your first choice in Starwood hotels.
