“Clean, quiet, great location, welcoming staff.”
Reviewed 24 October 2011

We had a brilliant stay at the Buchan. Staff friendly and helpful, very knowledgable about the local area and even allowed us to extend our stay by an extra night. The front room is full of pamphlets, maps and information about what to do in Vancouver. The staff were available 24 hours a day and were always polite. Our room was big, clean, quiet and comfortable. We had cable tv with a vast amount of channels and fast wifi Internet. There was a walk in wardrobe and drawers for storage. We used the shared bathroom which was always available and clean. Room service was brilliant, the cleaners are very friendly and always made sure we were provided with clean towels and linen. We also used the washer and dryer in the hotel which was modern and powerful, very cheap.Free coffee and tea in the morning was helpful, and enjoyable.

The location was the best part, a very short walk from stanley park, Robson street and English bay. We walked every where.. Very easy to get to from the greyhound, take the number 19 bus.

Absolutely brilliant, thank you for a great week.

We Aee a young couple travelling the USA on a budget. We LOVED our stay at the Buchan, amazing value for money. We checked in and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, even allowing us to extend our stay by an extra night and offering maps and information about what to do in Vancouver. The staff were always helpful and friendly, they re there 24 hours a day. Our room was spacious, clean, quiet and comfortable. We had cable tv and wifi Internet. There was plenty of storage space for clothes and suitcases. We had a shared bathroom which was always vacant and clean. Room service was also excellent, clean towels and linen on a regular basis. Free coffee and tea in the morning and a room full of information, guides and newspapers etc.

The location was superb, minutes from stanley park, Robson street and English bay. We walked every where, including downtown, Yaletown, gas town, china town, Kitsilano and Granville island. Very easy to get to from the greyhound, take the number 19 bus.

Absolutely fantastic, thank you for a wonderful, wonderful stay, we will be back!

This place was great! I felt like I was staying in a piece of history. The room and hotel itself is very basic and old, but well maintained and very clean. It also has an exceptional location in the best neighborhood in Vancouver.

No elevator! Not even one! There are also stairs leading up from the street to the lobby. No ramp. Just a note that may be important to some travelers.

By "shabby," I mean the furniture is really old, and was not great quality to begin with. Think: chain motel style. However, the bed was firm, the pillows were acceptable, and everything was very clean. There was a ceiling fan (no AC). My room had a private bath. The shower had fantastic water pressure (hooray!). The towels were big and fluffy (unlike motel quality!). It was quiet. The staff were all helpful and friendly.

I chose this hotel for two nights because I wanted to spend a long day in Stanley Park. For that, the location was ideal. I was able to walk to dozens of really good ethnic restaurants on Denman Street -- where there are also many bike rental places. If you walk to the end of Denman, you can turn south and walk along the water all the way to the ferry that goes to the Public Market on Granville Island. A great walk!

Stayed there for one night only, thank goodness. We had what was called an executive double room for $154. For the price, I expected better accommodations. The beds were horrible. You could almost feel the springs through them - that's how old they must have been! Also, our private bath was SO small, that nether my husband nor I could enter the space next to the tub/shower where the sink was, without turning sideways! Our shoulders were literally too big to get straight in.

I stayed at this hotel several times and have always had a pleasant stay. This is your typical european style hotel. There are no frills but just the basic necessities that a normal hotel guest needs. I've stayed here several times over the years and have always had great iteractions with the staff. They have always been very accomodating. Two things I would recommend to the hotel is to update the communal shower/bath areas and replace the bedspreads which have been there for as long as I can remember. A traveler won't regret staying here if they aren't expecting the Ritz.

The Buchan Hotel was very conveniently located and in a quaint, lovely neighborhood. We walked and took buses everywhere! The downstairs living room was big and cozy with tea and coffee available all day long. The staff was friendly and very helpful in answering questions about Vancouver and its sights. The rooms were very basic, but clean, with shared toilets and showers down the hall. In June, it was pricey for what we got, but they are totally honest about what the room rates include.

Room Tip: Try to get rooms not facing the streets and closer to the toilets.
