I took my mother for afternoon tea at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver to celebrate her birthday in mid March and as expected we had a fabulous time! I called the week before to make the reservation for a Saturday at 1 pm, but they did not have any openings until 1:45 pm which was fine with us.
We arrived about 10 minutes early and expected to wait, but were instead shown to a lovely table at the railing with two wing back chairs-so comfortable! Our waiter came over to give us the tea menus and fill our water glasses. Once we decided (Fairmont Earl Grey for me and Fairmont Orange Pekoe for her) our tea pots were brought to the table filled with loose tea in a strainer and very hot water-if the water isn't hot enough the tea will not be as good, and after a short time to steep we poured our tea-perfection! The china is very colouful made especially for the Fairmont Hotels and coupled with the silver teapots and cream and sugar service makes the experience even more special-Victorian elegance worthy of such a grand hotel!
The staff were very busy and walked smartly between tables, but we did not wait long for our tiered tray of goodies! The staff was very efficient without being rushed and brought hot water refills regularly for our teapots. The sandwiches were excellent-smoked salmon, ham and Brie croissant, curried chicken salad, watercress and cucumber-delicious! The scones were still warm and moist when cut open, heavenly with the clotted cream and jam!! The final pastries were a mini chocolate cupcake, lemon tart, and two others which I can't recall.
We were hungry due to skipping breakfast (on purpose so not to spoil our appetite!) and we ate everything! The amount of food was just right for us, but many people had to have some of the treats packed up as they ran out of room!
The service throughout our meal was excellent, and I felt the cost was very reasonable at CAD 36.00 + tax per person. I have been to tea at many places around the world and tea at a Fairmont Hotel is always a great experience. We are lucky enough to live in Vancouver and can come for tea often, but is always a "special event". A do not miss for locals and visitors alike!
