Stayed in an excellent bed and breakfast place with very helpful hosts. Very convenient for city centre.

Unfortunately the tacky tourist shops that dominate Government Street only go to disguise its best aspect - the history. Take time to discover this street with a guide and you will discover more than shopping to souvenirs.

When we speak of Government Street we locals usually are referring to the very touristy section that begins across from the Tourist Information building which is also adjacent to the north west point of the Empress Hotel property; all simply a crosswalk away from the Inner Harbour. Government Street is great for purchasing touristy items, mementos of your visit to Victoria, some mementos of Vancouver Island and some that represent Canada as a whole. Great people watching, sometimes buskers - mostly excellent ones, and numerous benches to sit and soak in the ambiance. There are 2 or 3 great pubs within 3 blocks of the Inner Harbour, some outdoor eatery spots; as well as a choice of good lunch spots. Our Canadian signature Department store, The Bay (or initially known as The Hudson Bay store) has entrances on Government Street. The Bay is part of a popular, "well stocked' shopping mall called The Bay Centre. Ice cream outlets available along the way as well!

Victoria is one of the oldest cities in the Pacific Northwest, thus home to many of the old & historic buildings some of them along Government Street. No wonder, some of the old structures here are subject of ghost hunting (that is, if you believe the stories).

Gorgeous views. We were there when there was a festival and it was fun to see all of the vendors and musicians
