For what seems like ages friends have encouraged me to enjoy a repast at the Kaya Malay Bistro. I was only a 1/2 block away and still had time on my parking meter so I decided upon lunch at the Kaya Malay Bistro. The Singapore Laksa is an excellent choice for a person not familiar with Malaysian fare expecially if one enjoys coconut milk, noodles and tiger prawns.

We purchased an "All You Can Eat" coupon deal and had a wonderful lunch yesterday. $15 per person includes GST. There are lots of choices of very genuine Malay food. They offer small dishes which are really good so that we can try more different food. We strongly recommend: Fried spicy calamari (****), Rendang beef (*****), Phad Thai noodle (*****), Char kuey teow (****), Pumpkin mixed mushroom curry (*****). Their desserts are also wonderful, Durian gelato is the best.

Made reservations at 8 pm for dine out 2018. Upon arrival, we see a huge line up of people waiting to be seated. Turns out, everybody in that line up had reservations and some people had already been waiting 40 minutes. We called the restaurant saying we were outside and we were rudely told to just stay in line. In the 30 minutes of us standing there, we only saw one server come out. All the empty tables were left dirty and NO ONE had any food on their table. The part that got us the most, was if you go onto open table, they were still accepting reservations at 815!!! We understand that dine out is an extremely busy time, but if you cannot handle the pressure then please don't take part in it...Was excited to experience this restaurant with my family but don't think we'll ever come back. Not a good look for this restaurant.

Unfortunately, the sentiment was felt by most of the customers we talked to tonight. Perhaps with Dine Out and completely packed restaurant, both the wait staff and the cooks were completely overwhelmed.

We waited for 30 minutes for our table. Our water took 30 minutes to arrive. Our appetizers arrived another 15 minutes after our water. Our entrees took another 20 minutes after our appetizers, and finally our desserts took another 20 minutes. We could not understand why even the bill itself took another 15 mins. We ended up having to go to the front to get the bill - when up at the front, the wait staff did not seem to be that busy. Total time from the lineup (7:30pm) until we paid was 2.5 hours.

We talked to the table behind us. They came at 6pm. Their meal took 3 hours and they all decided to leave and not wait for their desserts. As we were seated downstairs, next to the stairs, customers who came from the upstairs section were also complaining about the service as they were coming downstairs.

The taste of the food was decent. However, the rice was undercooked. The seafood portion of the entrees was also cold - similar to take out that had been sitting for a while. The portion sizes overall were very small.

They gave us a discount due to the wait times. Thus, the 2 star rating.

We had lunch at Kaya Malay Bistro as part of Vancouver Dine Out promo. The restaurant decor was very plain with no real feel of Malaysian decor however we didn't primarily come to the restaurant for the decor. The food & service were excellent. The restaurant opened at 11:30 AM and within a hour was full. Appetizers came fairly quickly with tasty, sampler portions. We ordered both protein (beef & chicken) combo appys which were shared. There was just enough of each 3 course tapa to enjoy and leave room for the entree. We also ordered both of the protein (chicken & beef) 4 course entrees which were also shared. There was a nice balance/variety of entrees in each of the courses. We have dined at many Malaysian restaurants in the Lower Mainland and I would highly recommend Kaya Malay Bistro for their tasty and authentic food.
