A return to an excellent restaurant!

Just as I remembered, a popular place to dine. Very busy, very trendy on a Saturday evening.

Service was very attentive, food superb, a limited menu but something for everyone!!

The wild boar pastrami with mushrooms, a very nice treat. Same for the scallops and the complementary spaeztl.

The mains, schinztl, roulattten, sturgeon and a very well done and presented chicken dish...all excellent.

The wine, a fine Okanagan Pinot noir hit the spot.

No room for the desert menu tonight.

A reputation well deserved!!

Hustling bustling Gastown is turning into quite the foodie destination. But if you walk past the welcoming doors of Bauhaus you've simply gone too far. Back up Charlie, you will miss out on one of the best experiences in Vancouver, maybe even Canada…..Especially if you want to experience a level of dining that, so far, is not found in Canada.

There are no Michelin star restaurants in Canada. Their are a select few that have the potential, but since the Michelin testers haven’t graced Canada none exit here yet. Bauhaus definitely deserves one.

Service is warm, welcoming and they know what they are talking about! Great wine list, slanted to German wines, of course, but not the ones you will find easily. These are the ones I am used to drinking when I dine in the Mosel or in the Pfalz. Great collection of Canadian wines too.

Let's get to eating shall we? Well it starts with crusty bread and butter, always a must. Bread is part of the holy trinity for us Germans. Bread, alcohol and wurst is simply part of our staple life. For the Italians its wine, pasta and cheese. Dinner started with an amuse bouche, a little welcome from the kitchen. We tried a lot of plates today, my partner and I shared the 6 course tasting menu which included Fois Gros, Mushrooms with Gnocci and Sunchokes that hit all the right notes, could have devoured a large plate, simply delicious. Halibut was amazing and the beef tartar was also the best I've had. Perfect balance, nice and finely cut. Most others I've tried are too coarsely cut and it's like eating a plate of sour pickles with a touch of meat thrown in for good measure. Devastating every time!

We also shared some of the A La Carte plates including the smoked duck pastrami ( quite a show stopper) sturgeon and of course, a German favourite, the roulade. The only way you could eat it is with red cabbage, bread dumplings and lots and lots of Demi sauce! That was the only thing it needed.... more sauce! It reminded me so much of home that it took me back to childhood times eating my dad's red cabbage and saucy roulade.

Dessert, we tried one of each. Honestly couldn't decide which I loved the best. None of them were overly heavy or sweet. The were beautifully plated and intricate. Chocolate was delicious but I think the green apple in white chocolate dome was perhaps my favourite. The green apple sorbet inside was tart and refreshing, hinted with celery and it married the white chocolate like William has Kate.

Delicious experience and now I do not need to fly across the Atlantic just for modern European Star dining. Keep it up Bauhaus! Till next time.

This was our second time at Bauhaus. Food and service were as excellent as we remembered. We are big fans of the schnitzel, spatzle, and roulade. Beer and wine list are excellent.

Excellent in all respects. Venue is a refurbished old hotel in the Gastown area.
Service was excellent and prompt. Everyone had a different meal and they were all happy with their choices. The wine list was also good and we had a bottle of a very fine Austria wine!

Restaurant feel like in Europe with an amazing tasting menu that changes a few times a year, if it's your first time, go for the menu with wine pairing.
The German dishes are traditional with modern twists. Some are lighter then the originals from your German grandmother, what pleases the healthy Vancouver yoga crowds.
And oh, don't for get the cocktails. 4-5 house cocktails that never disappoint.
Say hi to the Owner Uwe, he makes his rounds most nights. A unique german character.
