Owner description: A busy shopping street that is rumored to be haunted every October between 2:00 - 3:00 am.
Reviewed October 27, 2013

A widely documented and experienced time warp or vortex is supposed to occur on Shelbourne St. A strange phenomenon has been reported over many years along a two-block stretch of Shelbourne Street (between Hillside Avenue and Pearl Street). Motorists, usually late at night when traffic is minimal usually during october between 2 and 3 am, have sometimes discovered everything around them takes on the appearance of rural countryside with farms, fields and gravel roads, instead of a paved road flanked by sidewalks and modern buildings. The vortex ends abruptly beyond the two-block area.

People have heard carriages and horses too.

The street is busy, But everyone seems to manage to drive, walk, bike, shop, crossit, keep it clean and wish for it to be wider. The best area to visit from it is near to Mt Douglas Park and Mountain. It connects you to University Heights shops, Hillside mall and many bus connections to various places in and around Victoria.

I lived on Shelbourne st near king st and while the 100 year old home i lived in was haunted (chairs moving across the kitchen, appliances going on and off, lights flickering, doors opening on their own etc) I never really had any unusual experiences outside of my own home so i would say perhaps due to the age of the buildings and the inevitability of some mortalities during the early 19th century which is to be expected that the area in and of itself is not haunted.

I consider myself a local (transplated from Vancouver) that has lived on almost every part of Shelbourne over the last 25 years. Shelbourne Street is unquie in several places from the hidden Bowker Creek Greenway to Mt Douglas parkway. It is rich with heritage. (Check the link below to see some of the early homes and some awesome history) My favorite part is to drive from Downtown to the top of Mt Douglas to view the enture city. Make sure to make a stop at the widened part past Felthem nearing Mt Doug. If you look to the centre there is a dedication plaque to soldiers. (In 1921, Shelbourne Street was planned as a “memorial avenue,” and American Mountain Ash and London Plane trees were planted along the street north to Mount Douglas.) It was rededicated a few times and is a hidden gem for you to discover.
