Our family of four including two young girls ordered six plates to share and were pleasantly stuffed. This place is definitely fit for foodies. Everything was super fresh, original, and tasted delicious. We enjoyed vegetable potstickers, pork dumplings, a salad including chickpea tofu which was out of this world, "kick a*s duck fried rice" (true to its name), wild caught sockeye salmon, and a surreal spicy kale vegetable special with fresh ginger. The place was packed but we, fortunately, arrived moments before the rush hour at about 6:15 PM on a Tuesday night.

First of all, I should say that none of what we ate at Bao Bei could be described as bad. It was just that it never lived up to the expectations set by its reputation and its prices. We had the tartare, some dumplings, fried rice, mantou, shao bing and marinated eggplant. I enjoyed it all, but no more than I would have enjoyed similar dishes at a much lower price point. It was all a bit weak and bland to be considered above average.

Style over substance springs to mind when I think of Bao Bei. The ambience is good and the dishes are neatly put together. However, there's nothing outstanding about the flavours on offer. And, to me, that's the most crucial aspect of Chinese cuisine. This place is popular because it's cool; not because of the food. Save your money and go elsewhere.

N.B. No complaints about the service. The staff were attentive and friendly.

When we explained to our hotel concierge that we wanted to sample a wide range of Asian cuisine during our stay, he highly recommended Bao Bei for something a little different. Spot on! For overall fun experience -- vibrant atmosphere, great food and attentive staff --- Bao Bei delivered.

The menu is eclectic and intriguing without being gimmicky. Our knowledgeable waitress walked us through the selections and gave a thumbs up to personal favorites from our hotel: the Taiwanese sausage and mantou. We added some vegetables, a recommended local wine, and were more than happy. Dinner here could get rather spendy if you get carried away with experimenting, but there are great options for anyone's budget. We also appreciate that Bao Bei carefully sources its meats (ethically raised, no hormones/chemicals) and emphasizes local produce and wines.

What a great place to visit. We got a table straight away; atmosphere was great, service was very good and the food (although a limited menu) was exceptional.

As a family of 6, we have eaten many Chinese meals, this one was unique and exceptional. The stir fried rice (with mint) was amazing.

Contrary to other reports Bao Bei took cards (all except AMEX).

If you are in Vancouver, I strongly recommend visiting.

Coming from North Carolina which only has Americanized Chinese food, we were hankering for the real thing. We come from Boston originally where there is very good Chinese food. This restaurant is really fusion Chinese. We ere very happy with our food but we are still looking for Chinese food! Our server was friendly and efficient. There is a "bistro like" vibe here. We never have dessert at Chinese restaurants. We both wanted a "sweet" so we tried the parfait which was a multi layer, multi taste sensation custard. It was yummy.
