“Quality and Value with a Greek twist”
Reviewed 7 January 2012

Excellent food with Greek authenticity. The quality and taste of all the ingredients was exceptional. If you like Greek food, you will struggle to find a better Kleftiko anywhere, even in Greece.

“Great food, great people. You will be very pleased you chose Characters.”
Reviewed 3 January 2012

We liked the food - my son and I had the Platter for 2, which contained a bit of everything. The mousaka was the best we've ever had. The spanikopital - excellent also. Our friend had the lamb roast - very tender and flavorful. To top it off, we had tix for the Canucks/Sharks game and on the tickets it said game time at 7:00 PM. While we were eating the owner turned on the tv and the game had started at 5:00 PM. Not sure what happened. But, he gave us a ride to Rogers Arena when we finished dinner - we missed the first period, but it could have been worse. We will never forget the excellent meal and kindness of Jimmy and his wife. They went above and beyond the measure of service. We are looking forward to returning and spending more time with them.

“Good Greek food & friendly service”
Reviewed 28 June 2011

Contrary to the mixed reviews below, we dined at Characters Tavern on 24 June (our last night at Vancouver) and we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner there. Perhaps they had changed the chef since 2010.

The husband and wife owners were friendly and we enjoyed banters with them. They explained all the dishes and we were happy with the generous portions of Greek dishes. The meats were succulent and salad fresh.

A lady on the next table mentioned that her potato slice was hard and the owner brought her a friend potato slice within minutes.

Would certainly recommend this restaurant to our friends and family. And the prices were very reasonable too! $10-15 for a main.

“There are better choices”
Reviewed 30 November 2010

As others have noted, the owners are Indian and seem quite nice--but the Greek dishes, at least, are hard to recognize as Greek, and not worth trying. We dined here on a family vacation, as our introduction to Vancouver's dining scene--not recommended.

“Drinks after hours!”
Reviewed 14 October 2010

This is an average, yet overpriced restaurant just a block away from the HI on Burnaby Street. The places saving grace was that when I was taken there at around 2 am sober, I left at 4 am very tipsy! The trick I found out was to arrive just after last call at the bars and order a drink. Once you've started you can keep asking for the same thing over and over again.
The service is horrible and the manager/ waitress scared me but the food was actually really good and after the amount of booze that was consumed we needed it. The Calamari and the Garlic Bread were amazing and I did go back for lunch a couple days later to have them.
