“Afternoon Tea in the 900 West Lounge”
Reviewed 28 March 2012

I took my mother for afternoon tea at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver to celebrate her birthday in mid March and as expected we had a fabulous time! I called the week before to make the reservation for a Saturday at 1 pm, but they did not have any openings until 1:45 pm which was fine with us.

We arrived about 10 minutes early and expected to wait, but were instead shown to a lovely table at the railing with two wing back chairs-so comfortable! Our waiter came over to give us the tea menus and fill our water glasses. Once we decided (Fairmont Earl Grey for me and Fairmont Orange Pekoe for her) our tea pots were brought to the table filled with loose tea in a strainer and very hot water-if the water isn't hot enough the tea will not be as good, and after a short time to steep we poured our tea-perfection! The china is very colouful made especially for the Fairmont Hotels and coupled with the silver teapots and cream and sugar service makes the experience even more special-Victorian elegance worthy of such a grand hotel!

The staff were very busy and walked smartly between tables, but we did not wait long for our tiered tray of goodies! The staff was very efficient without being rushed and brought hot water refills regularly for our teapots. The sandwiches were excellent-smoked salmon, ham and Brie croissant, curried chicken salad, watercress and cucumber-delicious! The scones were still warm and moist when cut open, heavenly with the clotted cream and jam!! The final pastries were a mini chocolate cupcake, lemon tart, and two others which I can't recall.

We were hungry due to skipping breakfast (on purpose so not to spoil our appetite!) and we ate everything! The amount of food was just right for us, but many people had to have some of the treats packed up as they ran out of room!

The service throughout our meal was excellent, and I felt the cost was very reasonable at CAD 36.00 + tax per person. I have been to tea at many places around the world and tea at a Fairmont Hotel is always a great experience. We are lucky enough to live in Vancouver and can come for tea often, but is always a "special event". A do not miss for locals and visitors alike!

Location, perfect. Each staff member we interacted with was really friendly and anticipated anything we might need; very professional service.

Our Gold Floor stay was made even more amazing by an great team. Rejean is a star. We stayed for four days and knew we were in very good hands. Continual recommendations on where to go and see. In the lounge we were treated to great food (and drinks). So clean. Everyone attentive. Amazing! Nice to have those little extras including turn-down service, and Gold Floor check-in/check-out.

So many great perks to our stay: the bicycles available for use on the sea wall, Mavis the hotel dog, and coffee available at every turn (room, lounge, with wake-up calls)... kept us fueled for doing it all.

The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver really does have a classic, stately feel to it. We will definitely return. Truly great service. Amazing stay.

Room Tip: Gold floor well worth it. Great 24h gym. Join the President's Club before arriving: includes BM...

Worth the trip to Vancouver to stay here. Centrally located and just about everything is within walking distance. Lots of local restaurants to satisfy any palate. Nothing like coming in after a day and having a cup of tea and relaxing in the lounge. This hotel reminds you of what it used to be like to travel, where you are a valued guest.
My only negative was the front door staff who did not take my luggage out of the taxi. Other than that.... lovely.

Wonderful old hotel with excellantly appointed rooms with fine linens and comfortable beds. Mobile checkin worked perfectly had my room at 11am. Great location for walking in the heart of dt Vancouver. Rooms are impeccably clean.

Staff are very accommodating. Mind you one expects that at a Fairmont.

Near Canada line that does to airport.

I did not stay at this hotel, but reserved (and paid for) a room for a colleague from out of town who stayed there from March 19 - 23. For two consecutive nights of his stay, the hotel's fire alarm system went off - without a fire, during the middle of the night.

The first night, my colleague spent an hour in the lobby between 2 and 3 a.m. along with many other guests. The staff were unprepared for this alarm and did not know where the keys were to provide the Vancouver fire fighters who responded with access to the alarm system. Nor could the hotel staff properly direct guests to the correct stairs to return to their rooms (since this is an old hotel there are many staircases that go to different parts of the building) when the elevators were shut off as a result of the false alarm.

As bad as the immediate response of poorly trained staff was, the total absence of any acknowledgement to guests staying at the hotel was simply unacceptable. Not even a note of apology was prepared and distributed to guest rooms. This was repeated the next night, between 11 pm and midnight. Again no acknowledgement! Were the hotel management all on holiday?

I have always booked our VIP guests into the Hotel Vancouver, but will have to reconsider based on this experience. Somebody needs to take the responsibility for emergency management and service recovery much more seriously than was the case in this snafu.

This hotel has every thing you could wish for in a hotel ! First of all the rooms are very comfortable and in a generous size. The building it self is an experience and beautiful. Very reasonably priced. It's in the middle of downtown Vancouver making it very handy and easy to go to the best shops in town that are just around the corner.
The staff is extremely helpful and genuinely nice - very quick to help.
Had breakfast and dinner at the restaurant and food was good and well priced. High tea is available in the piano bar and looks very fancy !

We've been coming to the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver on and off for the past 12 years. This is one of the classic hotels in all of Canada and was once owned by the Canadian National Railway. The entire hotel exudes a feeling of class and history. Our stay this time was on the eighth floor overlooking Georgia Street looking west. It's far enough above the street that one can hardly hear the hustle and bustle of what's going on at street level. The rooms are large and very comfortable with all the amenities you would expect from such a prestigious hotel. The pool area is large and the fitness studio has a complete set of machines for most workouts. At the lobby level, there is Griffin's restaurant that serves complete breakfasts as well as buffets. The lounge is extremely comfortable and has live music nightly. And don't forget the dogs. There are two yellow labradors named Mavis and Beau who are the unofficial ambassadors for the hotel. They roam the lobby level greeting the patrons. You can even take them for a walk if you feel the urge. All in all, it was a wonderful stay (again) and we look forward to our next visit to Vancouver.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing either Georgia or Burrard Streets.
