Owner description: Completed in 1890, Craigdarroch is a stately home built by the pioneering couple Robert and Joan Dunsmuir, who at the time of its construction were the wealthiest people in British Columbia. Called a 'castle' due to its imposing exterior, the luxurious interior has been restored to look as though the visitor is a guest of Mrs. Dunsmuir during the 1890s. It features beautiful woodwork, unique Victorian artifacts, and an impressive collection of original stained glass, all within a pleasant walk from downtown Victoria.

“We walked to this Castle from the Fairmont”

Quite a distance but worth the walk through the City and up the hill to the Castle. This is well worth the visit and not much of a cost $27-50 I think for the 2 of us. Such a great view from here as well.

“Stuffy and not much to see”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2012

Sorry, but I was disappointed, given the entry fee.. Our youngest granddaughter ( 8 years) enjoyed the "eye spy" activity. Several of the rooms are yet to be restored to an earlier time. Somehow the place has a gloomy history and the rooms, although authentic are not inspiring.

“Beautiful taste of Europe in Victoria”

Gorgeous architecture and worth the price of admission. Lovely home with knowledgeable volunteers on site to talk to. Tours are self-guided, but volunteers are friendly and helpful.

“Good city views for free.”

The grounds are worth checking out alone. Great city views, even at night. Castle is impressive, and worth checking out at least once.

“Very Educational experience!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 March 2012

Amazing history, loved the little gift shop near the exit. The rooms beautifully illustrated the nature of the activities that took place there long ago! Grateful for being allowed to one of the pianos on the 5th floor! (Only actual pianists may be permitted to do so) :)
