About 90 minutes West of Victoria, there is not much on the South coast of Vancouver Island other than lots of trees, windy road and wonderful country. Just past the village
of Jordan River (one cafe and not much else) are the turn-offs for China Beach. Unlike most of this rugged coastline, this is a real beach with real sand. It's long, mostly empty
and absolutely beautiful. Please note, however, that this is the NW Pacific Coast and liable to inclement weather, so choose your day.

This is a bit of a drive but totally worth it! After you walk about 15 minutes down a well looked after path, you walk out into paradise. You feel miles away from the rest of the world (cause you kind of are). It is so relaxing for Mom and fun for the kids. Great photo op!

We were there end of November. It was cold and wet but there were surfers out there. We parked and watched the surfers. It was fun to see them It's a beautiful place to take a break.

If you are travelling on the Island and cannot make it to Tofino, China Beach is a nice alternative. It is on a much smaller scale, of course, but the beach is stunning and the trees magnificent. It was about a 15 minute walk down, and 20 min up. It is a little steep at the bottom section so wear running shoes.

Even in the off season when this place can be rather stormy, it is still a great place to visit. The beach is a mixture of sand, grit, and pebbles and it certainly not a golden, groomed beach for sunbathers (thank goodness!). If staying at China Beach camp ground, be prepared for a LOT of steps getting down and (more importantly) back u to the beach. 160 steps at the last count. Kinda fun, though. The camp site itself is well-maintained and serviced and reasonably priced. It has space for tents, trailers and larger RVs. There is no cellular phone service available in this area, so be warned. The camp site is not open year-round (closes in Sept and re-pens May long weekend), but French Beach camp ground further towards Sooke is open year-round.

The beach is great for a long walk with the dogs or just hanging out. It can get quite windy, so be prepared.
