I paid extra for a corner room with a harbour view, and I have to say that the view was incredible and worth the upgrade.
The room was decent, nothing major to say about it really.
Unfortunately the reception and check in experience were a bit of a let down.
- On arrival, I was not notified that I needed to use my card to operate the elevator. My card wouldn’t work, but after trying it for a couple of minutes, when I got back out to ask at reception there was already nobody there. I was trying to figure out by myself how to get it to work, and eventually somebody else got in and their card worked to get me to my floor. I then realized when I got to the room that the card wasn’t working at all, so I had to go back downstairs with my bag to get a new one, call for a new card and wait for somebody to come back to reception. If they had just mentioned that the card was needed for the elevator, I could have got a new one straight away when it didn’t work the first time.
- The second or third night that I stayed there, the door was locked and I couldn’t get back in. The receptionist happened to be passing and told me as if it was my fault, that the doors were locked after 10pm- how about you tell people about these things at check in?
- The room had a nespresso machine which would be nice, except there was no milk and not even a bottle of water in the fridge - I would much prefer that, especially during a heatwave! They have a bottle filling station at reception, which again would have been good to know at check in.
- This is a small thing but would make a big difference- the view and balcony are gorgeous, but I had to sit on the floor to enjoy it in the mornings if I wanted to sit outside. Some inexpensive patio furniture would go a long way.
- The dealbreaker: on my 2nd last night, I got back to my room at about 11pm to find a bag of garbage outside the door. I called reception to let them know, and they said they would send somebody up right away. I was disgusted to find that it was still there the next morning, and I had to stop by reception on my way out to tell them again. If the cleaning staff were off duty when it was reported, then the reception staff should have taken care of it instead of leaving somebody’s garbage in the corridor all night until it was pointed out again.
Honestly I was out and about for most of my time in Vancouver so I really just needed somewhere central to sleep, but for anyone who wanted to spend time hanging out at the hotel I can’t guarantee that it would be the right fit. As I said, the view was out of this world and it’s a fantastic location but overall the experience was not that great.
